Had some FF7 themed dreams last night and woke up with a craving - does anyone have any Cloud/Sephiroth or Cloud/Zack/Sephiroth that doesn't completely woobify or ukefy Cloud? Let the boy be the badass we know and love, dammit.

Newly widowed Yanli goes wandering away from all the eyes and formalities, down into the depths beneath Carp Tower. She happens upon a man who is not remotely bashful about the fact that she has found him stitching a body together. Xue Yang is not a good person, but he’s not pretending to be one either, and that means everything in a place like this.

Two people from very different backgrounds treat each other as equals while engaging in various illicit activities in a necromancy basement, because what has society done for them recently? Very nsfw, and do mind the tags, but a lot kinder than one might think.

I fear I don’t have a publicly accessible bookmarks page. It’s for the best because my existing lists tend to include nearly everything I’ve finished and some things I haven’t. But I will continue bringing the surprising and interesting Xue Yang content right on over here as events warrant!

I’m currently looking at myself like I am the dead dove bag. I didn’t set out thinking I wanted a bunch of Xue Yang content, and it definitely isn’t all I read. (I’ll probably rec some other, different character stuff in the near future.) I guess it was less obvious that I would gravitate that way because there are just so many characters who are some combination of pretty, cracked in the head, obsessive, gleefully chaotic, slightly maimed, holding onto an outsized grudge with childish fury, mercenary, really happy about murder, and sadomasochistic. But Xue Yang is exactly the kind of character I would want to read about. I really don’t know what I expected.

 

I promised recs and I'm here to deliver. I have so many recs to give. Both TV show and book 'verses, mixed wildly.

First let me just recommend EHyde's excellent monster related works. Because apparently there just weren't enough monsters in canon? Well I wanted more. There are some very clever ideas, ranging from cute to creepy to just plain cool.

But first, one that's nicely horrifying for reasons other than monsters:

Death of a Ghost by Gotcocomilk
Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, but although it is explicit, the ship is more part of a larger story about building and repairing relationships of all kinds than the main focus.
Lotus Pier is haunted. A shadowy apparition with glowing red eyes wanders the docks at night. Jin Ling, trying desperately to live up to the glory of the previous generation's accomplishments, resolves to slay the ghost. He's ten years old. He doesn't slay the ghost. But he does discover that it's kind, and just as lonely as he is. Canon divergent. A plotty fix-it of sorts, with sacrifices made but in service to one of the most emotionally satisfying outcomes I never knew I wanted so badly.

Lan Xichen/Jin Guangyao, post-canon, WIP that updates relatively slowly

Spoiler: the whole story

You may be wondering how Jin Guangyao is involved in a post-canon fic. You would not be alone.

After almost five years, Lan Xichen has come to the bitter acceptance that seclusion isn't going to fix what ails him. He's still in love with Jin Guangyao. He will always be in love with Jin Guangyao. When a few of his dead friend's overlooked musical compositions are uncovered, he sets about decoding and playing them. They're obviously not just music, but nobody expected what happens next.

Everyone is so cagey and cautious around him, even Wei Wuxian, who definitely knows more about this than he's saying. It's really starting to grate. He's so tired of being kept in the dark for his own good. What good has it actually done him? Maybe he could have helped in some way if only he'd known. He's about to get another chance, because:

Elsewhere, under mysterious circumstances with unknown motives and oddly convenient timing, Jin Guangyao is resurrected.


The first part of the story is finished, but many mysteries remain and I definitely wanted more. The second part doesn't add a ton of forward plot movement as of yet, but it fleshes things out in such a fascinating manner that I felt very satisfied anyway, and so glad to have read it.

The Chief Cultivator doesn't just die in disgrace without leaving unspeakable holes in people's lives. There were those who cared about him and relied on him, and like Lan Wangji before them, they're suffocatingly alone in their grief. "grief negotiations" is the first part, which focuses entirely on Lan Xichen and his experience with the mysterious resurrection. "music, theory" is unfinished but recently updated. It adds so much depth and background with additional points of view. You get Jin Ling trying to deal with losing another family member with drastic consequences both personal and political, as well as Jin Guangyao's extremely traumatized point of view.

