also, i think those assholes have forgotten, don't know or are willfully ignoring the fact that people can like ships 'cause they are lots of fun to play with, not 'cause they believe those ships reflect anything about how relationships do and/or should work in real life. like, i like sans/papyrus and chara/asriel and stancest, and that has nothing to do with my relationships with my brothers! i just like the character dynamics, and adding romance and/or sex to them!
FLASH. Like. Don't get me wrong. I like Barry. But he could stand to develop some friggin emotional maturity. The whole thing with Iris? Yeah, No. Honestly I would prefer almost anyone as a main character. Caitlin's exciting medical drama/thriller! Cisco and SCIENCE! with a side of Lisa Snart being a fully realized person! The Rogues' supervillain adventures and their CC underground shenanigans! Iris, badass investigative reporter! Come on, DC. Like, while Len and Mick are running around with the legends I would love a show about Lisa taking over the Rogues and making Central hers. Also Eddie. I liked Eddie. Why did Eddie have to die. (jk, I know Eddie died so that Barry wouldn't have to compete with a genuinely stand-up guy who actually treats Iris with respect. it's like the writers never heard of letting their main character grow as a person and also polyamory.)
I hate “”parental royed “” so much It’s like people who don’t ship it feel like they need to explain their not being down with the fandomwide otp by giving them a different, equally ooc close personal relationship No!! Roy is his commanding officer!!! Between them there is grudging respect, arguing, and snark!!! Roy recruited him to the military as a fucking freshly traumatized twelve year old, he is absolutely not a father figure of any kind!!! The man has almost zero parental instincts!!! That’s not to say I think his relationship with Ed is harmful, I adore their relationship and I think Roy was an incredibly positive force in Ed’s life, but it was absolutely not a familial relationship at all Also there are so many other options to choose from, Ed collected dads like they were going out of style throughout the series Also people never seem to let Al get in on this supposed parental relationship, like come on! At least go all in on this!
I have very similar feelings about MCU!Tony Stark and Peter Parker, minus the part about it being a positive relationship. Tony absolutely used and manipulated Peter in civil war, despite the fact that he felt guilty about it and knew it was wrong, and if he’d cared about what was good for Peter he would have left him the fuck alone instead of using his hero worship to drag him into a conflict he had no stake in and knew nothing about. What about those actions says “dad” to people?
I saw one of those x-character-is-ace blogs post about Merrill from dragon age, and nope nope nope. Usually I don’t mind sexuality headcanons, but when you’re talking about a character who is heavily characterised as neurodivergent, infantilised by most of the fandom and has dialogue about how she finds other characters attractive and about how she enjoys sex, it really aggravates me.
1) Asexuality does not equal sex repulsion. 2) How the fuck should what "half the fandom" does concern OP? Y'all headcanon characters as fucking whatever and if somebody points out inconsistency y'all are like "lmao we angered the straights XDDD" so let aces live for once maybe
Yeah, I don't think that stems from ableism. Headcanons are different from "How dare you sexualize this pure innocent character who's basically a child"
yo this is the gripes thread? people can gripe? and yeah i agree it annoys me to that i so consistently see autistic-coded characters headcanoned asexual even when theyre explicitly sexual. feels bad yo
ok fair. i should let people gripe. hi im autistic and lowkey ace and my sex drive is through the roof. sorry we're so fucking inconvenient to you.
hi im also autistic and lowkey ace maybe you could tone down the fucking random anger to people talking about gripes in the gripe thread?
I am ace and autistic. It’s just that this character is a) explicitly sexual in the source material and b) seen as a precious misguided child throughout than fan base. I wouldn’t have care half as much if they’d, you know, given a reason.
Like I get why you're pissed but the culture of the gripe threads is that people are allowed to post gripes and they aren't argued with.
If this were like, the atheism gripe thread or something similar, where there are explicit guidelines for whether/how to engage with the gripes, then sure. But I’ve never had the impression that that applied to all gripe threads? Maybe I’m wrong but as far as I understand, unless it’s stated otherwise in the thread, people are allowed to gripe, but other people are not prohibited from reacting if they disagree/are offended?
I didn't know that, but I could have guessed. and even then it wasn't worth bothering, it's not like I can change their minds or do anything besides ruining the mood. my bad.
I think it's mostly a case of people kind of expect not to be attacked for their gripes, because having a thread marked specifically for complaining kind of carries the assumption that you can complain about things without being run out of there for having unpopular opinions. Disagreeing, fine, attacking- and I'm afraid that initial response did come off as an attack- not so much.
I've generally come to view it as the expectation for all the gripe threads. In part because this exact sort of issue has come up in one of the fandom based ones in the past. It's also come up in the ykinmkato thread too. Again in the fashion of 'Person makes a gripe. Another person disagrees or attacks opinion. Person who made gripe says that they came here just to gripe. Fight occurs perhaps or it quiets down.' Given how fandom spaces elsewhere can be towards opinions that don't fit norms or aren't worded nicely enough I can see why people do want it to be a place where they can whine unchallenged. People get nasty.
That makes sense to me. I'd certainly prefer that nobody fears they will be run out of here for having an unpopular opinion, whether it's a gripe or a gripe response.
