I was thinking about making an Over the Garden Wall thread, since it hasn't been made already, and it's getting close to Halloween and it certainly is a spooky miniseries (aaaand I've been listening to the OST lately but that has nothing to do with it I swear! Ok maybe a little bit...) Considering it's sorta like Divine Comedy: For Kids! the same way The Lion King was basically Hamlet: Talking animals edition I am almost 110% certain that the villain song is about suicide
Dude, do the the thing. Over The Garden Wall is amazing, creepy, creepymazing, etc, etc. And yeah, that's probably about suicide.
holy shit, kris straub made that? that's awesome, i never would have expected something that eerie outta the guy who writes gag comics about a cop who enrolled in police school twice so he's technically two cops.
@Deresto I KNOW RIGHT I loved Starslip. fuckin' devoured it. cried over it. then I completely lost interest while he was doing Chainsawsuit stuff, just not my cup of tea. but then I watched that clip, and was like what the fuck and proceeded to discover Broodhollow and read the whole damn thing in two hours.
I'm just gonna leave this here: SOMA Files. Also I am about an hour into the game itself (just got to the communications room) and it is scary as hell on multiple levels. There's the nice surface layer of jump scares, and then there's some deep existential horror shit bound to go down going by the stuff on the Files page. Good shit, man.
Oh man, I'm on such a horror kick tonight. I'd never heard of the Gideon Keys, and they are my absolute entire jam. I'm gonna share some of my absolute favorites that are very much in the same vein: The Holders: In any city, in any country, there's a mental institution or halfway house you can try any of these in. There were 2538 of these Objects, but 2000 were lost. The remaining 538 must never come together. Ever. A guide for how to undertake the horrific trials required to take an Object from its Holder, and the terrible consequences that befall any who seek them. Most of these follow the same formula, but there are a lot of truly chilling and memorable ones. Together, they build a really interesting setting. The site also has some longer stories set in the Holder universe, including one villain that I've never forgotten, Jack Empty. "They say if you ripped off his skin you'd find nothing underneath, 'cause he's got jack inside him. He's empty. Get it?" The SCP Foundation I don't know if there's any creepypasta fan that hasn't heard of the Foundation. A secret government organization whose mission is to Secure, Contain, and Protect weird things. Its catalogue is presented as a series of Special Containment Procedures, detailing the measures taken to contain the weird things, the research into their nature, etc. It's become this huge Foundationverse thing with its own mythology, spin-off sites, long-form fiction, video games, and more! The Foundation has many enemies and few friends, and organizations like the Fifthist Church, The Church of the Broken God, and the art-terrorist collective Are We Cool Yet? are some of my absolute favorite things. I also have a soft spot for the Global Occult Coalition, and an OC strike team hiding in my head that pops up every time I dig back into it. Invisible Games An old collection of video game creepery by Catherynne M Valente. Lots of seriously interesting concepts, hints at a larger setting, and a general vibe of 'Holy shit this could be real'. Includes the story of Killswitch, a game that can only ever be played once. The Memetic Symbol Every time I go on a creepypasta bender, I inevitably come back to this story. Just read it. It's incredible.
"I don't feel like checking those links now, maybe later, when it's dark out and everyone's sleeping?" what the fuck, brain, whyyyyy
This nosleep story is quite good: https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/3qmlou/be_careful_whose_messes_you_clean_up/ I like that the author doesn't spell out what happened.
Sad I couldn't devote this halloween season to more spooky for this thread, gratified y'all are coming through with your own links. JOLLY GOOD SHOW, CREEPFRIENDS
Additionally, I do have ONE link for those of you into horror manga and asian horror in general. It's the best tumblr I've ever followed: http://spiraphobia.tumblr.com/
Getting back into nightvale has had the side effect of me looking for other entertaining podcasts. In my search i have found a zombie story podcast called We're Alive, and so far it has been wonderful. it's like a radio version of the walking dead. the characters are really well written too, imo. you don't usually get a meaningful story from the soldiers' point of view in zombie stuff, they're mostly used as a plot device. I wasn't sure if this had been recced before or not so here it is.
so i was going through my routine webcomic check today, and found out kris straub sold the rights to candle cove to syfy channel. the story is going to be the first episode of a series called channel zero next halloween as part of their annual '31 days of halloween'. hopefully they don't fuck it up, which seems to be about a 50/50 chance with that network.
It's a...well, I hesitate to call it an anime. It's a series of rotoscoped shorts called Kowabon that came out in Japan this year. You can see the subbed, short episodes here!
