Y'really can't beat animation as far as marrying abstraction to style, and it's a bit sad that a lot of people don't realise that heavily CGI'ed live-action is already more animation than it is live-action. Maybe animation would be more widely appreciated if they did.

Animation is genuinely my favorite art form and I love it.

Speaking of animated music videos, here's a REALLY bitchin' one. It's some of the coolest pixel animation I've ever seen! (And the song absolutely slaps.)

yes of course it's tmbg what do y'all expect from me at this point

It’s rained for like a month straight and I found a couple fairy rings at the park yesterday. Took some pictures, shared them around, and the number of people telling me to stick my head in one is Wild.

*stumbles back in after, like, more than a year away* my therapy task last month was to reconnect with someone or something old and i thought i should get back to kintsugi because kintsugi is cool (the task is a subtask of "how to be a social human being" which i have been notably improving at)

gotta lotta catchup to do on my old favourite threads :D

edit: well, i coulda done that, but instead i reread the entire homustuk hentai school thread again because it's my most favourite. also now i know what the t-posing shadow in pesterquest was reminding me of.

I got back into Holes again and it occurs to me that Zero and his mother had even worse luck than the Yelnatses - what the hell did THEY do to get cursed?

I found the sequel to Holes, and I'm enjoying it a lot! Too bad it's not as well-known. (X-Ray apparently learned nothing from Green Lake and is embarking on a new career as a ticket scalper, while Armpit's dragged along for the ride.)

Not sure what to make of this??? It feels almost like robots attempting to socialize but also is built like something you'd see on hgtv. Adult swim is weird

Does anyone else like to just drive around for the sake of it? Take a back road or two? I feel like it's been phased out or something. Hopefully I'm wrong?

I would if I could drive. When I was a kid it was the only way to get me to reliably fall asleep. I still tend to feel relaxed in a car. Of course, that's why I can't drive; I automatically get sleepy.

Sometimes, yes! It’s the only way I got comfortable driving on the highway.

I’m quite happy to hear someone talk about it in terms of taking back the roads. I have to walk a road to really claim it myself, but driving is a different liminal activity and also good.

I do it all the time, partly out of restlessness but also just like, hey lets go to the park 25 minutes away

I would often take as indirect of a route as possible back to my parents' from my friends house when i was in late high school/early college because it just felt nice to drive through the really empty night roads... honestly, now that i'm about to move back to the states and get my own car i'm sorta excited to drive again.. it's been a while

Does anyone know where specification!Character Name originated? It’s difficult to search for.

I’ve heard the theory that it has to do with negations in programming, which makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. !Character would just mean “not Character” in a true or false sense, rather than Character but some variation. There’s no point in describing something you just declared as not existing. If Character equals false, their particulars seem entirely moot. I can’t imagine this evolving in any remotely natural way from any of the languages I’ve seen cited.

I did see someone suggest a jump path in email days of yore. Naturally, I can’t find the suggestion for the life of me, but it seems slightly more plausible? I never experienced the days of jump paths so I have no idea if the actual usage really matched up in a natural way. WestSatelliteCampus!Karen might make sense, but a long list of intermediate servers kinda doesn’t. And I’m not sure even the short version continues to make sense if you think of it as including Karen’s whole email address. The path to the email server should not create variations on Karen. Probably. I’m a little unclear on the details of the protocol.

I dunno, I saw it first in anime fandoms and wondered if it was an interesting linguistic import, but that has more to do with what fandoms I saw first than where the usage came from first.

on driving: Once in a while, man, yeah, I just want to for a drive and go through unfamiliar roads before looping back home, possibly pausing to eat out along the way.

on fandom bangs for specifying versions: Everything I've seen and heard from Old Fandom has told me yes, it originates from the bangs of email paths in days of yore. It was part of the typical communications of the day, and people emulated it with the expectation that everyone familiar with it would understand what it was communicating, and that trickled to fandom through to the present day.

Ah neat, thank you! The best part to me is that it worked. The original context is gone, but the meaning persists.

I'll occasionally go for a motorcycle ride just for the fun of it. Not in the car though; I've done enough driving for a lifetime.
