Okay, show of hands, how many of us out there were deeply craving a crossover between Stargate SG1 and Avatar: The Last Airbender? Anyone? Anyone?... Bueller? Anyway, I grant you all The Dragon-King's Temple, which has post-series Toph and Zuko finally going on their life-changing field trip together, and in the process end in the same Goa'uld facility as Major Carter and Dr Frasier. Incredible hijinks ensue. The effort that author has put forth in having both settings coexist is pretty amazing, and they take the tricky route of keeping a language barrier for most of the time. Also it's one of those crossovers where both sides are given a fair shake instead of 'everyone from fandom A beats up the cast of Fandom B because I didn't like Fandom B'. Then Toph blows up an MRI machine. The author also did a Miraculous Ladybug/Avengers crossover. It's also very good but I'm not bonkers about it like I am this one.
Man, I aspire to leaving those kinds of summaries on all my bookmarks. Thorough enough to outline what they like and dislike, giving a little more idea what the themes of the story are.
I have been tipped off to the stash of fanfic an author I like wrote before she went pro. It's as quality as you would expect, and apparently she was really into Drarry. I am full of delight. (I won't name her or her pro work here because she doesn't want the connection to be googleable. If you guess who she is, please don't post it anywhere. But do read the fic.)
@TheSeer the author in question has made her pro name publicly connected on her fan tumblr several times, though? I'm confused. I won't name her because it's entirely possible she changed her policy, but afaik astolat has always been very open about the connection between her pro and fan work.
Last I heard she wasn’t taking out full page ads, but she also wasn’t keeping it private? Would also like to know if this policy has changed, to better act in accordance with her wishes. But yeah, astolat is amazing. Her works cover so many fandoms, and she has done what I consider to be the rarest of treasures: Transformers fic written by someone who obviously knows how computers work or fakes it so damn well it doesn’t matter.
I learned about her preferences at second or third hand and I might be being overcautious in my interpretation. And if the cat's already out of the bag on her own tumblr it might be moot. If you have better reason to know her wishes than what I say my friend said she read that the author said, then use your own judgment.
Okay, good to know, thank you. Searching her profic last name on tumblr still pulls up enough results that I'm comfortable connecting them in fan circles, at least. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed an announcement in the last few months so I could edit some content accordingly.
I wouldn't really say it's "before she went pro," since her first book was 2006 and her most recently-posted fanfic was in May of this year. :::PPP She's also the person who first proposed creating AO3, for those interested in fan histoy.
... whoa. I knew she was one of us, even before I found her fic. I didn't know she was one of our heroes. Or that she was still writing fanfic. I didn't even check the dates...
-googling around because i'm clueless about people and their identities- -loses my absolute shit I LOVE THAT WOMAN ALL HAIL-
Caution is admirable when it comes to people's personal information! For all that it's an open secret at most, there are things like articles about the Hugo that seem to discuss her as if she were two different people, so I'm not about to start making declarations about what she definitely wants. But yeah, she has pretty much done it all, vids, fic, proposing and pioneering AO3, and I think I heard she did some programming for this iirc, which would explain how she computers so well in her TF fic.
Unpretty once said that the best thing about that ship is that she can write fluff and still have people message her to tell her she made them cry and she's a monster. :::PPP
arapha de genere lupum by greyingwarden 13/? chapters GoT time-travel fic, with the Stark kids coming back in the take-over-your-younger-self sense. Six savvy, angry kids. There are some fun outsider POVs. Also dark Sansa. I love dark Sansa.
A Wolf Amongst Lions by Kallypso 108/108 chapters GoT: while at Harrenhal, Tywin Lannister learns the identity of his cupbearer. Now Arya must learn to play the game. There was really not enough Tywin-Arya interaction in either the show or the books, and yes it was ridiculous but there was so much potential and here it is. Tywin finally gets to train a child who is simultaneously ruthless, intelligent, and not Tyrion, and Arya learns to plan beyond just shoving her knife into people. She still kills a lot of people, to be sure; after all, Tywin Lannister is not the nicest guy in Westeros.
400k+ words of Arya learning another kind of manipulation? Marks for later for a rainy day, oh man. Spoiler: Quote from 1st chapter This is a great summary of what the rest of the fic will be, isn't it? :p
just spent the last two days reading this. overall quite good. (the author seems to have recurring issues with homophones - rode/road was a big one - but i'm impressed enough with the rest of it that i'll let it slide.) also, Spoiler: vague spoilers for this fic who the fuck told the author that was okay?? rip my fucking heart out why don't you. ;----;
Spoiler Yeah, that hurts, doesn't it? And you'd never expect it to hurt, either! That's called a challenge, and the author succeeded, I'd say.
