So, the second step in my participation in any sci-fi fandom is usually an Imperial Radch AU. Spoiler: radchaai stuff Hera's already got serious Radchaai Ship AI vibes, which also works because an ancillary-crewed ship allows them to be running a Mercy without, you know, having to have more than four distinct people on the ship. ... Personhood and ancillaries is tricky but you know what I mean. No idea how it'd work in the plot, but I dearly desire cheerful-but-horrifying Cutter as a Presger translator. He's a lot sneakier than any of the translators we've met but, hey, we don't really know what their deal is anyway. And the Hephaestus (could it be named after a Radchaai god instead? Well, most of the ships are anyway, hah) discovering alien life could pose a danger of complicating the treaty with the Presger? (If I were Radchaai Eiffel I'd absolutely be terrified, lol.) Minkowski gets a promotion to Captain... Ooh, Lovelace has probably got a Seivarden-esque situation, yeah? The life suspension and long period of lost time are similar, anyway. I don't know, it's difficult to come up with directly-plot-mapping AUs because I don't know what the fuuuuck is going on in Wolf 359 in terms of the arc plot mystery. :P Gosh, though, just... Hera with ancillaries. :D So many new opportunities for weird glitches! And Minkowski keeps threatening to have Eiffel re-educated but he's she's (!! radch AUs) like, hah, you're going to have to wait until we're near anywhere civilized and also have a medic you trust farther than you can trust her also are we really out of god damn tea

This honestly really excellent post on Gabriel Urbina's tumblr is a great window into the construction of the characters, but it also gives us the phrase and I'm very happy. about that.
