I still want to know about the reference to giraffes in Mistborn Era 2. Was there a population of wild giraffes that survived through the entire Final Empire and its massive climate changes and Vin's well-meaning disasters, or did Sazed have a coppermind with an ancient bestiary and did the best he could to reinvent them? I kind of like the latter for the implication that it would mean that Scadrial!giraffes and Yolen!giraffes look exactly the same but have totally different anatomy, and this amuses me.

 

(Speaking of Roshar and logistics, if I ever get the chance to ask him a question, it's going to be, "How does Roshar even have that many gemstones to put in currency? You can't Soulcast to gems, building a mine outside Shin is begging to drown, you can't mine in Shin because religion, and mass gemheart harvesting only started a few years ago. Where did all these gemstones bits come from?")

Like. Give me a biologist from Yolen somehow ending up on Scadrial and being in a constant state of ????? at all this weird ersatz wildlife. It all works, but none of it works how they're used to things that look almost exactly like that working, and they vaguely feel like the entire planet is gaslighting them. :::PPP

 

Elend has the bone that will not quit. "Yo dude she's probably not actually a spy but a thief?" "OH THANK FUCKING GOD SHE JUST WANTS OUR MONEY. MAYBE WE REALLY CAN WORK OUT TOGETHER." "...she's a skaa thief?" "THAT MAKES HER EVEN BETTER, BRO. HOLY SHIT FUCK. I LOVE VALETTE".

For more fun he died while I was listening to j-euro. So just Vin being sad while some Japanese woman shouts GIMME GIMME SHAKE to excited synths that came 20 years too late to the scene. The Mistborn soundtrack is j-eurobeat. Just like how the Kencyrath one is Undertale and ska punk.

 

It's kind of adorable how dumb Elend is, yes. See also the joke I made on my last reread that you can flawlessly identify the Mistborn at a party by making Elend interact with everyone and then asking him who the most harmless people are. If Kelsier posed as a noble and somehow managed not to kill anyone, Elend would walk away thinking of him as Vin's harmless dad who could probably use some protection, because Elend's worried he's going to upset someone important with those jokes and there could be trouble and there's no way he'd be equipped to deal with the sort of assassins that could be sent after him! Later that night Kelsier murders 16 hazekillers.

 

The fact that this boy isn't already dead is something of a miracle, really. You are fucking lucky Vin loves your ass, dude. Also now I want the scene you described above. Because just. He fucking would be like "Oh that dude's in trouble. Oh Valette's harmless dad. I am Elend and I am smart and do the politics".

 

Finished the first book. The twist regarding the Lord Ruler was neat and in a way felt expected. I oddly don't feel much about it other than "well that was neat now let's move on". The one I liked most was Kelsier's true gambit because I like religion a lot. Next up was the 12 metals thing because I like nice even ordered things. One I liked least was the Marsh one because it came out of nowhere at too convenient a moment. Twists aren't my biggest thing but these ones were handled nicely. Though I'm a bit iffy about Marsh's.

The ending was nice though and I'm surprised at how much of a shit I gave about Elend. I'm not hyper attached to anyone yet save maybe Sazed but I do like everyone.

The setting, magic system, and religion are definitely the strong points of the book. Though I do wish more had been done with Luthadel as an individual in its own right.

Will start on the Well of Ascension today probably. Should be fun. Hope I get to learn more about Captain Whines-a-lot and the only man capable of being a bigger whiny bitch than the original supposed Lord Ruler.

 

70 pages into Well of Ascension. Vin and Elend are too het to bear. I am hoping this trend gets interrupted in some fashion. I miss Spook's accent because I am biased and do not care if people find language things hard so long as I enjoy them. OreSeur is a dick and Vin's a dick to him. This dynamic I approve of. As with the first book one of my main draws to reading the chapters isn't what is in those themselves, but with the little bits before the chapter. I'd probably buy just a book that was nothing but the logbooks in full, complete with rambling about fucking supplies.

 

tbh vin/elend is my main gripe of book 2, i like the book a lot overall but that part does get tiresome

granted i liked him a lot more before i realized he was supposed to be a love interest option for vin, but i like him as a character

i am not super observent so i only realized that when i read the annotations

 

I found the moment where Elend finds out about Vin's studying cute. See? That? That's how you do charming small romance moments, Sanderson. Now space things like that out a bit, MAYBE give us a kiss in the book, and we're good. JUST DO THAT. FUCK.

Zane's existence I don't mind yet because I'm not as allergic to love triangles as most are. I do feel that by the end my reaction will either be "Yeah no you ain't working" or "JUST THREESOMES", though. Not super into him yet or super against him. It is pretty apparent to me what he is though. I can sniff out romance in a 1000 mile radius. IT IS. MY TALENT.

Sazed<>Marsh is now my ship by the way.

 

The continued learning about the lore and religion continues to be my favorite bit of the book. That and the magic. Learning more about how feruchemy works and the new metals is fun. These things seem to be Sanderson's strong suit.

 

Half way through book two. Zane is the edgiest shit. He is the fucking Sasuke of our book. Christ.

This said I am growing rapidly frustrated with how mental illness is written in the book. Something is missing. Something vital. It leaves me wanting and frustrated.
