Oooh. Okay, one of the scenes from My Love Story makes so much more sense now. Like - I knew that it was pretty obviously what it was, I just didn't understand why it was that way? Spoiler: spoips The scene in question was the protag - a big buff dude himself - working as a server at a cafe that near-exclusively serves big buff men, and it's played very obviously as "it's a maid cafe for gay men". The protag's best friend is primarily concerned that the protag doesn't realize what kind of job it is (and he...pretty obviously doesn't realize that it's anything more than just being a standard cafe server, with a clientele that looks a lot like him and is very friendly and great at tipping), and is Concern that he may get pressured into something he's not comfortable with and/or cause his very new girlfriend to panic and assume that he's not actually into girls if she finds out. Turns out that he was working the job so he could earn some money to buy a birthday present for his girlfriend, and the patrons are very "aw, too bad he's not actually our type, but they make such a cute couple" when they find out.
The fact that men being shitty about films with all women casts is resulting in complaints about the Birds of Prey film all being lumped together as just men hating women is irritating the fuck out of me. Maybe I just hate it because it's fucking up my favorite DC character. Maybe other people have other reasons for hating it. Jesus fucking christ. Also people really need to stop being misogynistic shitlords about media with all women casts.
Oh my gods i hate that shit so much, especially when you're trying to have, idk, an actual discussion about why you dont like the thing and some idiot comes in to be like "and also women bad hurrhurrhurr"
Y'all ever have a character you kind of like, and you'd like to support them publicly and promote them to other people and shit, but the ONLY person who currently publicly likes that character in your tiny fandom is just Aggressively And Unapologetically The Worst Kind Of Person >:T Why couldn't you have decided to stan a character in some bigger fandom, where your shitty personality would have at least been diluted a little
I can’t find the sprawling dramatic Castlevania longfic I so desperately want. I’m not sure what it even is, just I can’t find any. There’s plenty of good fic, but I feel unfulfilled. Spoiler: netflix show spoilers There’s so much lovely OT3 fic but not stuff that most suits my tastes that I can find? It’s all so easy. That’s not a problem with the fic, but it’s not what I really want. I wanna see a Sypha who doesn’t have it all figured out. Whose family and culture aren’t totally accepting and enlightened. Who struggles with expectations and figuring out how she and her important people could fit into a lifestyle that feels authentic to her. And who’s just as likely as the guys to make impulsive decisions and not know what she wants and be far too stubborn for her own good. Frankly, bringing someone like Trevor home to the Speakers sounds like a disaster. He doesn’t hold their culture in such high esteem that he seems like he’d even be interested in assimilating, let alone successful. The other Speakers are probably not going to find him less rude than Sypha does. Like, maybe temporarily if he’s trying super hard for her sake, but that’s not sustainable. I want to see that kind of thing, where it’s not easy, and both of them are angry at each other and themselves. Where realizing their ideas about a good life aren’t compatible breaks both their hearts. And then eventually they figure it out and everyone lives happily ever after, of course. I don’t particularly want Alucard to have not been alone, because that’s the kind of content I’m here for. I crave more drama, not less. I’m here for the super awkward reunions where everyone really had to be pushed into it. And, I would desperately like to see it matter more that Trevor grew up in an overwhelmingly religious culture and has never actually left it, regardless of personal relationship to the church. His family was society as well as vampire hunters who seemed to have some special interest in Dracula. Getting with a man who is a vampire and closely related to Dracula seems like a pretty big deal. All of those things can simultaneously be an issue, it doesn’t have to be just one. And being in a relationship with two people sounds more complicated to figure out, not half normal, like being bisexual doesn’t make you only half queer. I just want three incredibly strong, rash people who don’t know what they’re doing to have a really difficult time figuring out how they fit together, and all be terribly confused about what their emotions are and why. None of them can have a life that looks like their heritage suggests if they’re together, and deciding to do something different than how you were raised is not the same as having the things of your childhood taken from you. Or I’m good with slash too! It’s just such a perfect OT3 opportunity, why not dream big, since neither category is really overflowing with entries that happen to be what I most want. And one last thing. I’m not sure exactly what I mean when I say it feels like there’s not as much vampires as I would wish for in Castlevania fanfic, but that’s how it feels? I feel like I’ve been spoiled by fandoms that are either large enough that someone will eventually write stuff that’s exactly up my alley, or just happen to have a lot of creators with similar taste to mine so that many works cater to my desire for bloody romantic melodrama for goths who never recovered. This is not my most satisfying hyperfixation.
