The only place I see TVs is in inpatient care; the local doctor and dentist surgeries are places to sit on an uncomfortable chair and contemplate your own mortality in the ensuing discomfiting silence

    My psychiatrist, also.

Edit, because wow that's vague: hgtv is always on at my psychiatrist's.

my doctor's has the radio, i thiiink? i have the vague memory of hearing Noises there but i don't know if it was the radio, a CD/streaming thing, or my imagination. Certainly no tv.
my previous doctor's had jack shit and it's fun to contemplate your navel there if you're as vaguely hypochondriac as i can be let me tell you

My old family doctor's office had a tv but it just showed a slideshow of various services offered by their health network.

I need to share something that's happening in my life because it's baffling and I have no idea what's going on or why, and it's a bit concerning. It's also kind of confusing and I would think I was being pranked if this weren't so absurd.

So as a bit of background, I play a larp, and I make things for that larp sometimes. One of the things I tried to make was a fabric wall, a few years ago, then gave up on when it turned out trash and left the stuff in my storage room for like two years. A hundred dollars worth of PVC and a three foot tall stack of fabric sat there for a long time, gathering dust. This weekend i felt like tackling it again, from a slightly different approach. I looked up the old plans for it while i was out and got another $20 of pvc and some cheap fabric to try again, but better this time.

Old plan called for 4'x6' frames covered in gray fabric, held into the ground by rebar that we could never actually use, because it turns out that once you sink rebar into the ground it's nigh impossible to get back out, and we got in a little bit of trouble for it. New plan was 6'x6' frames covered in green fabric, held up by 4' long feet. I edged on the longer side when buying fabric, and I'm glad I did, because something has gone wrong.

My 6' lengths of pvc are all 7' long. The 4' ones are normal, exactly the same as when i got them cut at home depot two years ago. Home depot only sells pvc in lengths of 10' and 20', and i have it written down in the proposal asking for money for this project that we were buying 6 20' lengths. All over the document are plans for 6x4 stuff, mathed out how much fabric we need, how much dye we needed for the fabric, thread estimates, all with those measurements.

And I made a prototype with those measurements. It didn't really work because we have a couple players over 6 feet tall and it looks really pathetic when your wall is shorter than your wizard. I vividly remember one of them peeking over the top to cast spells. That was why the project was benched for so long.

And now the pvc is seven feet long. I've measured it six times. I've measured every single piece. I'm so confused.

Question: if my main character is a thirteen-year-old is the book automatically classed as YA, and if not, what's the difference? If I wanted to write for an adult audience with a kid character, what would I have to do differently? I'm debating because if it wasn't YA I'd more easily avoid the worst of the Tumblr crowd.

i think whether or not it’s YA mostly depends on the topics addressed and the writing style, and a thirteen year old protag is a little young for classic YA anyway; you’d more likely see that in middle-grade fiction. for example, scout is under ten throughout to kill a mockingbird, but that story is very much not intended for children, especially not children that young.
goodreads has a list of adult fiction with a child protagonist, maybe that will help.

i would recommend doing some research outside of kintsugi. there’s a wealth of articles describing what makes something YA vs adult fiction. at any rate, if your story works best as a YA novel, altering it before you’ve even written it, let alone found a publisher, to avoid potential drama from hypothetical readers doesn’t seem to be a sound strategy.

Okay, that's useful. Thanks! I was just vaguely considering the idea, not making plans yet.

I found this really neat video about vr headsets and what implications it brings for the future, and strives for a definition on what vr means today. Its also a fun experiment to see what wearing a vr headset for a week would be like:

Its very long for a youtube video but is definitely worth the time imo

P.S. since i forgot about it, the shot used to portray the video is complete clickbait, so dont worry about this dude suffering in a corner, theres nothing like that in the video
