    >:I does anyone else do concept sketches that like.. overlap like hell on the page in a sketchbook? like everything's running into each other but you can tell what's what and it looks satisfyingly cluttered, but then you flip the page and draw something small and really fucked up and abandon page to something fresh for another panel of essentially sneezing onto the page? (I'm trying to describe a concept with another concept + similar feeling and idk if it's getting the point across xD )

Pffhaha yes, every notebook* of mine looks like that! Some pages are an absolute chaotic mess and some have one or two sketches on them and that's it.

*for some reason I have a mental block where I CAN'T draw whatever I want in sketchbooks. I just can't. So my artistic stream of consciousness ends up in a super top secret notebook, while my fancy sketchbook lies empty :<

i am actually really bad at doing this, i've been pushing myself to get more STUFF onto a page bc i end up with whole pages that have got basically nothing on them because i started drawing too small.

My next comic is gonna look like this:

Each page will just be a ghost on a black background saying something spooky or something, I don't know. The point is: I've tried "anatomy" and "backgrounds" and they're just really not my thing.

I'm kidding it's been very helpful to have to constantly draw things I've never drawn before and don't want to draw now.

asdhfjaks i'm stuggling with this page, idk if it's because it's too many panels, or if i'm just bad at pacing or what.

    PAGE 7
Panel 1: The next day. It's a high summer. Perfect day for skimming stones. A bird lands on the bus stop as Kay waves to Tamara, who is waiting on the bench with a fresh bag of rocks.

Panel 2: Kay's satchel leans against Tamara's rucksack. Both their shoes and socks sit on the rocks behind them.

Panel 3: Kay looks pretty out of her work clothes and with her hair down, she’s in the water up to her knees and laughing with the sun behind her.

Panel 4: Tamara skims rocks beautifully and expertly, she looks strong and focused. Out of her line of sight Kay chews on her thumbnail.

Panel 5: A ripple across the water, Kay’s feet are in frame, it’s clearly not far from where they’re standing.
    SFX: PLOP!
    KAY: Awwh.

Panel 6: Tamara is still smiling when she puts her hand sympathetically on the small of Kay’s back. Kay blushes.

    blargh.

@Sol Hmm, it does seem like kind of a lot to fit in one page. This is just me (and I have a preference for putting as few panels in a page as possible - I think the most I've ever done was seven or eight, and I usually try to stay in the three-to-five range, so take this how you will) but I would expect panels 1, 3 and 4 to take up a quarter to half a page each because they seem like scene-setting panels. Also, the scene seems fairly relaxed, and I find that larger/fewer panels convey a slower, calmer pace than lots of small panels. If I were drawing it I think I would put panels 1 - 3 on one page and the rest on the next page.

I haven't seen a link to your comic, do you have it online?

ah no i don't it's a one shot so i'm going to post the whole thing up at the same time. these are the last two pages though so it should be done soon!

and yeah i was originally going for a montage type thing, but i think spreading it out would set the calm mood better. hmmm.

Montages can be good for setting a slow pace, too, but I can't give any advice about them because I don't have much experience with drawing them - they're kind of hard to do well, so I've been avoiding them, haha. The way you've split the panels up in take 2 looks like an effective way to slow the pace, though.

Good luck, I'm looking forward to seeing the completed comic! ^^

    @mrozna Aren't we all?

    I got it done though!

Er, done enough. I have to add some details to the road and sidewalk, and I should probably add some people walking around and maybe more stuff on the roof, but I can do that after I get it back from @Key.

Parallel lines are going to be the death of me. BUT! I used Sketchup for the outline of the building, and it was so much easier than trying to figure it out myself. I mean, last time I did something like this it took me days, and this time it only took me <hour messing around in Sketchup plus five or so hours adding all the details in MS. I'm going to see if I can create a more detailed model, maybe one of the whole location, because I would love to do more backgrounds.

SO. I totally missed 24 hour comic day because I am derp and heard about it way too late in the day again. It got me wondering, though: would anyone else who arrived too late/was too busy to take part today.. want to do something similar here on Kintsugi sometime? :O Not everyone's able to do the same crunching, but making a damn good effort in a 24 hour period would be really neat to see what everyone could do.

I would love to do that sometime. I've never managed to finish one when I give that a try but I still like trying haha.

Also...does anyone have good advice to paneling without a scanner? I used to draw them out and scan them in then line and color and it was so much easier but I don't have that option and it feels really awkward making them in Sai.

@TheMockingCrows That sounds like it could be fun! I don't know if I'd be up to twenty-four actual pages, but I could try. Maybe if we changed it from twenty-four pages to a complete one-shot comic, or something?

@rje Hmm, I don't know, I do all my paneling in Manga Studio (which has tools specifically for that purpose). What's awkward about it? Would it be easier/less awkward if you could do the panels in a program that had, like, rectangle tools and things?
