I gather it's something to do with brainwashing or lobotomizing "problem" mages so they'll be docile? And possibly not really people anymore?
@OnnaStik feel free to explain further, I was trying to figure out when to bring it up! Knowing about the Fade + dreams + magic + how tranquility works would probably be useful; I've been waiting for a codex entry on it.
@bluefox I ended up going with a different program than yours that I like better. It's called LoiLo Game Recorder. Also it's really weird that there's no "I'm a mage" option because if Hawke's not a mage, there's a "my sister's a mage" option
Calling it a magical lobotomy is probably closest. It removes any connection to the Fade- a Tranquil mage can no longer do magic, no longer experiences dreams, and no longer displays emotions of any kind. A lot of people in the setting act as if they're not really people anymore, but if you try saying that to Owain (a Tranquil NPC in Origins) he's about as insistent as it's possible to be without getting emotional that that isn't the case. Oh, and unlike even non-mages, they can safely work with lyrium, so enchantments are generally done by them or else by dwarves. In theory, it's completely illegal to do this to a mage who has already passed the Harrowing except at that mage's own request. In practice...
>I help all my fellow mages. That night! >Yes At least, nobody suspicious except our gang of three apostates (including an elven blood mage), the soon-to-be-Captain of the guard, and a well-known author. If I ever had a fondness for glowy-red aesthetic, Inquisition knocked it right out of me. Nice Andraste statue, though. Is it ever a good sign when someone stands facing away from you?
(He falls to the ground and starts shaking and.. smoking?) (Blue crackles around his hands like when you see lightning lighting up a whole cloud.) BWOOSH Oh joy, templars. I punch them in the snouts to establish my mage dominance. (^In a more typically emotional voice now.) >_?
>That's a good question. WTF JUST HAPPENED, Anders do you have something you'd like to tell the class Can non-mages be made Tranquil? It would be even less justifiable than for out-of-control mages, but still useful if anyone Tranquil can work with lyrium. Or if you want an emotionless army or something.
I'm laughing at "Anders do you have something you want to tell the class" >That's a good question. YOU CAN'T SHIFTY EYES YOUR WAY OUT OF THIS LINE OF QUESTIONING, MISTER >_?
I don't think anyone's ever seen any reason to try it. It might be that, since mages have more Fadiness to lose, it would just kill anyone else it was tried on, but who even knows. I think the supply of lyrium is more of a chokepoint than the supply of dwarves and Tranquil mages, though, so again, not much reason to test the theory. (I have a lot of feelings about Owain and Tranquility in general, srsly, ask me about my voluntarily-Tranquil OC some time)
hmmm, so i'm guessing whatever the fuck Anders just pulled is a Grey Warden thing. I wonder if you could get Wardenhood to reverse Tranquility? Seems to be a moderately convenient cure for a lotta shit. #hasn't played any of the games
