Shit, there's another liveblog in town, I better get back on this. Okay now what in the fresh hell is going on here. We've got the same noises as that place where I got that wrong call, we have water above me now somehow, and this river with no readily apparent source, and a cliff on the other side of whatever I'm walking on that the river hasn't spilled over. Also, different rocks. Those definitely look folded to me, which suggests that what I was looking at before was metamorphic foliation. So to sum up. We have a cave in a mountain View attachment 5491 With a large, deep hole down to a series of ruins, presumably modified from existing caverns. View attachment 5492 Below these ruins is a much larger cavern or caverns, containing a city View attachment 5638 and an odd approximately linear series of stepped/terraced cliffs View attachment 5986 Far above the floor of an absolutely massive forested cavern. View attachment 6085 These cliffs contain their own internal caves, odd gaps (possibly extensional jointing?) View attachment 5974 including some that are quite large View attachment 6086 and at least two underground rivers, neither with a source that I have found, View attachment 5835 View attachment 6123 and at least one of which is definitely flowing along the top of this line of cliffs, not spilling down to the cavern floor below. View attachment 6124 (this image probably less than 200m from the previous) furthermore, the cliffs seem to drop off along both sides, so I don't think I'm just skirting the rim of this massive cavern, it looks like there's a bizarre raised line of cliffs down the middle of it. View attachment 6078 Lithology seems to be mostly medium-to-high grade metamorphism, possibly gneiss, which suggests that all this rock was exhumed from deeper in the crust. This blue rock might be a glaucophane schist or something like that, although those usually aren't quite this strikingly blue. Could also be a bunch of secondarily precipitated azurite, I guess? That seems pretty unlikely, though. I suppose the mountain could be a metamorphic core complex? That would exhume a bunch of metamorphic rocks, get some mountains by isostatic rebound and horst and graben shit, and give the extension to make joints in the cliffs, but doesn't explain the formation of this massive cavern, especially because the rivers I've seen aren't in the right positions to have carved it. I suppose they could have moved beds, though, and joints and normal faulting would give planes of weakness for water to run down and start an erosional cave. I dunno if i've ever heard of those making big open caverns like this, though. Will have to investigate further.
