I really wanna sing "Frondly Warning" (slightly modified for human terminology) at an anti-Trump protest.

I have a frittata recipe I want to make, but I should have a shower. But I don't want to shower, because I want to cook.

So instead of doing either I'm sitting around on the internet.

My old bike broke, stopped shifting completely and the parts would have cost more than the bike was worth... So i got a new one, with some help from my parents.

    I now owe them $215 :(

I'm 19 and I still have absolutely no idea what "big dick energy" is supposed to be.

Maybe two or three years ago I hung out with a bunch of people including my friend’s youngest brother and his friend, who were high school seniors or somesuch at the time. Brother’s friend was the most refreshing Example Of Today’s Youth. He could converse on complex social topics like intersectionality with total ease and open acceptance.

He... listened to women, about experiences with misogyny, without taking it as a personal attack or making it about himself, in any way? He had intelligent, informed things to say, but mostly listened, occasionally expressing sympathy and appropriate concern without any reflexive defensiveness. It’s usually harder to talk to men of my own generation about this, I’ve found. Certainly not always, of course, but different baggage from a different time.

The guy was probably 17 years old or thereabouts. He certainly didn’t have it all figured out. But it gave me so much hope.

I have no idea what big dick energy is either.

When I was a teen I felt out of touch with "the youth" and I was ok with that. Now I feel vaguely unsettled by it, and I think that's the real sign that I am no longer An Youth.

The only reason I know anything about The Youth (I'm 25) is that most of my younger sisters are firmly gen z so I hear them talk about shit all the time, tbh.

Fun fact about me: I used to think the hug emoji (in spoiler) was an excited flappy hands emoji. I was fairly upset to learn the truth, because to me hugging people with no warning or permission is a big trigger.

I think Theatre Is Evil is probably my favorite Amanda Palmer album, and that’s including The Dresden Dolls. It’s just...really fuckin’ good, guys. I gave it a relisten today and I’m so glad I did. <3

Oh myyyyy, what a pleasing medium. Just look at that contrast in the example image. (I don't know whether it's been digitally enhanced, but it's very nice.)

    By Jean-Baptiste Sabatier-Blot (1801-1881) - [1], Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3112794

I don't know why I chose the full-sized version. It took forever to render because it's python, I wrote the histogram drawing function(s) myself, and my code could probably stand to be optimized a lot. But eh, here it is:
This is literally just a bar graph of how many pixels there are with each value, from pixels with a value of 0 (black) on the far left to pixels with a value of 255 (most intense red, green, or blue) on the far right. (The x and y axes are not using the same scale because the image would be hilariously, uselessly tall. The bar heights are fractional and not logarithmic or anything though, so they're proportionally accurate with respect to each other.)

The histogram is color instead of monochrome because, probably due to slight imperfections as well as aging of the material, it's not a monochrome image. I didn't want to tamper with it further than digitization inevitably already has before I analyzed it. (Yellow in the histogram represents an overlap of just red and green. Cyan is an overlap of green and blue. Red and blue is magenta. White is an overlap of all three colors, which is most of the image. It's nearly grayscale, just not quite.)

The abnormally tall bar on the extreme right is gonna be mostly due to the white border around the image and can safely be ignored.

So now that that's out of the way: Just look at how the image utilizes the value range. Nothing seems particularly neglected, but the peaks are falling low and high with a bit of a trough in the middle, which is somewhat unusual. Just from casual observation of the various examples in the article, it seems like in general, the medium is good at dark and light values, and less good at midrange. Which creates incredible contrast but will probably wash out finer details.

    How cool is that?!

Aaaahh!! I love daguerreotypes! If you can see if you can see one irl- since they're silver plate the lights are reflective and they're truly gorgeous! I don't think the one you posted is really altered, maybe a biiit? but since they are silver, irl the light shifts on them a bit so it's hard to tell in a digital version.

Once photography started taking off, tintypes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintype were the poor man's version and so are much more common but have that similar, reflective and high detail style

an antique store near my parents' house has some tiny tintypes and the like (i thiiink there's a legit daguerreotype or two in there too? but I can't remember for sure) and i waaant them but they are rightly price above my price range

idk about all places but I saw some in person at art museums with photography sections! early photography is one of my fav bits of history i know a decent bit about
