how smart are coconut crabs about?

cause i'm thinking about coconut crab sporting and herding breeds

 

smart enough for my undying affections

probably about as smart as any other breed of crab, meaning that they can find their way around obstructions pretty well but won't let go of a burning stick even when it starts to burn them.

well wed selectively breed the smart ones until they become dog smart then!!!

 

I mean, maybe, but there are only so many raw materials to work with there. wolves are already pretty smart, and really intelligent dogs are only a little smarter than that. If we started domesticating crabs about the same time we did dogs, by now we would have super intelligent crabs that might be able to outsmart a particularly dumb pug.

isn't there an upper limit on how smart invertebrates can get, like as a function of how their nervous system works? they don't have much of a central nervous system so iirc all the peripheral ganglion they'd need swould crowd their organs

 

Clearly the solution is larger crabs.