So, time travel! You can’t take two steps in this fandom without tripping over a time travel fix-it. There’s some pretty damn good stuff. But I like this one in particular because it’s the opposite of usual.

An Arrow Through Time by syrus_jones
Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji, post-canon with full spoilers, WIP

Lan Wangji passes out directly after the archery contest during an acute sexuality crisis and wakes up in the post-canon future. In bed, with a hot naked man. Where is his ribbon and why is it on this man’s wrist? He totally panics.

Hilarity ensues as our heroes grapple with how to handle a time traveler while trying not to change the future because they’re pretty attached to their lives. Angst also ensues. It’s a comedy, but it seems to hit some readers as very funny and others as deeply tragic.

It does a hell of a lot with a very small cast and limited settings. It strikes me as a bit like watching a play.

There’s hefty helpings of The Good Crack, but the character work is solid. Like any good time travel story, it’s about illuminating the misconceptions and missed opportunities of the past, but with an added layer of going to extremes to avoid fixing them too much. Which introduces so many new ones at every turn. Suffering, thy name is Lan Sizhui.

Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen/Xue Yang
Vague modern AU. They were (increasingly upset about being) roommates. The kind of dubcon where the reader can infer more than the characters necessarily know about how into it everyone is. Is character driven porn a recognized thing? It should be. Violence and dangerously violent sex, but minimal blood and no gore. I think everyone even has all their original body parts. Song Lan POV.

Song Lan is desperately in love with Xiao Xingchen. Their relationship is steady and comfortable. He would never do anything to jeopardize it. Or he didn’t think he would. Xue Yang is going to ruin everything. Xue Yang does not have time for people who would die peacefully of old age surrounded by all their unacknowledged problems if left to their own devices, so he has decided to be horrible to Song Lan about it and steal his leftovers.

Xue Yang will not stop from saying awful things. Song Lan doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing, besides beating someone significantly smaller and weaker than he is. That part is inescapable. He’s horrified at himself, but not enough to stop him from doing it again. He is definitely not expecting it to lead to a threesome with the object of their mutual obsession, but neither is anyone else.

The no-powers AU really sells the danger of a large, strong man giving into his worst impulses to fight back physically when he’s outmatched verbally. License is taken regarding the seriousness of head and neck trauma. Don’t expect medical accuracy. Trying to do a domestic violence and accidentally S&M instead.

These people are very, very bad at communication. They saw a commercial for communication once and decided not to ask their doctor because it didn’t sound right for them. What they lack in consent they make up for in enthusiasm, which wouldn’t fly in real life but makes for interesting fiction. Song Lan is a very cool point of view character here because he’s good at reading facial expressions. Even when he doesn’t have enough information to exactly know what to make of them, he’s paying close attention.

 

Recent IASIP MacDennis I read, as requested by @Acey and @Deresto
here's my IASIP bookmarks in general if people are so inclined, but I cannot speak for the older iasip fanfics that i've read. it has been a while, and I do not remember.

Now, on to the specifics. The authors of these fics generally have p thorough tag warnings, and in general they fall under whatever bullshit IASIP pulls, so there's that. I suggest you read the author's comments for further information. I don't think there's any of the race jokes IASIP has (which I generally find unwatchable). As for mental illness portrayals, I find it readable, but ymmv
I think Frank appears the least in these fics, while Charlie and Dee are side characters to varying degrees of presence. There's a lot of codependency in these fanfics, which I find appealing especially in the context of MacDennis. Most of these are either post s14, or post s13.
I dunno if I have personal comments about the sex scenes of these fics, those kinds of scenes matter the least to me. If they're important to the story I can vibe, but sometimes I skim or skip these if they get too long.

