Spoiler Yeah. For all that poor Karkat got played as a joke, he accomplished more in the fight than Vriska did (and I think it's very likely that his arc is going to end with an affirmation of the fact that his power and worth has never been to lead people into battle, he just thinks it should be). I'm also willing to bet that (Vriska) will end up doing something more important than post-Game-Over!Vriska.
good shit go౦ԁ sHit thats ✔ some goodshit rightthere right✔there ✔✔if i do ƽaү so my self i say so thats what im talking about right there right there (chorus: ʳᶦᵍʰᵗ ᵗʰᵉʳᵉ) mMMMMᎷМ НO0ОଠOOOOOОଠଠOoooᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒ Good shit
I'm just going to rant in here because this was added to by a mutual and I don't want to pick a fight right now (ok well, actually, I do, but I shouldn't)-- THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF PRETENTIOUS HORSESHIT I WAS GRUMBLING ABOUT. (Spoilers for Collide) Spoiler I'm feeling like. Just admit it, dude, you loved the comic and really built it up in your mind in between all the pauses and now that it doesn't live up to your rosy fucking memories and the hype you built up for it your own damn self, you're whining that it isn't the kind of work of art you can snobbishly lord over other people. It's doing the same thing as it ever has done. Also, are all of these assholes fucking dumb? No SHIT the LE fight didn't happen in its entirety yet. No SHIT this wasn't the climax. Did you miss the ominous pauses in the action and how it ended up on a really fucking ominous and creepy note? [cassandra pentaghast voice] UGH.
Spoiler I feel like going [Citation Needed]. Most of the preceding paragraphs about the art style had some interesting points. That when Hussie was very clearly working within restraints, there was more of coherent aesthetic. And that when he stopped restricting himself to those limitations, the OP expected the art to develop in a different direction than it did. And because Hussie didn't take the art in a while they think he should have, they think that he was either (a) wasting time being a 12 year old or (b) being deliberately shitty for the sake of irony/laziness. Yeah, okay, whatever. But where are they getting the ideas that this is meant to be totally rad or a magnum opus? Caliborn is a way for Hussie to say that he's just a guy messing around making art, and he's not necessarily any good at it, just working hard and improving slowly with time. That the fandom exploded and the comic got huge doesn't mean he has an obligation to live up to the fandom's expectations. And that's what the post seems to be. OP saying "but I thought he was going to do something else, and now I'm disappointed."
@swirlingflight I'm admiring the heck out of that last paragraph. <3 I never thought about Caliborn in that way, but that's such a good point. Would you want to make a tumblr post about that I can reblog, or can I quote you or something?
Feel free to quote me! I feel like I would need to add something more to make it a proper Tumblr post, and I'm blanking on other words to add.
i hadn't read something that pretentious since the cinema classes i had in college, holy shit. it's just homestuck
:') I mean, I enjoyed reading the starting bit. Analysing the shit out of things and taking them too far is one of my hobbies! But they were simultaneously saying things without basis (Hussie should have changed the art style to be MORE, or stuck to the original style, not this awkward in-between that's neither classic no cool enough)... and then admitting that "well maybe" I'm wrong, maybe I'm misunderstanding..." but without actually exploring what else might be the truth than the thing they were saying. So it's just... a lazy way of using a lot of words to complain about the direction Hussie took, and then pretend they weren't really criticizing it. BORing.
At this point, I'm just sitting back and happy to be along for the ride. Homestuck for me has always been about the journey and (to be cliche) the friends we made along the way. I know as a writer myself how hard endings are. Particularly endings of a serial release like this. I hope Hussie can give and ending that makes him happy and is true to what he feels the soul of the story is. I know I probably won't ever know if he feels that way but I hope he does. Also I am equally confused at people who thought this was the climax. People have pointed out the sinister pauses and visual techniques that set the mood on edge. But there's also the music. I'm gonna be up front in that I have a weird relationship to music. I've got mild synethesia--Music has both visual and a kinetic component in my brain, so I tend to talk about it as if it were alive. But the second half of the flash's music was not climax music. Heir of grief is appropriately named because it is absolutely dripping in regret and nostalgia and edging close to despair. It's music more fit for the nadir than the triumphant climax. We don't know what comes next--Hussie may well do some genre busting--but I'm pretty sure the end has only just begun. Also idk if it's intentional, but Heir of Grief reminded me of 65daysofstatic really intensely. And pretty much all of their songs are despair and defiance smashed together and caught on audio. Also dat remix of Doctor in Eternity Served Cold remix. Ugh. Doctor is my favorite leitmotif, and so I love any reprise of it.
hussie no (but consider this: hussie yes) i can't even lie. i have always enjoyed Homestuck completely unironically. i think it's a masterpiece of storytelling for a lot of reasons that i haven't articulated (but notably: meta holy shit good lord do i love meta) but. just. wow. are there bits that aren't good? sure, of course, nothing's perfect. but still. just. damn.
I want to do stupid bullshit with the fraymotif circles god dammit Hussie no I am being pulled into the hell of popculture religion and magic and I fucking hate it. MAKE THE CIRCLES GO AWAY.
