me: ugh, I should really get off the couch and start getting ready for work, I’m almost late

my cat: comfortable lap you’ve got there, shame if someone sat in it and started purring and resting their face gently against your hand

Tragic story: I saw the train station cat... But she did not want to come say hi. Also she was sitting in front of a glass apartment door and there were two black cats on the other side. Friends... Or mortal enemies

When teaching my friend’s little sister how to interact with the cats, her parents used to make gentle petting motions while saying, “soft, soft”. For a brief, glorious time she believed this activity was called softing the cat.

I gave the cat some wet food earlier but she didn’t eat it. Now she has picked a chunk of it up, carried it into another room, and carefully put it down so that it’s sitting on a carpet and touching two different computer charging cords, and now she can eat it. But of course not all of it because then there would be nothing for me to have to come clean up

I learned something fascinating about Dwarf Fortress today
    • Dwarves don't adopt cats, cats adopt dwarves who have a preference for cats
    • Some dwarves like cats for their aloofness
    • Cats will bring dwarves the vermin that they've killed
    • They seem to be curious and will wander around every room

Bonus: Multiple cats can adopt a single dwarf, which since they target the subsection of dwarves that especially like cats makes it both possible and likely to have a dwarf running around with like 10+ pet cats.

Which is one reason players develop Cat Population Management Strategies so they don't suffer from what's colloquially known as a Catsplosion and have their framerate nosedive. :::PPP (Shoving all the male cats into a cage and only letting one out if you need more cats is one of the more... humane popular strategies, for instance.)
