Hey I'd be into this I hunted for all the book related posts on kintsugi a while back and I didn't see any other bookclub threads I think
In that case, does anyone have any suggestions for books? I figure if nothing else can mine the ones we didn't read last time, or at least most of them. Was a lot of Discworld, and maybe more variety would be good, I dunno. If I winnowed it down to anything that got 15%+ of the vote we'd have: The Invasion (Animorphs), The Man Who Folded Himself, Ringworld, and The Wee Free Men. That leaves out Mort, Going Postal, and Small Gods, though, which I think are all pretty great? And I imagine sequels to previous bookclub threads might be good, too. Not like the old threads are defunct if anyone wants to talk about those books, and series can be kinda nice? It's been a while, but should still leave the option, I feel like... and yet, there were so many good suggestions made here that didn't make it into the last poll. Don't have the file with the other books suggested here since, but a "quick" glance brings up Nine Princes in Amber (Amber), Vellum, The Riddle of Stars, Deep Secret (The Merlin Conspiracy), Assassin's Apprentice (Realm of the Elderlings), Sabriel (The Old Kingdom/Abhorsen), Inda, Storm Front (Dresden Files), and Good Omens. ...so many good recs. And I'm sure there's more out there to read that came recently, too, or from people who never saw this. I know Goblin Emperor has been on my to-read list for far too long, as has some of NK Jemisin's stuff. The only problem: A built-in poll can only have ten options on it. The forum is the same software as some other forums I go to which have a vote tally program for quests, so I might be able to see if that'd work... but I think it was purpose-coded to those sites, which have different add-ons, and so I can't guarantee anything. Hand-tallying isn't impossible, but it's more spoons than I can reasonably spend if we get as many voters as last time, especially if we stick to the idea of "vote for three books, top three get picked". Anyone have any ideas? If it comes down to it I can just roll a few dice to work out what gets added. EDIT: Counting it out, we have 16 specific book-names in this post alone after discounting the low-voted Discworlds. That's assuming no one comes in with any other ideas before a poll goes up, which, ha! EDIT 2: [X] Running a test.
It works! I am gonna hafta send the creator a thank-you message or something. Should be able to get a voting thread up tonight if people want. Should even be re-usable, I think. Could use this one, but it might be better to keep it in a separate thread still, as it drops the OP's votes (and if I'm tallying I can just add mine to the auto-tally by hand), can kinda clog the thread (as it requires a post for each person's vote), and we can still have this one separate for discussions of the bookclub itself? Or maybe that's all too complicated? While it does require the extra spoons of posting, it comes with the ability to write-in votes! So there's no more "well, the poll already went up, maybe next time?" stuff. And all you have to do to change your vote is either edit the original post or make a new voting post, as it'll only check the most recent applicable post for each user. Relatedly, did the old bookclub rules work for people? Would they be good in the future?
I think a new thread would be better, especially if the voting is made in posts About the rules.. Is it three books per month? I think I'd prefer one just because I read pretty slowly and having to choose which book to focus on or try to read everything seems a bit overwhelming, plus I like the idea of a single common book everyone is reading? But IDK The rest is fine by me from what I've seen
That makes sense, but I think was also part of the reason there were so many, too, to let people who are faster readers keep going, or let people avoid content they weren't as interested in without having to just not participate. Might not still apply as much or be useful, I dunno? The tally program will give totals, too, so could always rank them in order of voting if that'd help with the choosing part? Having the "main" selection be the top pick, with the next two as viable runners-up? ...well, the tally program can handle putting that to a vote as well, actually. Extra voting! Bonus democracy!
Okay. Made a new thread for voting. So much typing. Gonna go lie down for a bit. Sorry for how huge that post wound up being. I hope it actually is easier than if I'd just done a normal poll and culled the options randomly or something.
I'm just gonna nudge this forwards as a future candidate because its great and I've been trying to get people to read it
