johnathan dubsky: a lot of josh's backstory and history, for me, had to come after i really did my research into autism, into aspergers, watching videos, reading books, talking to people, especially [game dev]'s son who has aspergers. for me, josh really gets connect with the dedsec crew, and i played josh as in love with sitara, he really saw her as someone he could be connected to-- and it could be maternal love, but that chemistry within the group, with all the members, was important

[someone animated that link i posted earlier-- it took her five months, and she showed it to the crew and shawn lost his fucking mind because he loves it so much-- he was convinced that it was going to get into the game and was heartbroken when it wasn't and now he's just losing it]

[one of the people got to do a question, and asked for a hug, and shawn DMed her one-- and she thanked johnathan for his portrayal of autism. she was able to show them a comic too and they all cracked up over it.]

q: do you prefer dogs or cats?

q: about some of the cut voicelines for wd2, with characters like wrench/sitara/jordi, were these going to be used for dlc or were they meant for freeroaming? some of them play like you should've been able to play as the character

shawn: you know what? i haven't got a goddamn clue. i don't think there was ever plans to have them as main characters like marcus, though there were plans to have wrench parkour that i couldn't do because of my injury-- it's possible they switched the focus after recording those lines

johnathan: josh was supposed to be playable, we recorded the stuff for it, but it got cut-- i can't remember why, if they ever told me, but he was going to be playable

shawn: i think it was cut for time, and josh was one of the ones that got cut

mod: yeah, sitara's rooftop mission, people have figured out how to get her down and freeroam and there's information in for it

shawn: OH SHIT REALLY????

mod: yeah, there were modeling issues, like if she went to get a drink the glass would float into her head

shawn: she'd do it for us all the time

[shawn asked if people could say where they came from, and johnathan saw that someone was from the czech republic and went 'oh my mom's from there!'. someone who's username is bacon is getting set up to ask a question and it becomes wall to wall bacon jokes. tech problems persisteth.]

q: what was your favorite moment, in the story, for your character? [shawn takes a second to go I LOVE U because she's been active on twitter with him]

shawn: i think for me it's the moment when wrench gets his mask back-- we get to see him vulnerable and open, with marcus, and that's one of my favorite scenes. actually, thinking about it, my second favorite is the marcus/tbone/wrench conversation around wrench jr and cutting people's hands off-- that was a hard scene but we had an amazing director

ruffin: i really liked when yall did shrooms? did we shoot that early on? the beginning, we shot early on, and i enjoyed doing that because we got to really see how the characters interacted and bounced off each other, see their relationships and how they worked together. my other scene was where horatio died, that was very emotional but i loved having the chance to do some deep work

shawn: yeah that's a rough scene

johnathan: yeah, that was some incredible work. for me, i dunno, the scenes became more fun-- you're constantly learning who your character is as time goes on, the further we got, the more interesting i found josh. the more interesting scene were the heavier ones, getting ot explore what anger feels like for josh, and what it meant for him to have the support of the others in the midst of a crisis. for josh, the ability to completely lose control is something that deeply affects him, it's terrifying for him. i also really enjoyed a lot of the scenes where i'm not doing anything in them

shawn: please tell them about the campfire and the can

johnathan: OKAY SO in the beginning of the game, on the beach, and in one of the takes, we have these things that we use to track where these are in the game, and these things are like a pound? and i got to hand one to wrench and just toss it right at his jewels. right into the crotch. that was the best performance i'd ever seen from him.

shawn: "and that's why wrench has a limp" EXACTLY. i don't think it made it into the game though

q: what was it like doing motion capture? i've seen it, and it looks weird.

shawn: it depends on the scene! on average we do two or three takes, more if it's really complicated. it's hard, because it's this whole new medium, not film, not theater, but i love it. it feels more natural than camera or stage, and you can really do anything because you don't have to worry about hitting your mark or turning to the audience, because there's not one camera you have to worry about. i'm a huge fan of it and the tech is constantly evolving so it's getting even easier now

ruffin: this was my first mocap experience, and it feels like a perfect blend of theater and television, because you get to have that imagination of theater without the pressure of the direct audience, and you have a director right there. i could talk to any of the veterans, like shawn, and it was a really good experience.

