Yeah, it concerned me somewhat. It was just the same Google Chrome pop-up I get when I go to a site that wants to determine if I'm in the food delivery area (I'm almost always on mobile) but I couldn't think of a legit reason for that to happen.
I've never had the forum ask me for my location at all. I have adblocker etc. disabled, the forum has no restrictions on this computer and it's never done that. Have you run a virus scan on your computer recently? Or did chrome just glitch out a bit?
I had written it off as a glitch but yeah I actually had the site request my location on mobile too. And I was using the Brave browser with all the shields up at the time. And when I check the certificate, it does say it did that:
if you don't mind me asking: What browser is that? (if i could get a link that would be helpful) what operating system is your phone, and what version is it? I'm interested in knowing because i'd like to try and reproduce it, assuming you're on android.
Fwiw I'm using the default Chrome browser on Android 8.0.0 and here's my permissions screenshot Spoiler So it's not like it was a phishing attempt or something. I might reset my permissions for this site and see if it happens again.
I cleared my settings for the site and I haven't gotten a location request yet, but I'll be sure to update if it does. For now I'm using Brave (https://brave.com) on Android vers. 6.0.1 and that's what I was using when it requested my location.
It was the home page for me, actually! I've reset permissions and it hasn't happened again yet, but I'll report if it does.
Just got it again on the homepage. Navigated there via the new posts page, so it's not like I was coming from a website that /did/ request location. Spoiler: large eta: spoilered the image. i didnt realize how big it was sorry!
okay, couple of questions: what network provider are people using when they see this? asked some security peeps, and at least TWC and Comcast are known to try to inject tracking stuff sometimes into other feeds, apparently. also, does this happen on any other sites?
I was on my mobile data at the time, so that would be... Ting Mobile. The last time I was on my home wifi, which is provided by a local ISP called Peak Internet. I have not noticed it on any other sites that shouldn't be requesting my location.
I'm on WOW Internet, definitely not TWC or Comcast. I haven't had it happen on any other sites except, like, food delivery ones or store locator pages - ones that have legit reasons to ask.
Do you have any mods installed that might have scripts running that are hosted on sites that may be requesting the location? That's the only other thing I can think of in lieu of an external image...
I can't think of any. There's a couple of mods but they're all completely local. And so far as I can tell, it's only hitting a couple of people; no one else seems to see it ever.
yes, i'm seeing posts showing up out of order, sometimes, mostly involving postmod, and i have no idea why. it's new behavior, and i think it may be caused by doing the rebuilds while the site is still up and running, so i may take things offline for a bit to try to patch that up.
I've noticed the post-mod problem come up before when we have a huge backlog of them or've let them sit for several hours in a mid to high traffic thread. We just had a double digit deluge of them that no one was online all night to sort out and I'm guessing noticing them at present is related to those being shaken all over the place.
