Is it normal to want to eat my cat? Not as a serious, realistic thing, just the unbidden feeling that it would be a good idea.

So I think it's the same thing as when people say to small children "Oh, you're so cute, I could just gobble you up!" I always thought that was a weird thing to say. It still is weird, I guess, but it's the desire that's weird, not expressing it. If that is what's happening. I have never felt this way about a child.

I look at my cat and my heart swells with love and a little voice in the back of my head tells me I could just cronch her up like a easter egg. This is very silly and not true.

 

I’ve definitely heard of that as an intrusive thought that people can have. It’s not something they would ever actually do, it’s just something that pops into their head sometimes. The experience of intrusive thoughts generally varies from emotionally benign absurdity to extremely morally upsetting depending on person and state of mind. Sometimes it helps a little to know that it’s just your brain yelling whatever nonsense it thinks will get a reaction.

 

If it helps sometimes I like mouth my cats ears and paws which I know is unhygienic but dammit they're such cute little gremlins and they do the same to me

 

it's definitely A Thing to look at something that's just so cute that it prompts a paradoxical reaction... the whole "what the FUCK this is too adorable" pseudo-anger thing that some people get is part of that, and probably "i could literally eat you up" comes from that same place. i read it explained as your brain gets so overwhelmed with THE CUTE that it has to throw something else in there to balance it out.
