Writing some self indulgent fic and oh boy. I have nothing but respect for people who are able to write romance, look over it, and say, "Yes, this is something I want to share with the world."

Something something the mortifying ordeal of being known.

Looked up a bunch of old CBBC shows to inform friends, and was reminded of the Uncanny Valley level of Bodger and Badger. Seriously, upper jaws should not do that.

It's weird puppet movement sure but I don't think I'd call it uncanny valley, since that refers specifically to things trying to look realistically human but failing because they're Not Quite Right. And I don't think anyone in their right mind would think Badger was anything other than the weird-ass puppet he is.

True, that was probably the wrong term. Just plain "creepy", then.

Description of Tyra Banks' book which is supposed to be an objection to it:
That sounds exactly like something I'd love to read or write. I can see why it would be hard to market though. Grimdark whimsy ought to be a thing more often.

This is about Modelland, right? It's actually, uh, pretty bad at the tonal jumps. And it wasn't 'hard to market' - America's Next Top Model did theme episodes on it, it was at the height of Banks' popularity as I recall. It comes off more as someone who knows suicide and body image issues are a problem, but has never actually encountered anyone who has even known a person going through that.

By "hard to market", I mean as in "write to market" - as in, finding an audience it's actually aimed at, other than the writer's id. If it's bad at tonal jumps, that just makes me want to read it more for ridiculousness factor, but I see what you mean.

From all I’ve heard, Modelland is an absolute trainwreck all around—which is honestly unsurprising to me given my admittedly limited knowledge of Tyra Banks and ANTM, but it’s also sort of a shame because some of the ideas sound like they could be really intriguing if executed well.

That being said, it’s also very much on my to-read list, and I’m not convinced it would be if I hadn’t heard pretty universally baffled assessments of it, so…maybe that was the plan all along?

we don't have a POTC thread but damn those are some good movies. just rewatched the first one for the first time in years and I forgot how good it is - and how good of a ship Jack/Elizabeth/Will is! (that's a lie, I didn't forget, it just impressed me all over again lol) the three of them fit like puzzle pieces from the moment they meet, even when that first meeting is them trying to kill each other. talk about your soulmates trope.

also read a tumblr post today about how everyone Elizabeth kisses dies soon after, but it didn't go into detail about the first part of the movie, and the ties that are established there between Elizabeth and death. in her very first appearance, she rescues the son of a cursed immortal from the jaws of death, and steals the cursed item that grants that immortality from him. then, eight years later, she nearly drowns while wearing it, just like he did - and when she was in the water dying, something powerful happened to the medallion. maybe at the moment that would have been her death. and then Jack is the one who rescues her, tying him into all this...

Hrgh its just coz NFTs are basically a base with accessories and Homestuck sprites are just a base with accessories but things like free use art bases exist, customizeable pets from pet websites, and dollmakers exist before NFTs.

Its just that most NFTs are stolen clip art, traced art from prexisting things, bases with accessories that don't compliment each other, low effort shit! Plus you usually can't customize them urself

Theyre giving customizeable bases a bad name, and they did not originate the concept
