I learned to read music.... Really early. I want to say when I was 7 to 9? But my mom was a music teacher so it was sorta a given that I would learn it.

Everett local rats so small, so tiny

I hated how far above the staff the notes got for flute? Like, if there are more than 4 lines above then i have to count them because for some reason my brain clumps them together

Also i played cello for 2 semesters and it was a good. Hug a lorge bassy viola (except the A string sounded annoying)

ledger lines are literally the worst, except for horn it's like...why did you not just write this in bass clef?????

Somehow reading notes just doesn't click in my brain for me. I tried learning when I was younger but I just suck at it. Which was not helpful for when I very briefly was in a pop-choir.

I enjoy singing (which is my only instrument :P) but I hardly ever sing a song the same way twice :P

same hat man. or damn close. my parents put me in music classes at age ... 3? 4? maybe 4. in any case i don't really remember not being able to read music. it's nice for me, i guess, but trying to teach anyone else gets confusing for me bc there's like this block of "doesn't everyone know this?" no, Kay. you're weird.

(people ask me why i went into music. sometimes, if it's the right crowd, i say with a wink that i was doomed to it. sometimes it kinda feels that way though...)

UGH SAME HAT LITERALLY THIS TIME. i can do 3 ledger lines up/down just fine in treble clef, 2 up/down in bass clef. any more and my brain's like "nope you better count those suckers"

    GOOD LORD YES
THE STUPID FUCKING VIOLA GETS A STUPID FUCKING CLEF NOBODY NEEDED, GIVE THE FLUTES OUR OWN CLEF
honestly, I tend to just go through and count the lines when not playing and write the note names in my music for everything above E above the staff (which is the most ledger lines i can consistently snap-recognize)

  14. I haven't played an instrument in a decade, and only did so because it was either that or choir class. I can't/won't sing, I sound like garbage.

swirlingflight inane analysis and story spinning is my passion

due to money reasons, my music options had been (1) this trumpet from one of my uncles, (2) this trombone from another of my uncles, and (3) singing. i opted for singing, in middle school. by high school i... think i dropped it? because finite space for electives and i went for extra visual art, ski team, and the very occasional theater thing instead.

from my experiences going to church, i never truly learned to sight read either. i can look at it and go "ahh, so it goes higher here and lower there," but i don't have the thing that tells me "so sing this note." always done my best to match the people around me. choir = practice, church singing = zerg rush

    Elaienar "sorta spooky"

Same. I remain baffled as to how people can see a note and know to make a noise that's the right pitch. I want to learn to read music but I'm really not sure how to aside from taking lessons (not currently an option).

I wonder if there are games for reading music like there are for learning hangul and katakana and hiragana? The ones where you can click a symbol and hear a recording of the correct sound, I mean, and work on matching sounds to symbols and vice versa. I'm gonna look around and see if I can find anything like that.

Edit: It seems there are many games and apps for this exact thing. Cool! Now to see if I can learn from them.

    Sethrial MacCoill Attempts were made

for me it was less matching the note to the sound and more matching the note to where I put my fingers and trusting that the sound would work itself out. I couldn't tell you what a G sounds like, but I can find it on an instrument and hit it with a mallet, and I know that it'll make the right noise.

Yeah - even as someone who sings for a job, I can honestly tell you that the majority of us can't look at a note and immediately sing the right pitch. You're not alone :) If I know a piece inside and out, I can sing it in key without being given a pitch (sometimes), but it's usually way more about learning where you fit with the people you're collaborating with. ...that feels like a poor way of explaining. :/ The honest answer to "how do you know what to sing?" is "when I start a piece, I don't. When I've learned a piece ... Muscle memory, listening to the ensemble, and trusting the process. And magic.". And there are STILL wrong notes.

I have more thoughts about learning to read music, but I don't have a lot of time to write them out right now - I'll come back to it :)