shawn: my favorite was a DLC scene where we meet up on the rooftop and wrench goes "what's up, marky mark?" because that was all improv, and we didn't think it was going to be in the game, but it was! and the other ones were in the background a lot, where wrench was constantly in his space and poking him and everything. and the thing is, wrench has a different way of pushing everyone's buttons, the homoeroticism with marcus, just butting heads with tbone... but you notice he doesn't really do it with sitara. he's afraid of pushing her buttons.

ruffin: that scene, with josh, in the portapotty?

johnathan: oh my god, that was my first scene ever for the game

ruffin: yeah, it was great. and any time i got to geek out with shawn over jimmy siska was great, we were so excited and it was so much fun, to bounce off each other. there were so many moments where the chemistry between the characters felt so genuine

shawn: and there's the scene where they're geeking out over siska, you know "i've got the lunchbox" and that was a lot of improv too, because we were really able to get into our irl geekiness. honorable mentions to the avp conversation and any chance i got to talk like arnold schwartzenegger

[all of them start doing actor impersonations]

q: i was playing the newest ac:origins, and i spotted the aiden easter egg, and i wanted to ask you, who would you guys love to see in the future watch dogs games, sequels, or other ubi games-- do you want to see your characters show up in future games?

shawn: i'd love to see more ubi crossovers. when i saw the first wd1 game, i was CONVINCED it was going to be the next assassins creed. and you know, now i know there are crossovers and everything, but i would absolutely love to play wrench again in the future, but i'd love to that in the context of playing with ruffin, or john, or tasia, because wrench is at his best when he's with them. and i do play a character in ac:origins!

johnathan: it's wrench!

shawn: it's totally wrench

johnathan: any reason to get in the room with these guys-- i think i speak for everyone when i say any chance to get together again would be great

ruffin: i wanna see us in a new city, helping another cell of dedsec, like i want to see that, you know?

johnathan: wd1 was very aiden pearce, but wd2 was more characters, a lot more going on. i want to see that again, you know.

shawn: you know, people don't tell us, and if we did know we wouldn't be able to talk about it, but i think we can say that wd2 was popular enough and that popularity came in part from the diversity that they might make a reappearance. tbone came back in a dlc, was super popular, and showed up in wd2. so i'm hopeful-- if i ever got that phone call it would be a very happy day!

q: what was the first video game you ever played?

johnathan: the first one i can think of was on atari, you had to climb these blocks and answer math questions

ruffin: atari as well, and it was ping pong. it was pong. it was the 90s, but it was my father's system, i wasn't old enough to have one of my own

johnathan: which atari was it, the commodore or..?

ruffin: can't remember, but we still have it at my parents

shawn: my first computer was a commodore 64. my first game was, and i'm gonna date myself here, was pong. i went someplace with my parents, late 70s, and they had this massive computer system you powered up, and i was just floored.

johnathan: what are you playing now these days?

shawn: i'm head over heels in elite dangerous these days, a space game, and i've been playing rainbow six, what do you play?

q: fallout 4!

johnathan: ooooh, i wanna try that in VR. i love fallout. i've been playing a lot fo PUBG these days, but it's so hard.

shawn: i wanna play that sooooo bad

ruffin: i just played through the last of us for the third time, i'm obsessed with that game. every time, i find new things, i've been increasing the difficulty every time i play through it. i can't wait for the last of us 2.

shawn: you seen the trailer for it?

ruffin: THE TRAILER'S OUT?

shawn: it's sick

ruffin: you watched it without me?

shawn: nah man, i waited for you!

q: what was your inspiration for the game and for the pomegrapple?

johnathan: oh, right, jeez, the horatio line

ruffin: that was a scripted thing, these writers were playing on the idea that these big companies want to have the most healthy, genetically modified foods available, and it sounded so much fun that michael, horatio's actor, we really had a lot of fun with it. in the game, there's been so much development before the actors are brought on, even in the audition the characters are very fleshed out. when i read marcus's slides, i was like, this person is something i could do in my sleep, that's me, and then the creative team let us really do a lot ourselves. i did a lot of research on anonymous and hackers and you can see it in the game, going from just trolling to really honestly hacktivism

shawn: as far as wrench is concerned, the inspiration was kind of handed to me. when we first made wrench for a vertical slice, they were shooting it, they had wrench, and they originally conceived of him being this tough, gruff, brawler tough guy, and the director thought it was a bit of a cliche, and it was douchey to make him like that because people were expecting that. the director had worked with me on wd1, and asked me to bring the comedy to wrench instead of what the writers had expected, and that really meshed well i think. there was a character from mr. robot, i think? that he wanted me to watch, and i never did but it became clear what direction he wanted from me there. so that's where wrench came form.

