Fishin' in the stream of consciousness (all-purpose, no topic chat thread)

I've created a Lasers and Feelings hack for Avatar the Last Airbender where your two skill nouns are elements (bending) (or you can use like a sword or something, I'm not your dad) and... right now I'm calling it diplomacy, but it's basically a catch-all charisma roll. The game is called Elements of Diplomacy because that's the Lasers and Feelings naming convention, but I've been considering changing it to Elements of Friendship and your other roll being your friendship stat.

Does that sound more reasonable for the Atla universe? Does it imply that you have to be friends or make friends with the people you're using that roll on? Because my players used it to wreck a home, stop a riot, start a different riot, and cause a small marxist revolution in Ba Sing Se, none of which are strictly "friendship" qualities.

Is anyone here any good at identifying plants? I have a plant in my garden box that I didn’t put there.

Spoiler: The bitch in question

Green stems, green leaves. Two leaves per level directly across from each other, then the next two up will be a quarter turn around the stem, so it makes neat little square stacks. Flower buds are pale yellow-green, and flowers are going to be purple when they bloom. I’ll likely have a picture of one tomorrow.

It’s not mint (doesn’t smell minty when crushed) and probably not weed (doesn’t smell dank either). I can have some better pictures for you tomorrow if needed.

It most likely fell down as a seed from my upstairs neighbors‘ garden box. I fertilize regularly and water daily, so things really take off fast on my porch.

 

It might be trailing lantana? It's related to mint but doesn't smell like it.

 

My dad keeps asking me what state is good to move to. We've been in this apartment less than a year, but I hate where I'm living now and I would like to move. After talking to my coworkers, and many google searches about weather and affordability later, I've decided Illinois or Colorado would be nice states to live in. Anyone here live in Illinois or Colorado?

I feel your penpalling woes, it's hard to invest in sometimes but the outcome can be very heartwarming and it's dang fun as heck

Thinking; the pop culture (deer-skull-headed thing) wendigo is sufficiently different from the traditional (personification of cannibalism, no set appearance, taboo to discuss) wendigo that I think the former could be used without being disrespectful to the latter if it was called something different. Thing is, what? "Forest spirit" is too vague, and someone suggested "Jersey Devil" but it's even less like the traditional Jersey Devil than it is the traditional wendigo (wrong part of the country, for one thing).

 

Leshy/Leshen? Like those from witcher tree look very similar to that description

 

Cervicephalos taking after cervitaur? Or if you want a slightly more correct word, elaficephalos.

 

Runs into the same "very wrong location" aspect as the Jersey Devil, I'd think, since leshiy/леший is a Slavic forest spirit/deity (the witcher pulls heavily from central European mythology)

 

Is there any particular reason this isn't a problem that could be solved by making up a nonsense word? There's a short story covered in the Tor Lovecraft Reread (which ran out of Lovecraft ages ago and now does weird fiction in general) that was covering some very pop-culture-wendigo-adjacent ground that called its Freaky Ravenous Monster That Lives In The Woods And Eats Errant Hikers "the Antripuu" and it worked fine.

 

Yeah, I was thinking, wrong language. I wish I spoke any Algonquin dialects so I could use something from them. Or knew anything about any Native American tribes other than they exist, really. I have something of an excuse in that I don't live on the same continent.

 

struck by the 2 AM impulse to start a listserv for my apartment building. I am so terribly suited to running one of those, have never done anything like it before, probably could not persuade people to join through the medium of a note taped to the front door. but. wanna.

it could be cool! people have been doing stuff like leaving food donations in a box at the front, so I know at least some of the people living here are community minded. it could be a thing! I’m just worried I would immediately collapse under the pressure of having no clue how to facilitate a communication medium or organize mutual aid!

maybe I should finally join my local socialists

 

honestly our apartment isn’t particularly suited to community and i guess i understand why given the demographic. but the city nearby totally is and i’ve even seen mutual aid facebook groups take off. so idk! could work
