OK QUESTION
Humanoid but dark beings with great power. There's three kinds- one that is very physically powerful but almost mindless violent/"thirsty"; one that is basically just a step up from "normal" humans in power but sort of vulnerable to control; and one that is "higher"/more powerful magically and able to control others but fairly weak/has a large weakness on their own. You can be born as one or made into one- unsure yet if all those born are the higher ones or if u can be born as any of the three but higher ones are almost all born into it. Should they be demons or vampires?

 

i vote demons just because vampire would be more the more classic answer and variety is good

ok story idea....
world where, at least in one society, everyone goes thru a test at like....12ish? That tests what sort of animal their aura is. Usually it...closely runs in families, but not always? Predators are the upper class, ranging from, like, lions and such towards the top as a minor nobility/gentry class, to cats and foxes and such more towards a sorta mid-upper-middle class. Then there's prey, again with a range from the more "impressive" in the middle class to most being "working" class, u could say. Then there's insects, who are seen as "vermin". The highest, high nobility and royalty are "mythical" animals- unicorns, dragons, griffins, ect, while the absolutely lowest, many societies don't allow them to exist, are monsters- kelpies, sphinxes, naga, ect. Of course the current ruling royalty gets to decide what counts as a mythical beast and what counts as a monster but I am sure that works in a completely objective way! People can also use their aura to....its not *magic*, but its also not *not* magic. It generally allows you to use abilities that resemble ur animal, and auras have a strength that......very very very loosely correlates to the animal hierarchy, at least from insect to predator. Once it gets to mythical and monsters it gets even more erratic. Once you know your animal, you make (traditionally) or buy (more common in modern times) a mask (or a few for diff occasions) of that animal, and you never take it off- only in front of your spouse, your parents, or maybe your kids if you're a real cool parent. It is a huge taboo to be seen without a mask, worse then being w/o clothes. Kids also have masks, but they don't have to be of anything specific- in the past it was often a cuter or child version of the mask of someone in their family, nowadays it can be a character from a story, just a fashion one, ect.

So main character A is royalty- their dad is the current (dragon) king, and their family has been the rulers of the area for at least 7 generations. Their aura is....a cat, mostly. A cat with like a horn or something else small but incongruous, but 99% a cat. Their aura is...slightly above average? Despite this, everyone treats them like they're the latest in the long line of great and powerful royalty, at least to their face, even though they know that they're basically just an average predator with a wierd quirk that everyone's pretending is a real mythical beast. They're surly, a little spoiled, but mostly they are keenly aware how conditional their place is- only as long as everyone can pretend that they are a real mythical peace can they stay with their father, their few friends, their whole life. At night, they slip their guards to sneak away to an underground society of loud music and easy thrills, where everyone uses fake names but shows their real, unmasked face. There they are only an up and coming musician, with a shy and moderate attitude that usually only "heats" up when dealing with their rival/frenemy, one of the most established and confrontational musicians in the scene, who A can't help but admire despite knowing that they'd have nothing but contempt for the pampered royal.

Main character B is a monster, who had to run away from home after their aura test because their parents were going to turn them in. They turned to local crime lord Boss Moth for survival, and only years later was saved from his clutches by part bounty hunter part vigilante I probably can't call her Black Widow bc thats a Thing but she's a black widow so. However, Boss Moth still has blackmail on B, blackmail he claims Black Widow would kick B out for if she knew about. Boss Moth arranges for B to get a job in the royal palace, where B passes information back to Moth- which noble is bickering with who, who seems to be pro or against such and such new measure, the guard rotations, ect. Caught between the stress of "any moment now I could be caught and executed" and the stress of "even if I quit my life may as well be over because the only person who's ever cared about me will want nothing to do with me", B's only solace is their music, which quickly gains attention in the underground maskless scene. Down there, without their fake mouse mask weighing them down, B can be as sassy and confrontational as they like, can get out all the frustrations from dealing with condescending nobles and two faced mobsters all day. But soon enough they are reassigned from waiting no nobles to being a personal assistant to the heir, and to their surprise they find the royal grumpy but unpretentious and genuinely sweet underneath a rough exterior. Still, B knows that their new friendship, while getting closer and closer, is founded on lies, and as they find someone at the palace to get close to their guilt starts to mount...

 

I also have a world (well, a world with a country, which makes international politics fun) with similar mask culture! Well, the 'you are always wearing a mask and never take it off unless in the most intimate of situations' part; the masks for them are all unique and only the assassins use animal masks (because you can't tell anything from an animal mask. They're not unique.)

Anyway I think it's a super neat idea and story and I love the idea of cultures with masks and how that impacts things.

She's astrology themed and was a total believer in soulmates and fate and destiny and totally believed she and her crush were ~meant to be~, if only she liked girls. It didnt, like, occur to her that her crush could like a different girl, after all we're so compatible in our star charts and our blood types and I look just like the types if characters she likes in shows...

She has a very ditzy big sister aura, at least at the surface. Maybe a little bit ojou-sama. She comes from an extremely rich family and got bullied at the fancy private schools for being wierd and eccentric and clingy. She feels very entitled to the way she thinks the world should work, and as that world unravels around her silly but well meaning facade starts to get chipped away and she gets a whole lot meaner.