johnathan: inspiration for josh? it's really hard to say, i felt an enormous weight-- i found out late in the audition process that they'd changed him from this big, loud youtube funnyman to something more muted and giving him aspergers. and you know, i didn't have much time to bring that in, but now i had this role where i really needed to look at these hundreds of people with autism who needed me to do this right, and so i did my best to research and figure that out, because i couldn't afford to screw this up. so that gives me some of the base for setting him up.

q: for me, as someone with aspergers, i'd never really played the games, but actually having a character with that is super important for me. i haven't touched either of the games, what should i look for that some people might miss, like easter eggs?

shawn: for the first game, it's a good game, it was deservedly criticized for the driving mechanics, but in both games definitely take advantage of the hacking mechanics. that's what the game is centered around, and you can go in guns ablazing, but the hacking is the main thing

q: can i get a wrench/josh scene?

[impov scene that is genuinely hilarious but i can't fucking transcribe it because they're going too fast but oh my god]

shawn: great improv there

johnathan: i hate computers with a passion, i'm glad you think so. someone told me to add in a liquid cooler, and i was like "that's terrible it'll break everything" and then i found out that it doesn't involve liquid in the pc. so i have one now.

q: does wrench have an actual first and last name?

shawn: not that i know of! i was only ever told that his name was the wrench.

q: what would you name him?

johnathan: garfield

ruffin: alfonso

shawn: ALFONSO THE THIRD and he talks like this [in a snooty accent] but i feel like he'd have a really normal name like jason...

ruffin: bourne

shawn: [LAUGHS] jason jones something like that

q: there's a mission in the game where marcus is about to take down P8, and marcus says his name is reginald?

shawn: oh, good eye, i'd missed that. REGINAL WORTHINGTON THE THIRD. there you go. canon now.

ruffin: hey guys! i, unfortunately have to cut out early, i got an audition last night i need to prep for. you guys are amazing, you mean the world to us, and thank you so much for this opportunity. love you all!

johnathan: [inaudible] next week?

ruffin: you know it!

shawn: i'll be lurking in the bushes

ruffin: i know your spot, i know what it smells like

johnathan: oh god, you know what it smells like?

[more banter for bit]

q: was there any voice lines that were extremely difficult and needed a lot of takes?

johnathan: for me, it wasn't anything in the cinematics. they needed me to make sounds of josh going down the slide, for when he was playable. and for the life of me, i couldn't make any sound that liked! maybe that's why he's not playable.

shawn: johnathan had to do a lot more with technical terms than i did... i can't think of any real examples of lines that were hard to do, but for me it was keeping wrench with a consistent tone. like i talk low and slow like this, but wrench was really high and fast paced, so i'd slip sometimes-- staying consistent was the real challenge there so i didn't make him sound off. because i talk so fast with wrench, i had to factor in the voice filter that would be added after the fact, so i have to over enunciate things so they'd be audible. and even now, playing, sometimes wrench says something in game and i have no idea what he said, and i said the line!

q: did you lose your voice from screaming?

shawn: i didn't, actually! but voice recording is really intense, it's not just dialogue, it's doing stuff like-- we call them Oh Nos, those sounds you make when you get hit by a bullet or something

johnathan: falling from 10 ft, falling from 20 ft, falling from 100 ft!

shawn: on fire for 20 seconds, on fire for 40 seconds, you know, but i've been doing it for long enough now that my voice is trained for it now

[husky talk and banter, because the asker is known to the VAs]

q: i had to improv a question because mine was asked but-- if you guys recall, what would be something that was really frustrating, pushing your limit, while either acting or recording for your role?

shawn: it's a good question... nothing immediately jumps to mind, but that's because the cast and crew was so amazing from beginning to end. there was no drama, no egos, it was just amazing. for me personally, my challenge was that back injury i had, and i had to work through that because i didn't want to let this pass me by. so i was in a lot of pain, and on occasion just physically moving around was frustrating, because i'm a very physical person, and i couldn't do it. and sometimes we'd get into these mocap cars, and there's no floor on these things, and sometimes my foot would go through the floor and it hurt really bad. but it was a small price to play.

johnathan: there wasn't much frustrating i think, but there was a lot of stuff where i had to really just let go and trust in the director instead of getting everything in my head and worrying about it. there was nothing frustrating about this, because it was such a dream come true, and all of us kind of knew that, and no one took it for granted.

johnathan: yeah, josh's idle! and the thing is, i could tell in an instant, looking at josh's idle standing in the garage, that it wasn't me moving, that was shawn moving and mimicking my movements a little, and it was sort of funny

q: shawn, can you speak french?

