The unhappy Soleil twin with the happy mask is a Breath hero, the aspect of freedom. Is their arc to do with breaking away from their twin?
their twin's aspect is Doom--I sort of wonder if they have something to do with the rebellion, because Breath is freedom (not necessarily from bonds with others) and movement and Doom is restriction and fate. put together, could be something to do with wanting the rebellion to succeed/helping the rebellion? 'liberty'/freedom from what is basically tyranny, moving forward, while also having to deal with the restrictions of like, everything that keeps the system in place and working under the radar....and then maybe 'fate' to point to the rebellion being doomed. plus I'm not sure we're going to get 'arcs' for the Troll Call trolls. probably just....they're there.
Well, full arcs, probably not, but... I don't know, I was just wondering if that would be a thing in the story, even if it was just a hint. Wanna take bets on the as-yet-unrevealed trolls' signs? Spoiler: leaks Squinting really hard at Lanque makes me pretty sure she's a Virsci. Same process with Groupie and I'm guessing Sagimino, though might also be Sagilo, Sagirist, or Saginius. Scrubber's sign's totally obscured, random guess based on horn shape could be Arga.
What's with the un-reveal of Elwurd's first name? I poked through her tag to see if anyone else was wondering, and there's a theory going round that it's a codename and she's another Tetrarch. On this side of the fourth wall the reference in her name is obvious, but some people are wondering if in-universe she might have chosen it to mean "lowblood". Interesting thought. Speaking of, is Dammek his first or last name? Since he pairs it with the title, I'm guessing it's his second name, if it isn't a single codename. The girls are all awesome so far but I'm not finding the boy trolls very appealing, except for Diemen who looks to be about five years old. Hope the yaoi fans get thrown a bone too.
Xefros says rustbloods are obliged to be poor but his home is nicer than mine. I guess I don't have the option of looting my belongings from dead neighbours like trolls probably do.
oh my god please let Elwurd be a Tetrarch. also I think that's a really good point--we don't actually know Dammek's full name, but also, 'Tetrarch' titles are usually followed up with LAST names, right? which would suggest that we don't know his first name yet either.... also yeah I mean. trolls are also allowed to build their own homes once they get a lusus, and....I feel like 'you get a house! and you get a house!' is already a better standard than capitalism. Alternia sucks in OTHER ways. housing availability and style is apparently not one of them. I wouldn't think that stealing from your dead rust neighbors would get you much, though, and it seems like the implication for Xefros was that most of the people around him were rust too? still, it's not like it's impossible to accumulate gifts from highbloods, or even your moirail who's one level up on the hemospectrum and possibly slightly richer than you, or maybe all Alternian things are just nicer than poor capitalist's things.
I don't think we know enough to say whether Tetrarch is a title usually followed by last names! We haven't met anyone except Dammek, and I'm still not sure that it's not him giving himself a title because he's a self-important teenager.
I meant to say 'titles like Tetrarch', but fucked up and didn't fix it--but my point was more "Tetrarch" is a title that exists in our world and means 'one of four joint rulers' or 'ruler of four divisions/things', and titles like that are usually followed by a last name (at least for Americans, which is what most of the people making this are and would be familiar with). i.e., President, Governor, Senator, General, other militaristic titles, even Empress or Emperor at times. so I'm inclined to suspect that as a command title, this is probably going to work in a similar fashion. plus, Dammek IS part of the rebellion, and him giving himself a title probably means something for that.
I mean I'm still not convinced there IS much of a rebellion, and that Dammek isn't just a leader of one with a couple friends who don't realize how serious he is about it. and for trolls, we still haven't seen any indication of what kids do - adults get titles, but Dammek is the only example we've had at all.
Humans tend to pair titles with surnames, not first names, but on the other hand it's weird that Xefros would call his boyfriend who he's known since infancy by his surname rather than his first name. Considering how panicky he is about remembering codes, he'd probably have let Dammek's first and/or real name drop at some point in his conversation with Joey... Tiny trolls are apparently better at architecture than tiny humans. Any thoughts on who the "she" who's their biggest fan Xefros referred to? I'm guessing either Elwurd or Tyzias.
Plus, I've always headcanoned that the Alternian kids get a stipend and a catalog they can order out of, with options varying by caste. Basically something that's equivalent to a tappy-game or - to go with something that might be familiar to Joey - Neopets; the cheap stuff isn't ugly or obviously busted, it's just...basic. It's good enough to do the job it was built for, but it isn't going to easily lend itself to any particular aesthetic either. Maybe some of the highbloods like squashy couches and particleboard tables (I know that I love the patchwork set from Animal Crossing, personally) but they're probably getting encouraged to show off their status a bit. "Pick an aesthetic and show it off", maybe some functionally-useless trophies or tokens for collecting sets of items. And if they get bored of a set...well, there's probably nothing discouraging them from dumping it out where some lowbloods can scavenge it.
and from what we see of hives in Homestuck, I think architecture-wise the farther up you are the more freedom. You see lots of cookie-cutter hives in Karkat's area, but Vriska's narration mentions she got carried away building her place and it's huge and winding and doesn't always make sense (see: her hoarding treasure in dead ends). The building drones probably have an allotted amount of resources per caste they can use on a hive and lowbloods get frustrated at trying to be creative with it so they go for Generic Hive Shapes 1-10. (Maybe hivestems like Sollux's are a trade-off; you can't design your own house and you have neighbors, but you can put those resource points towards other things, like bee servers.) (I have no idea what's up with cave trolls. Personal preference? Lack of give a shit? Nepeta just wanted to spend those resources on her first set of paints?)
Maybe her lusus already lived there so she just used a fraction of her build allotment to make it habitable to trolls.
charun (one of our two olive hiveswap trolls) also lives in a cave, so it may well be an oliveblood thing where they just aren’t given a build allotment
See, I always figured that Nepeta had a build allotment, but she really liked the idea of being a wild cave troll so she just didn't use it apart from getting some camping supplies.
seems bit odd for them to not be given something lower castes get. Of course could be a cultural thing where olivebloods just like caves.
yeah, i was thinking cultural thing/conditioning thing! like, if you want your olivebloods to be rough ‘n tumble, maybe making it so that all the ones who live are survivalists by necessity is how they accomplish that?