This one blew me away, It's pretty phenomenal I think. It's a Dennis POV fic, the writing is pretty rambly, trying to get into Dennis' thoughts and such. The dialogue itself I find pretty fond, canon typical, but with like an air of caring about it. It deals with coming to terms about your sexuality, at 44

This one's a multi chapter, extremely good fic. Dennis pov, and I think a prominent part of the fic is Dennis' lack of self worth and more Dennis mind stuff. This fandom loves this bitch. It's p soft for IASIP. There's arguing and fighting! It's p good, Dennis being unsure. There's a dog. Mac asserting himself. Gay Mac rules.

Im not really a supernatural binch but I saw this series reccd on tumblr and I Love it. I started reading it Tuesday afternoon (unwisely bc i was at work) and finished the whole thing uhh Thursday afternoon

Diverges from canon at some point that i'm not aware of, i like the direction it goes, bringing together a bunch of characters who i assume dont get along as well in canon. Lots of good OCs i think.

A couple stories contain bits of RPF via dimension-hopping/illusion(?) that I skipped over

Destiel and uh Sabriel if thats the ship name (sam/gabriel) plus castiel/michael which will make sense later

One shot, complete. Jiang Cheng pov. Post-canon. Explicit sex. Serious injury but nothing permanent or graphic. Fuck or die, though both parties explicitly consent.

Jiang Cheng is badly injured and poisoned on a night hunt. He’s dying, and normal methods are not gonna be able to save him. Wei Wuxian has a brilliant plan. It involves sex of course. Specifically orgasm. This is a problem because Jiang Cheng suffers from pretty severe dysorgasmia as well as anorgasmia. He can and does enjoy sex, but orgasm requires absolutely ridiculous amounts of physical effort over repetitive-stress-injury lengths of time and is excruciatingly painful anyway. He certainly isn’t in any shape to attempt it by himself with the severity of his injuries. And now he’s in the mortifying position of explaining this to Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.

I don’t usually spend any time at all thinking about whether a particular version of the good old fuck or die trope is set up in a way that works well for a character, but this one really is. This is so much of Jiang Cheng’s canonical trauma plus major story-specific sore spots revisited all at the same time. Wei Wuxian being unable to let him go, making choices about saving his life without his permission and even putting his own life in danger. Being in pain, physically helpless, and unable to use his core. Having to discuss his sex life, which to him is defined largely by feelings of shame and inadequacy, with his brother, Lan Wangji, and Wen Ning, who are having silent conversations amongst themselves via significant looks he can’t read because he isn’t one of them. This is extremely humiliating.

If only there were someone with incredible strength and effectively infinite stamina. Someone with knowledge of human anatomy acquired from medical training and experience assisting a brilliant physician. Preferably someone who happens to be nearby, since time is of the essence. That sure would be useful. While everyone else catches up, Wen Ning is politely breaking into the conversation to confirm that this is an actual medical condition as he prevents Jiang Cheng from injuring himself worse by attempting things like kicking Wei Wuxian with his bad leg. Wen Ning is completely prepared to have this under control. Jiang Cheng is surprised to find he’s pretty okay with that actually.

I particularly appreciate how this story handles sex with physical disability. In addition to his own variety of sexual dysfunction, requiring talismans which he doesn’t have at the moment to achieve erection, Wen Ning has significant loss of mobility in his hands. The latter is a major problem with a partner who is wearing many layers, understandably doesn’t want to be found with his clothes torn from his body in case he dies after all, and can’t move or be moved much due to pain and injury. The former is not a problem. At all. Despite the unavoidable awkwardness of the situation, Wen Ning has such a different mindset about sex that it’s really throwing Jiang Cheng for a loop. It’s a good loop.

 

so i've somehow ended up watching naruto again, and i have a deep need for fanfic focusing on the non-team 7 konoha kids. something plotty or at least with some world building would be ideal, but i'm looking for basically anything.

i already read the akatsuki!kiba fic mentioned in this threat and it's a+, but it only made me want to read more lol.