[shawn and johnathan both start talking in french]

shawn: i can talk in english with an accent, because the people who live here talk like this if english is their second language [mock accent]

q: can you tell us what you said in english?

shawn: i was saying i was bilingual, my mom is french and my father anglophone, but i can speak both and i can do a couple different regional dialects in french. like hillbilly french.

shawn: we should name this the watch dogs anniversary push-to-talk event

q: is there any location in the game or real life sanfran that's your favorite?

shawn: hmm... well i've never been to sanfran, the developers went down there to be as faithful to it as possible, and fans have told me it's a pretty faithful rendition, but one of my favorite places in the game is the gaming shop just outside the hackerspace. i'm a big gamer, like tabletop, and my friend used to own a gaming shop, so the atmosphere was very welcoming for me.

johnathan: i really like exploring silicon valley, i like the orderliness of it and how there's nothing in your way, and i like doing bike jumps on the beaches in game

q: if your characters didn't become hackers, what do you think their profession would be?

johnathan: hmm, well, a lot of josh's future is carved out for him by how ctOS labels him, and that really affects how he can get into things, because nowhere he would want to be would take him with that on his record. he might build small rc cars and stuff, but he wouldn't have that kind of opportunity

shawn: for wrench, i think if he hadn't been wrench, he would've fallen into some mundane existence and really gotten into alcohol and drug abuse, because wrench really gets a lot out of what he's doing now, like the power of it and what he does, and there's a visceral joy to a certain level of violence, and he really needs that. if you can justify it, and you can get into it against real people, it's intoxicating. if wrench couldn't do that as a hacker, i think he'd find it another way-- either joining some kind of organization, or being on the black market, because he really falls into that world. i used to do factory jobs and i couldn't stand it, i absolutely couldn't stand it, and for me i had to pursue things that made me happy, and i think everyone needs to do that

q: when wrench mentions dublin, ohio, it's really inconsiquential, but it blows my mind because it's like half and hour from my house-- and i was wondering, how much time do you guys spend playing the game?

shawn: i don't wanna go turn on the ps4, but i've spent enough time to do all the missions and do a lot of the trophies, but i haven't really finished the DLC because there are so many games i want to play and i don't have enough time. i'm a completionist, which is why i stay away from games like fallout 4, so i can't let myself play it.

q: the really iconic scene where tbone and wrench meet for the first time, was that scripted or?

shawn: it was scripted, what we worked on was all the physical blocking of the scene, the movement. john was a blast to work with, he keeps you on your feet, and the script calls for some tension, so we kept trying to ratchet that up where wrench is trying to aggress him all the way up to the moment where wrench goes "okay! we're good" and being best friends and going to get a beer. that was something john liked with tbone, was having him have a beer.

q: if you were allowed to create your own dedsec crewmember misison, what would it be?

shawn: that's hard to answer, because that game really covered a lot of types-- actually, i would have a mission, where you have a very unfit president gets elected, and you have to hack in and get his tax returns from the uh, from

johnathan: the norweigiens

shawn: FROM THE NORWEIGENS and i think that would be something that like, we dont' want to get political, but it would be very in tun with the game

johnathan: president thruss

shawn: wrench for president, i'd be down for that

johnathan: i guess the most interesting part of games i play is story, and given that wd2 is a game type that lets you play things out of order, it's hard to connect to characters-- so i'd like to see missions where we can connect with the characters. i want to see more about sitara, about marcus, about horatio, you know?

shawn: but no wrench? i'm right here

johnathan: [laughs] i think wrench gets a really good focus in that masked mission, where we see that he's got this deeply emotional sensitivity, and that's one of the things that's really cool about him

q: what's wrench's sexuality?

