Also in the backstory I've got for Poppy, Nico and Poppy are actually friends, which started because Poppy's older full-sister Rose went missing 3 years ago with signs of a struggle and her sword, Rosethorn, stuck in a tree, and Poppy went to Nico to see if he could tell if Rose was dead, and boy howdy does Nico understand missing sister issues.

...I remember really liking the writing-magic system in the Kane Chronicles but it's been a while since I read them, please someone prevent me from rereading them all and making an egyptian-magic-having kid who is around the halfblood camps because of shenanigans.

she ran away to camp, was like "LOL NOPE NOT GOING HOME" and was frustrated to find out that a) godmom is even worse and b) camp is run shittily. But still better than home.
Her sister calls her often, they get along. (said sis lives on her own, having noped out once she could)

did they? all I remember is the Egyptian gods not telling the Egyptian magician kids exactly who ruled over New York, for unmentioned reasons.

 

also Adara's story is like....emotionally abusive and alcoholic mom who blamed her for ruining her life because when Adara was born, her mom had to quit college to now single-handedly take care of this kid who her absentee father had left her with, her mom not realizing who Adara's dad actually was. Adara started drawing monsters in as young as nine, and realizing that it was her drawing them in and that her mom wasn't about to do jack shit to help her, she skipped town and made her way to camp, through means I haven't quite figured out yet, because no one finds her prior to her showing up at camp, so it's probably through sheer luck she manages to survive long enough to get there, or even find it to begin with.

considering i was intentionally designing her as someone I thought was hot, this pleases me :D

 

As memory serves, in the first book, one of the kids asked their magic uncle why he didn't live in Manhattan (or something about that), said uncle then replies that Manhattan has other gods and other problems (complete with, in the graphic novel, a picture of a lightning bolt near the Empire State Building, according to the wiki.) But apparently there's a side story where Percy and Carter meet and fight a giant crocodile monster, and another one where Sadie and Annabeth meeet, though I don't really know what happens in those.

I read the one where Percy and Carter meet and Carter gives Percy a hieroglyphic on his palm, that will activate and alert Carter if Percy says Carter's name.

Anyway, Poppy and Rose's dad is Carlos Ortega, a famous architect who works with green buildings with plants incorperated in the infrastructure. Ceres actually stayed faithful to him, for 6-8 years, which is pretty damn long for a god! But she left shortly after Poppy was born, so Rose got to see Ceres a lot more often as a kid than Poppy did.

Carlos is a good dad and did his best to both prepare his daughters for things they were going to find out when they were like 11, and to support them as they were as children. After Rose went to camp she kept in touch and visited frequently, but the visits fell off a little bit before Poppy went to camp, and when she finally made it into a camp at 11 years old she got told Rose was missing.

So that's a thing!

Poppy is very loyal to camp jupiter but also prefers to stay in the background. No grand quests for her, thanks!

 

Oh, also, Poppy lost her arm and got her right side all scarred up and semi-mangled in the battle at the end of the Heroes of Olympus series, which was her first serious battle fighting alongside the whole camp. Before that, she'd only been sent out on short (but important) quests with her cohort, and not even the whole cohort at that. She's in the second cohort, and got grandfathered into that because Rose was in there. This... doesn't actually help her feel better about Rose.

She uses Rose's imperial gold sword, Rosethorn, which was a gift from Ceres.

 

PS. Rose is not dead but I haven't decided yet what happened to her or if Ceres knows and is just not telling Poppy for Good Reasons.
