For more queer history, this site seems to be pretty much dead (though what's there is quite good), but the links page is extensive and there's a lot of cool-lookin' stuff there.
Even over the last ten-fifteen years, in fandom spaces! I remember reading Silmarillion fanfic from around 2003 and I happened to get a chance to ask the author questions about a character's sexual orientation. She told me that back then writing canon characters as queer was touchy stuff. These days in the Silm fandom, if you're not writing an emotionally restrained character study of Sauron you're writing incestuous slash featuring your fave from the House of Feanor. Or Angbang. That's Sauron/Morgoth.
Maedhros/Fingon OTP, yo. ETA: Although if you go on ff.net you will still find plenty of oldschool homophobia. Do not go on ff.net.
I basically have Finrod as a shipping bicycle, because he is a chill broski (for a Noldorin prince, which, low bar) and basically everyone likes him. The Oldest Sons Trio (Finrod/Fingon/Maedhros) is a solid one. I'm also always here for stuff examining the perspectives of the less-chill Feanorians like Caranthir and Curufin. Ooh, and Maeglin.
I'm mostly stopping in because I came here the backwards way. I have always shipped for the characters' chemistry (and some pair the spares crackships) I didn't have a problem with Yaoi and Slashfic but I wasn't into it, because tiny fangirl Kiyara's brain was like "what's the point of gay ships where the guys wouldn't like me?" I had read a /lot/ of mainstream romance novels and I still have an unhealthy amount of attachment to the heteronormative romance=sex marriage babies relationship escalator so most of my ships were M/F (which I might need to make another thread for those because that's a wild battleground itself) I think Destiel was my first slash ship and started after I began to have not-cis genderfeels. I project /heavily/ on Dean and HC he's a closeted bisexual because that is a struggle I know and the creators basing Dean off the character from On The Road and Cas on Constantine it should be literally illegal for them to keep up the queer baiting this long. Stanchez was the next one and my first experience of "this was supposed to be a joke how did it end up like this" feels and SportaRobbie followed after (it's the most wholesome of ships). I had dug a little through the Kylux trashbin in the past, mostly for the aesthetic and hatefucking, but recently I moved in because I have so many emotions wrt their fucked up everything resonating with my fucked up Ness. Anyway idk if this is quality content for this thread, but I just figured I'd comment on the amusing aspect that I have only recently been lumped into the "all m/m shippers are fetishising gay men" discourse when it's still pretty novel for me personally. That's not to say there aren't very real problems in fandom, but I'm admittedly less concerned about "cishet women" writing emotional porn than the fact mainstream Lesbian porn exists for cis male consumption and can much more directly lead to real violence.