I haven’t actually read it yet, but one of my favorite authors, etherati, has written some castlevania fic. she’s very good with difficult relationships and melodrama, though I don’t know if those are the focus of her castlevania fic!
Don't matter, I'll try it! Frankly the worst that can happen is that eventually I cave and rewatch the show.
Spoiler: this shit right here "Well, hi," said the Main Character. "What's up?" said his Love Interest. "Nothing much. I just want to talk." "Okay, we'll have a bunch of very short sentences that could be condensed into bigger paragraphs." "Should we have action between them?" "Nah." "Any indication that we're doing something besides talking?" "Why would we?" "Oh, good point." "You know what's funny?" "The way we have the exact same speaking style and intonation despite very different character voices in the source material?" "Whoa! That was a long sentence!" "Sorry, I forgot. I'll keep it brief again." "Man, which one was I again?" "Doesn't matter, the author won't clarify." "Well I just hope the reader is highlighting this as they read." "Haha. I've remembered I have limbs and I can move again," said the Main Character, smiling mysteriously. "Well, time for another ten lines of dialogue with no indication of who is talking." "Man, this is great fun." "Love reading this shit." "Too bad our author isn't bright enough to format this as a pesterlog fic." "Yeah, that would provide too much context I guess." "Haha right?" "Haha right!"
I didn't realize this wasn't the fic thread (whoops) but for a more specific fandom gripe: none of the Imperial Radch crossover fics are the kind of crossover fic I want to read, and that ones that do crossover the properties I'm interested in do the "universe fusion thing" instead of the "one universe meets another universe and culture clash occurs". I want to see Starfleet's horrified response to the Radch, pls.
There's a bit in one of the Thursday Next books where two people do the thing in that spoiler to test whether someone they're talking to is a fictional character, because a human being in the physical world with them would have no trouble telling who's speaking at any given time, but someone interacting with just the text would lose track. This isn't relevant to fandom gripes, it just reminded me that the Thursday Next books exist and are deeply weird.
Well fuck me sideways. This is,,, exactly what I wanted? How the fuck did I miss this?? The tags alone should have drawn me in, as “weird and ominous sex scene” is my entire jam and my one weakness. Thank you vuatson for my life
HUZZAH etherati is really the greatest, idk if you were ever in the watchmen fandom but she wrote the BEST zombie fic series!
I WASN'T BUT I READ SOME FIC BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT ENOUGH BECAUSE I THINK I WOULD REMEMBER THAT HOLY SHIT Good golden fuck, there’s an apology tag for quoting too much TS Eliot, and this one is named after a line from E-Bow the Letter, which I’ve known by heart probably since New Adventures in Hi-Fi was a new album. How have I not known of this author before?!
man you know what bugs me? fire emblem fandom has no good oc fic and it makes me sad THERE'S SO MUCH POTENTIAL????? WHY DOES NO ONE WRITE THE OC FIC THAT I WANT time for me to start like five new oc fics whoops and never publish them cuz I get distracted halfway through by a new idea
Spoiler: Fire emblem 3 houses stuff i trend ive noticed that is extremely annoying is that edelgard is seen as culpable for any future failings of the system she implements in her good end while dimitri and claude aren't treated the same for the system they perpetuate. And i mean...that makes a bit of sense, I suppose, but on the other hand it feels like inaction or defensive action in support of a system absolves you of your position as a noble in a corrupt system (claude probably doesnt rlly count for fodlan bc of the alliances wierd system but he is still double nobility and we dont know the exact situation is almyra)
Spoiler: To clarify im honestly not interested in reducing the story to a blame game but when people do treat the story like that but dont even have consistant logic its. Arg
Spoiler: Bojack spoiler I usually don't care abt ppls theories cause like, theyre fun but 'the last ep is fake its just a dream or imagining, a trick of bojack's brain' is a bad take
i've been in Critical Role fandom for years and ive seen a lot of Bad Takes. but tonights take about the Monsterhearts oneshot is a strong contender for Worst Take. https://twitter.com/thestraykiwi/status/1228572200665411589?s=19 For context: said oneshot had an openly nb player, two openly bi players, two nb characters and everyone made out with everyone
