A concept: have a mod make the thread about five pages out and have some sort of poll on a few options as what to snidely name it.

 

Seriously though, if a mod is the one who actually makes the thread, it cuts down on a lot of the double or multiple threads made by mistake, and we can also get a vote on the name. It can be locked and / or pinned until the old thread fills out the 999 pages and then the old one is locked and this one is unlocked.
