yeah, like the thing is, sans really is a cool character! especially when he was introduced i was like 'o cool a fat slovenly depressed character who people love'. but its a bit painful to not get a lot of attention to your favs, or have them so underanalyzed in comparison... and people really neglect characters who are its core (asriel/flowey and alphys are all very essential, chara is too but i think there is a lot of discussion about them good and bad) I even think when Sans talk about the 'anomaly' he's actually referring Flowey - the cause of the resets prior to Frisk+Chara messing around, the multiple repeats their world has gone through before Frisk arrives on the scene. (i think people make sans more omniscient than he really is too - most of the time it just seems to be guesswork with the timelines, and him being observant of frisk while being aware of the existence of timelines)
I don't even participate in FF7 fandom, so this complaint may be out of line, but: I legitimately do not understand where woobie!Sephiroth came from. I was really surprised when I played the game because what I'd absorbed through fandom osmosis had so little connection to what I was seeing. Burning down a village full of innocent people for no other reason than because you can is not the action of a sympathetically tortured soul, and the "Jenova is in control" theory doesn't apply at that point, because he hadn't fallen in the Lifestream yet. That was all him. (I came away from the game with the impression of Sephiroth as a malignant narcissist who just got all his delusions of grandeur validated- he really is special and magical and better than all those other mere mortals who exist only at his whim. And the way he goes out of his way to mess with Cloud's head reads to me like he's holding one hell of a grudge for Nibelheim, because how dare such a lesser, inferior being beat him, so Sephiroth's going to tear down his entire being.) (I know Crisis Core had Sephiroth acting like a friendly, reasonable human being before Nibelheim, but a) I don't buy that he instantly 180'd from "actually good person" to "mass murderer" just because he found out he was a half-alien magic science experiment and think he was probably an asshole to start with, even if he hid it and b) Misunderstood Woobie Sephiroth has been around since the game came out.)
He's not a misunderstood woobie. He's a guy who felt removed and different from the people around him, raised as a scientific experiment and made to be a soldier, and decided the best thing to do with those feelings was to kill people off the clock, and then keep on doing it because lol he's the only person who matters. At least until he gets that massive hate-on for Cloud. Jenova influencing him is an option, since Sephiroth can sure influence Cloud later on, but yeah, burning Nibelheim was straight up unnecessary assholery by a guy who decided the townspeople deserved it for... existing, or something. (Honestly, Crisis Core built up to it better than the original game's guy who went from a weird thoughtful guy to reading some books and deciding to destroy the world; it gave him friends and comrades who betrayed him the company, turning on him and spouting poetry about how they were monsters... before he too found out that he was Not Human, thanks to Hojo Hojoing around the place.)
Yeah, like, he's had a messed-up life- being raised from birth as a supersoldier by Hojo is not a recipe for a healthy and emotionally-balanced person to start with, and finding out that you're a half-alien science experiment and everyone else made the same way you are is a twisted monster is definitely the kind of thing that can screw someone up- but he's not a nice person who was hurt until he started hurting people in retaliation, he's a messed-up guy who dealt with upsetting things by deciding he might as well kill everyone. And I've seen people acting like it's the former, and I don't get it.
I like sans a lot, but there is too much of him and not enough of his brother. So many sans and frisk fics that completely ignore the Canonical Good Friendship between frisk and papyrus.
You know if I were to choose two characters to be the embodiment of a healthy relationship it would not be Lea and Isa.
Well it was a Steven Universe au.... where Lea was Ruby and Isa was Sapphire. I can understand the casting on a superficial level but....no. Just no.
Oh, I mentioned this somewhere else and it might also qualify as "I don't even go here so I'm not sure this is my business" since I don't really read porn fic, let alone guro, but I was deeply, deeply disappointed with the fandom when I looked through the Mistborn section on AO3 and found no horrifying Dead Dove body horror/gore fic. Like, come on, guys, this isn't even my kink and I can recognize the opportunities here when I see them. This is a setting with people running around with spikes through their eyes that stick out the back of their heads, blob monsters that eat corpses and incorporate the bones into their bodies, people who can heal from being reduced to the consistency of chunky salsa, monsters that grow and grow until they get too big for their skin and it starts splitting open, and Spoiler an entire magic system based around murdering people with metal spikes and then driving those spikes into someone else's body. And that's not even considering that the original trilogy happens in a hellish dystopia with an oppressive caste system. Or the powers that let you mess with people's emotions. There also appeared to be an extreme shortage of deity spadesfic. Spoiler There was some redrom Ati/Leras, but none of it was as Ruin and Preservation (one was after they died, one was a college AU(?!)). Ruin <3< Preservation appears to be an untapped market and this is weird as hell to me.
Overwatch fandom's whole fucking Thing with calling every hero under the sun cheap and easy and takes no skill unfun to play against blah blah blah. Like, fuck. Widow is a basic ass sniper, and I still see people upset that she can one shot them from across the map like that's not entirely what she is supposed to fucking do. Roadhog takes no skill, like poor positioning won't just see you feeding the enemy 600 hp worth of ult charge, like good hooks ain't punishment for poor positioning on your part, like he's not this massive, squishy, slow firing target that you can decimate at range. Mei being able to slow people is stupid and awful, like she doesn't need to be super close, like your team shouldn't be protecting you from a hero who can slow one person at a time. I'm so fucking mad. Like, Junkrat gets a lot of flack for needing no aim, you just spam damage at a choke of something, and it's like. Yeah! Area denial is his fucking thing!! That's what he's good at!! And he pays for it by being less good at 1 v 1s with more agile characters!! Sometimes!!!! Characters have roles that they fulfill!!!! And sometimes you have to tailor your playstyle!!!!! Around those roles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So that you can win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because if you just play however you fucking want with no regards for what you're going against and their strengths and weaknesses then you have earned your goddamned loss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know the answer to that. And @tinyhydra Yes! So much! It's people who don't ever want to have to change their playstyle to counter an enemy. Or even have to think. "Waah I have no IWIN button *sobs*"
