So I just finished reading the novel GOTH by Otsuichi. If anyone is interested in it, the manga is available not necessarily legally online. There's also a really great movie based off it - it's in Japanese, but you can find it subtitled online. It's the story of two classmates, both of whom show sociopathic tendencies. They investigate heinous crimes committed around them with no intention of trying to punish the perpetrators - they're simply fascinated by the crimes and by the nature of the criminals. The writing is extremely straightforward (in terms of tone - there are definitely plot twists, believe me) and easily accessible. This has got to be one of my favorite novels ever. Does anyone have an recommendations for what to read next? I like disturbing things and unconventional narratives, but a lot of the stuff I see that I think might interest me seems to fall into the '3 edgy 5 me' category to where the author is just pushing the envelope to push the envelope and it isn't actually engaging or, frankly, very good. I really love the straighforward writing style I mentioned in GOTH, so something like that would be great. Also, I'm really really burned out on the YA 'girl with magic/supernatural powers' or it's cousin, 'girl without magic/supernatural powers' horror. It can definitely be done correctly, and I'm sure some stories like that are really good, but it's not what I'm looking for right now. I can add it to the 'read this later' suggestion pile but otherwise I'd like something different than that.
I just watched a movie with my husband called "They Look Like People" and really liked it. It's a psychological thriller and it feels pretty indie film to me at times, so it's a slow build and some extraneous pauses that don't need to be as long, and the ending is sort of a let down in how abrupt it is. But if you like that feeling of "is this all in the guy's head or is this real," you should check it out.
SIGH. Really want some good horror! There's something about being sick and braindead that just makes me crave some pants shitting terror. But I've seen or read everything good, it seems.
So...don't know if this counts as horror, exactly, but it's so eerie and uncomfortable I feel I have to share it here. This channel is by far one of the freakiest things I've ever seen, in part due to the fact that I am not entirely sure that there's any way to really fake it on this kind of scale. There's no answers for it- going to the website linked in the about just leads to the same thing, just in blog format. There's a Vice interview with the guy, which includes the part of his video where someone breaks into his house and he doesn't stop smiling. i dunno this creeps me out a lot more than some of the stuff ive known for sure has been fake in this thread like marble hornets or this house has people in it
That... is so weird. It seems like performance art from what he says in the interview, but the sheer dedication! And the house being broken in to thing is seriously creepy. I don't think I could have just sat there.
Playing through SOMA now and I have to say I am very pleased with it so far. Like really pleased. It's like Frictional mixed Alien with 2001 with Lovecraft with The Abyss into one really weird package. IT IS LOVELY AND VERY MUCH HORROR. It just also happens to be super sci-fi. Which honestly isn't new for horror, as we see with the aforementioned Alien. Anyway currently made it to Omicron and I have spent the last year avoiding spoilers for the game. Very successfully. And boy I am happy I did because this is just a delight to play through myself. God damn Frictional. You beautiful bastards. I also don't mind the lack of an inventory because I've got my puzzles and they are actually fun. There are some just spin all the twisty bit puzzles like Amnesia had, but it's more The Dark Descent or the Penumbra series balance with the puzzles. Which is nice. Because my one big issue with A Machine for Pigs was the lack of proper puzzles. I am also happy there seem to be fewer shitty physics puzzles. I love your physics Frictional because they suck, but because they are jank I hate having to stack boxes and climb on them. I will say I miss the lack of a journal though. I'd like to be able to just take all the files I am finding with me and have the flashbacks recorded somewhere. I can binge a wiki's transcriptions though. Hopefully.
I just got done marathon watching The West Records. I honestly don't understand how it hasn't gotten more attention, it's really good and apparently still updating! Check it out if you're into found footage mystery creepiness.
Has anyone got a full collection of the Ju-On (Grudge movies) with english subtitles? I've watched the western releases of 'Ju-On; The Grudge' (which is frankly my favourite horror movie of all time) and the Grudge 2, but I'm aware that there's like half a dozen more pieces to the story that only ever saw the light of day in Japan and that makes me sad. I found the actual second film as a torrent, but I could only find it with german subtitles which I don't speak nearly well enough to properly follow D: If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go here! (Oh, also, I have White Ghost/Black Ghost on DVD - I think I watched White, but couldn't stomach (heh) Black because I have massive triggery issues with some of the content.) Any leads or help in this quest would be super appreciated!
After I watched the first Ju-On in theatres and loved it to bits my husband bought me all the Japanese films that were available. Unfortunately they're in storage or I'd stream them sometime... I'd say keep trying to find a torrent, they're bound to be out there somewhere.
@PotteryWalrus Found some links to watch online! The Curse The Curse 2 The Grudge The Grudge 2 The Grudge: Girl in Black * The Grudge: Old Lady in White * The Grudge: Beginning of the End The Grudge: The Final Curse * Included for anyone else who wants to watch the movies in order, since I know you already have them Grudge no longer looks like a word to me now.
I'm still working my way through SOMA. It is such a good game, it may be one of the best horror games I've ever played, and I cannot stand to play it for more than an hour at a time, tops, because it picks up a ten pound sledgehammer and just fuckin wails on so many of my NOPE buttons. Sometimes multiple NOPE buttons at once! Spoiler: NOPE buttons, some kinda spoilery: Claustrophobia: check! End-of-the-world shit: check! Human-shaped things that might not be human: check Reanimated corpses with electronic bits stuffed into them: check! Existential dread: fucking check Being chased by things you can't fight: check Possibly being the last more or less sane human consciousness on Earth: check Sinister slime/goop/etc: check. Structure gel is freaky shit. Especially when people start DRINKING IT. But it also hits a pretty big YEAH button... Spoiler: what are little Simons made of? It's a subtle one, but I sure noticed it. When Simon finds out that his brainmeat backup has been installed in hardware that is half diving suit and various bits of electronics and half Imogen Reed's Dead Body, he freaks out a little about being in a dead body. He doesn't say anything about his (presumably, it's never stated otherwise?) male consciousness being installed into a female body. Doesn't even mention that part. It's a little thing, and the creators probably didn't even mean anything by it, but as someone who is kind of in the same ManOS-installed-on-female-hardware boat (minus the structure gel and electronic bits, of course) it really stuck out to me that Simon wasn't all "EWW I'M IN A GIRL THIS IS WRONG WAIT DO I HAVE BOOBS" about it.
man, that game looks really neat, I might try to overcome my total lack of skill at difficult games to play it.
Do check it out, it's actually pretty forgiving as horror games with unfightable monsters go. I've only died died once, which is kind of a miracle because I'm shit at stealth mission stuff. There is also a "Wuss Mode" mod (that's exactly what it's called) that renders the monsters harmless. Apparently there are still some events where they will chase you, but they won't kill you.
SAJFLDJLAKLK; THANKYOU I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING TODAY (I was just wading through IMDb's list of Horror Movies from 2015, I'm THAT desperate. I'm still very amused that the subjects range right from 'ZOMBIES! SERIAL KILLERS! Haunted houses!' to 'Cursed Piece of Plywood! Alien marijuana! THIS BEACH WILL LITERALLY EAT YOUR FACE'. Western Horror tropes - I have a lot of issues with you guys, but sometimes, you do make me laugh.)
@ whoever linked Night Mind in here thank you! I've been binging his Explained series. It perfectly solves the problem where I'm interested in series like Marble Hornets but my ADHD makes it hard to follow the story
