Rose/Dave is such a good, fucked up ship. <3 (I have a harder time getting into Dave/Dirk, possibly because of the way there's usually Bro overtones on Dirk's end that aren't always addressed? I like this flavour of ship a bit fucked up, but Bro/Dave is an entirely different kind of fucked up than what I want.) John/Jade's a good too, but I don't see it very much. (Dirk/Roxy would be interesting! Although I think they might work best in pale than anything concupiscent.) ...Jade/Jane would be interesting. (I don't feel like Jane would go for John, simply because she grew up around Poppop Crocker's...likeness and is familiar enough with it that the Westermark effect might well be in play there.)

I think that most of the existing dave/bro and dave/dirk was written before the bit in the comic where dave talked about his childhood and ptsd. The nature of his abusive upbringing was vaguer and most people didn't think it was nearly as bad as it turned out to have been, and that was reflected in their fanfic. God I miss pancakestein.
Probably, but Dave/Bro and Dave/Dirk made me uncomfortable even back then, so I do think my discomfort comes from the fact that I'm here for two messed-up kids trying to cope and heal together, rather than parental/guardian abuse. And Dave/Dirk is too close to Dave/Bro for my brainweasels to see a significant difference. (I have read some good Dave/Dirk, and even some good-and-distressing Dave/Bro, but it's not one of those things I seek out.)
Yeah, that's one of the things with Homestuck, ships between kids from the same universe don't feel like incest to me. They grew up apart without an inkling that they were siblings. Ships between alpha/beta kids may have more of it, because of the echoes of parent/guardian relationships. I've got a fair number of skelebro fics bookmarked. Privately, partly since porn, partly since, while some are cute and only mildly codependent, some are not at all cute or mild. (Unrelated to current discussion but the thread's overall topic: I haaaaaaaate things that try to go ~oh they're not biologically related so it's not reaaaaaaaally incest~. Fuck you, creators of the Dexter tv show and however many anime and dating sims, yes it is. And that's okay, it's fucking fiction. Claiming that only biology makes incest, claiming growing up together doesn't, makes it creepy in an unfun way. What other things are they adding in without acknowledging??? Just admit they both make for incest and get on with it!!!)
Yeah, the alpha kids - I think Dirk and Roxy did know that they were siblings, but also had never seen each other growing up (and how the heck did either of them survive to get as old as they did, with no guardians - I can plausibly accept that Roxy got raised by carapaces, but wtf happened with Dirk? I still don't understand that) so Westermark didn't apply. Jane definitely didn't know she was related to Jake (and wouldn't have believed it anyways, most likely). Weirdly, Rose/Roxy doesn't give me the same discomfort as Dave/Dirk? I have no idea what's going on there. Possibly it's just that Rose and Roxy's guardians messed them up in very different ways from how Dave and Dirk got messed up; the Lalondes have more issues with substance abuse and possibly abandonment than the host of issues that the Striders have with codependence and trust and food security. I don't think either Rose ever really doubted that she'd have enough to eat; Roxy and Dirk probably didn't get enough to eat, but they grew up in a post-apoc world. Dave's shown as having to hide food in his room in order to keep it (and that limits him to stuff that won't go bad without refrigeration). Maybe it's that I get the feeling that Mom Lalonde was genuinely trying to be a good mom, if fumbling badly at it, while Bro...is deeply messed up and should not be allowed near children? idek.
Asriel/The Fallen Human is good for incest. Also Amaricest is the shit. And of course the fabled OT3 of Ana/Mercy/Pharah.
Bro/Dave I only came to really like after it came out just how abusive their home situation was and how impossibly fucked up Dave was by it. Lalondecest is good too. But Bro/Dave is better because I really get off on parental abuse based relationships. Which is why Ganth/Tori is the absolute fucking shit to me. Jame/Tori is obviously the best ship ever in all existence, Kencyrath or no. But Ganth abusing his son is just. The best. I have rambled about why elsewhere and people are probably sick of fucking hearing about it. BUT LET ME TELL YOU. IT IS GOOD SHIT OK.
What makes the Kencyrath one especially fascinating is this is a culture with a tradition of sibling marriages in the ruling line. The IDEAL is to have opposite-gender twins together, which is what they got in the disastrous past with Jamethiel Dream-weaver and her twin brother Gerridon, and what they're getting again if Tori and Jame, both the children of the Dream-weaver, ever get over their issues. Their own House is strongly in favor of it. Also, the Knorth house have a tradition that the ruling line ALWAYS marry someone else of the same House, thus keeping the bloodlines pure & breeding the royal talents.

Dirk and Roxy aren't siblings. Neither are Jane and Jake. The only thing the Scratch did was reverse the time period ("early" versus "late") that they arrived on Earth, so Dave/Rose/John/Jade appeared before them and served as elder family members despite still being Dirk/Roxy and Jane/Jake's genetic children.

Given that their fighting almost brought down a fucking college and their dancing was also magical I also have to wonder what the consequences of the twins fucking would be. Like what will happen. Will we cause a disaster that creates a whole new part of the world. Will we somehow fix a broken city. Is this how we will kill Gerridon. What will happen. Will anything happen. I mean maybe not but the precedent for something happening when they have sex if they have it is there.