shawn: oh, i actually want to talk about this! wrench gets shipped with everyone, with marcus, josh, tbone, characters from other franchises-- the thing i like about wrench is that in the game, they never make a decision about his sexuality, and that's nice, because the thing about pop culture is when you make it, people can do what they want with it-- no meaning copyright obviously, but if people want to interpret wrench's sexuality in a way that makes them happy, whether its in shipping or identifying as him, that's good! so i don't want to make a determination one way or the other and pigeonhole him, taking him away from people, that kind of sense.

q: how much of scenes are adlibbed?

shawn: it's more what percentage, right? so i'd say anywhere from 0-30% of a scene. the writers really trusted us to bring our personality to the charatcers, we were told that the script was guideline, a stepping stone, and we could just... do things! and if that thing connected, it was great, and we'd shoot it again, so our freedom to do things was vital. our non-mocap scenes and non-cinematic scenes were more rigid, because we all shot our lines seperately, so they had to mesh up, you couldn't improv it.

johnathan: for me, the improv moments were little bits here and there for mannerisms, but at the end of the day, you're hired because you can bring life to a character

q: any big things you guys are working on?

johnathan: uhhh nothing, i don't think, i've got some small roles on tv, but wd2 may be the biggest thing i've ever done. [talk about some more casting opportunities he has]

shawn: for my part, nothing major either, i did just finish recording voicework for a... new character in a videogame that's a pretty popular franchise, i voice a character that will be coming out in a while. i can't say the company, can't say the game, it hasn't been announced yet.

shawn: i'm doing a personal project, i don't know how many people know this about me, i did a fanfilm about the punisher call the punisher: no mercy, i wrote, co-directed, produced, acted in, and i had a blast, so i'm making another fan film! i can't say what it's about, but i'm having a lot of fun with the crew

q: what do you think happened to wrench in the past to make him the way he is?

shawn: okay, so, i was never given a comprehensive background to wrench, no background, name, history. so my reasoning is, from a young age he was a troublemaker, a shitstirrer, and one day he got into it with the cops, resisting arresting, and got fucked up by the cops, wrenched his back, and that's part of why he's like this. that's part of his mistrust for law, cops, authority, all of that, it left him scarred and he didn't get the support he could've used. that's one possible story, there's stuff with his appearance too, and everyone has really good theories about it

[question about gaming and steam, some banter related to previous questions]

q: what tabletop system do you play?

shawn: i play GURPs, it's an old system but i like it

q: if you had the power to hack anyone with no repercussions, what would you do?

shawn: uh, refer to my earlier answer about tax returns-- without repercussions? i think i'd fight the same fight that dedsec does

johnathan: what i would want to do, and what i would actually do, are two very different things i think-- i don't know if i could handle that kind of responsibility, because it's not my calling, and i don't really thing i would deserve. maybe get myself some more money... what are the limits here? no limits? expose all the evils of the world, erase student debt, you know

q: what are your thoughts on the shuffler mystery?

shawn: i'm a bit embarrassed to say that i'd heard the term shuffler all over, but i have... no idea what it is

johnathan: me neither

one of the mods: oh my GOD, my whole life was the shuffler thing, it was the whole reason i became a mod on the server, and you don't know it... [explains the shuffler ARG]

shawn: so we can just... skip all the work and use the benefit of the work you guys put in! i guess i have to replay wd2

mod: wrench was obessed with it

shawn: oh my god, i never knew about it. that's something i find that fans expect us to remember things and we just don't, because i just can't remember half of it

johnathan: yeah, the cinematics are easy, but when you have 50 or 60 pages of dialogue, you just can't remember all of it

johnathan: at the end of the day, we're lucky enough to do these things with you guys, the fans, and you're the ones that really make it for us. so thank you for that.

shawn: when you do a job as an actor, it's always fleeting, you can't stay forever. watchdogs, for me, was the closest i've ever been to having a regular job, seeing people every day, every week, every month, and it was so rewarding to work on this game with people i liked and it was never a job for me, it was wonderful. and then, after the game comes out, having all this massive outpouring of fanart and love and seeing people contacting john and reaching out to me because of the representation and the diversity, seeing people taking the time to reach out to us, there's literally no greater reward. the money i got paid, it's gone. but the friends i've made over this game, that's the greatest reward, and they're permanent in a sense.

Heeey can you tell the people that are running this that it would be kind to list the price somewhere really obvious? It's not very expensive, but some printed zines are super expensive, so it was nervous-making that I had to search the page to find the $5 price.

$5 is great, it means I can get 2, and keep one to look at the original art as-is, and colour the other :)
