Creative Gripes Thread

Got that picture that just won't work with you? Stuck on a scene where the characters won't move on and do the important stuff alright? Still in the outlining section and dying because you have no idea what to do with this? Just stuck, in general, with a creative block that won't lift? Come complain about it!

The only ground rule I'm slapping on this thread is that since it is a whine thread, to some degree, advice is wonderful but pure venting is more than okay too. Sometimes you just want to yell about how garbage your sketches are without help (and sometimes you really really need the help) so ideally, this thread should function as both.

(Also, like, feel free to whine about every other creative venture here too--cosplay props aren't working out, or that really neat sculpture idea you had that's not playing nice, or the thread is ATTACKING YOU... it's all good for here!)

I've been having a constant tradeoff between ideas-but-no-time and time-but-no-motivation for both art and writing for months :/ Every so often I can brute-force something through, and sometimes I feel the momentum starting to pick up again, but either real life gets out of control or I just get exhausted and everything slips away from me again.

And additional gripe of that I love writing in second person, and I know it can be a turnoff outside of homestuck, and it's taken time to kinda sorta establish myself in transformers, but now I'm looking at dipping my toes into a new fandom, and... disheartening. I know it hurts my views and have decided to stick with it anyways, and I try to adjust for the way that lack of response saps my motivation, but still. Disheartening.

Me: has a million general plot ideas
Also me: starts trying to write
also me: how does this work again?

I thought it'd be easier for me to write mistfisher when i had outlined what i wanted in each episode, but suddenly i can't even write a single scene because apparently i need to do all of it in chronological order so i know what i can already reference and what to foreshadow and AUGH
here i stand and want to be an author but my words per day output is nonexistent because i've forgotten how humans work. (honestly i never knew, but how do you even write people who are not you? the closest i've managed are VMs and rn those are laggy as shit)
and i outline a character to someone else and they can just pick up on that and extrapolate on that and i... i can't. doesn't work, skill not unlocked, not enough mana, script crit errors out, instructions unclear dick caught in ceiling fan and i dont even have either of those.

and i picked up linearting because colour is a lie, and my brain went "you know, that half of the paper you haven't shaded yet? that needs dot shading. nothing else will work. wtf brain, dot shading takes a million years ==_==

oh, or that time i accidentally linearted the background i painstakingly constructed over the past 3 hours because perspective and i suck at backgrounds, but that background is covered by clothing. ffff. i tried doing that thing digitally but DAMN i think i need an art program with a triangle ruler/geometry set square/geodreieck plugin, because this is getting ridiculous.
or start learning google sketchup or blender while im at it. backgrounds are a lie, and so are clothing folds.

i'll be constantly amazed by people who can draw in simplified ways and still have it look good.

colour continues being confusing. and that's after the ridiculous amount of xp i got from looking at purplekecleon's colouring tutorial.

I think in complete sentences, so it's SO COMPLETELY FRUSTRATING when I write out this entire scene in my head and then try to put it on paper and just... blank.

Also, I tell myself that I will remember the plot ideas I came up with when I couldn't write them down, but do I? nooooo. of course I don't.

when you're sketching and the character Does The Thing it's fine, you can kinda work around it.
when you're inking and they suddenly refuse to be worked with and fuck the pen up ten ways from sunday any time you try to catch their shapes and edges, then it's personal

I have hit the point of fuckit where it’s tempting to post what I’ve got and to hell with all the rest hut. But there’s a whole THING I’m setting UP so I can’t just do that.

I know I'm posting a lot here, but every time I attempt to go back to work I am struck by another arrrghbleh. This time it's: why can I never focus on one thing long enough to make substantial progress on it?! I have so many ideas and nothing is happening with them because I cannot focus. I have thirty-nine fanfic wips and a good dozen original works I haven't finished yet, and I keep stalling out and starting new stuff rather than working on any of them. Why.

That feel when you know what has to happen next and it seems to be in sentence form in your head and then you look at the document and you just can't write words.

I am much better at crocheting than knitting. As I am reminded as I try to knit this thing. It's going so slowly. >_<

Me: I'm going to write something with kinks and whatnot!

Me, inevitably, when I reach the point where that becomes relevant: Whelp, time to skip ahead to more plot and shit.

Perspective + traditional buddhist temple construction = a fucking nightmare to draw, even with a big geometry set square. I think I need more colours so I can keep track of which lines belong to what...
