Bought myself some rocks, and won a stop sign at the towns 4th of July celebration. Then ate a lot more than I should have whoops. There was a pretty fun magic show too! Any Americans here who did anything fun today?

 

Was sat on by a dog vibrating with Deep Concern at firework noises for quite some time.

 

I was watching Anthony Bourdain’s show parts unknown, and in the episode he compares Putin to trump. The episode first aired in may of 2014. 2 years before the election. Did he remember the comparison he made after the election and the trump/Russia stuff starting coming out? It’s just weird to think about.

 

I am newly in England, so I had a friend wish me 'happy treachery day' for 4th of July and commiserated with the only other american in the company.

I finally saw Ocean's 8 and while I will complain about a couple of plot points, because I always do, I overall loved it. just. I already liked Ocean's tril well enough (lover of heist movies in general), but this went WOOP.

also I am so so gay for Cate Blanchett oh god

 

It was so great! I love heist movies, and this one having women at the forefront is just amazing

 

I have a vague recollection of a thread about amusing combinations of products to purchase together. Today I bought Drano and hot sauce.

Fun fact about me: every time I go shopping with my grandma, we eventually end up on the candle isle and spend about 15-20 minutes sniffing them and usually buy none of them.

 

Are any of y'all in academia?

I read a paper with an interesting method for cleaning paper, couldn't find any other papers giving more detail, so I sent the author a question about the technique. But now I am full of Doubt and wondering if that sort of thing is annoying if you don't have a previous relationship with the author.

 

honestly from all I have ever heard, it's p much standard and most academic authors are delighted if people show an interest in their work. Might take a while if they're swamped with other stuff but I don't think it's annoying or awkward
