i mean it could just as easily be about actual lake monsters considering This Band

but that was the association that sprung to mind for me! especially from the "just looking for a polling station" verse. "monsters" from across the nation emerging to demand legitimacy and recognition.

 

Their lyrics get pretty esoteric and are so very up for interpretation, but a lot of people have pegged that song as political in some capacity so it’s definitely not just you!

 

Oh hey also on the way home I realized what a lot of TMBG's music has been reminding me of:

The whole collection, not just that specific piece, and possibly the whole classical genre of fugues but I don't know enough about classical music to say. Purple Toupee, I Palindrome I, the end of Birdhouse In Your Soul, and a whole bunch more that I'm forgetting right now, they all somehow sound just like that.

 

Huh, I can hear that for sure! I don’t listen to much classical music so it’s not something I’d pick up on intuitively, but listening to that piece...

I finally realized the much quoted line about how everybody dies, is from Don't Let's Start, because my mental image of that song is just the bassline, "DON'T DON'T DON'T let's start, i've got a weeeak harrrt" and clips of the music video

I think my favorite tmbg lyric so far is “The truth is where the sculptor’s chisel chipped away the lie” from The Statue Got Me High. It’s such a poetically precise way of conveying such a bizarre feeling. Close second goes to the entire first verse of Ana Ng for pretty much the same reason - the image it crafts is so evocative and introduces the rest of the song so well!!

 

I know, right? A lot of their lyrics are just incredibly evocative like that. Like, they have such a way of putting feelings and concepts that don’t really have designated words but still exist into words.

I have a lot of fave TMBG lines, but I’ll talk about mine later. :P

 

Yes, exactly this! And they do it in meter and rhyme, and both of those are also really good!!
