After I've talked with @Key about what we want to cover in the chapter, I start off writing a really rough draft. It outlines each scene, estimates how many pages I'll need for it, and includes notes on setting/characters that will influence how I draw it later. No actual dialogue (unless I think of a particular line that I really like). It looks like this:

After that's finished and I've made sure that I have all of the essentials down, I open a new document and start expanding. The second script includes dialogue as well as much more detailed descriptions of characters' actions, expressions, body language, emotions, etc., and sometimes directions for how to frame things (pan here, pull back to reveal x). Like so:

Key looks it over to make sure I didn't forget anything or make any mistakes, and I tend to tweak the dialogue a lot and occasionally add in small details or entire scenes once I get down to thumbnailing, but that's essentially the final script.

I don't usually script, because having all the details down and settled makes actually drawing the comic boring for me and I'd rather come up with things as I go than risk becoming bored of my project. I only write a rough timeline so I don't fuck up the plot too much. Everything else is a surprise :P
That, and I think more in images and scenes than words, so if I actually NEED to script a scene I just sketch a series of thumbnails.
(I have tried regular scripting. It doesn't work for me, but I have enormous respect for those who write detailed scripts. Shit's impressive!)

@mrozna I tend to be impressed by people who think visually, since I'm not a visual thinker at all. I usually have to consciously generate images in my head if I want them, and often I don't even visualise what a finished piece will look like when drawing. I just have the idea of the character's thoughts, emotions, and actions, and somehow that manages to translate into an image once I put pencil to paper (or stylus to tablet). I experience what I'm trying to draw as a feeling or a concept, I think.

Now I'm curious about how many artists are visual thinkers and how many aren't. It seems like there would be more visual thinkers, right?

I think pretty visually - even when I'm thinking in words, I see the words. But I'd still rather have a script, because it allows for a set pacing rather than me trying to do it all at once, and it gives me what dialogue I have to fit in.

Once I start the actual comic, you'll see what I mean, because there's a fair amount of thought shown visually and I'm doing it close to how my thought works.

Edit: I misread something; I don't need an overly detailed script, I just need to know where the characters are in space and what they're saying, when.

Ever get those moments when you're working on a planning page and you just care so much about the dorks on it that your heart hurts a bit?? Hooray for platonic friendship between nerds.

I WANT.. TO SEE.. YOUR COMICS MAIN CHARACTERS. Maybe with a basic description of them and their place in your world?

I WANT TO START LOVING ALL OF YOUR CHILDREN INDIVIDUALLY, EVEN IF THEY'RE NOT IN PUBLIC YET.

Any recommendations on how to make my anxiety brain stfu while I'm working? Any time I lift my nose off the grindstone I just wind up getting spooked by witch hunts in the distance and find myself panicking, calming down, then repeating and it's getting very distracting.

@TheMockingCrows you could try listening to music while you work. I sometimes even put on a movie or tv show so I can just listen to the dialogue, and watch the movement when I need a break. I know Luka likes to work while listening to audiobooks - basically, if you can, let something else occupy your mind.

@Bel Capricorn I usually do that but I'll try changing sources. That might help things out!

eta: whoops, remembering my meds helps too.

Trying very hard to finish the next page, but I'm frustrated because the face of one of the characters doesn't want to turn out as I want it to >:V Also I'm seriously behind BECAUSE A CERTAIN RPG GAME HAS CONSUMED MY SOUL FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS. Fuck you, Undertale, for making me cry about goats.
Good news is, I got like 65% of the page inked yesterday, so it shouldn't take me too long to finish it, at least if I stop being distracted.

Aiming to invade Taptastic next month! SO HYPE. .. Also so anxious, but HYPE IS OVERRIDING THAT. No time to be anxious about not being good enough, fuck being good enough, there's stories to tell and shit to learn that I'll only be able to learn once I get my feet wet.

That's an excellent attitude to have. I mean, it worked out pretty well for me, anyway. I decided to post a six-page short that I was working on to get a feel for Manga Studio, and it turned into 111 pages and taught me a lot about how I work in the process. I don't know if the project I was practicing for would ever have actually gotten off the ground without that experience of just plunging in and then going ahead because I'd already started.

Do you have a Tapastic account yet? Mine's here!

    I do, but I've not touched it yet so it's literal bare bones for the time being. ;7;
