Sarnai is quivering with how badly she wants to go into that painting. Basically, she's going in. No question about it. But she'd rather the others want to go in too.

Somewhere, I hear the GMs of ages past cackling in anticipation.

...on further reflection, I perhaps should not have posted it where the DM can see it. although, I mean, it's still true. perhaps we aren't totally fucked, because the two members of the party who don't give a shit about academia are a) the highest-HP party members and b) probably the best in melee combat, and also one of them is quite likely to notice the danger and warn the bamboozled academics about it. and she's willing to tackle anyone who keeps acting stupid. but still. we're fucked. probably the Medusa is super articulate and educated and three-fifths of the party is gonna just be like, "you know, we shouldn't fight her! she has interesting things to say!" and then we'll all fail our saving throws against paralysis, turn to stone, and be shattered. that'll be a triumphant end to the campaign, that's for sure.

you have no idea. Liron is always ready to take notes 38D

also, do you think we could use the painting as a bag of holding when we go to sell things off? or does someone already have one? or could we use the corresponding painting on the other side as one while we're in the maze? assuming it isn't fixed in place and that moving it doesn't fuck things up, of course

wow, that's a really cool idea! nobody in our party has any magical artifacts, to my knowledge, so yeah, a bag of holding would be useful. although we'd only be able to get in and out of it once a month, so idk how useful it would be.

I think we can only use the portal at night until the new moon, then we have to wait a few weeks for the moon to get back to the same point (waning crescent, I think?)

edit: so that gives us a few days now, but then we're stuck for a while

Just been doing a lot this weekend, and meant to post last night but distracted+overwhelmed. I should be posting tonight though, and I'm sorry for the delays sometimes.

Edit: Also, as a complete aside, while Stella does not have the int to think up such a thing, all I can think of is putting food in the painting would effectively make it a fridge. Hell, if you put warm things in, like a freshly cooked meal, you have a dinner that's accessible three days a month that should still remain as hot and tasty as when you put it in. A hot fridge, but portable and less Undertale-y.

Totally understandable. Just a reminder, I don't mean to nag.

Not going to lie, every time I write 'college', I keep mentally thinking of her pronouncing it 'cool leg' and have been tempted to write it as such.

Stella's trying her best. She is meant for hitting things and beef, not so much knowing what empirical studies or abacuses are.

Stella is the best fighting potato and I <3 her already. Liron is also rly enjoying having someone to talk at about science stuff no matter who they are or what their lvl of understanding is

@thegrimsqueaker That depends on how you want to proceed. I don't know what kind of tests you have in mind.

As the illustrator put it: "Anything you can do in real life, plus cast spells."

It occurs to me that you didn't mark down prepared spells on your character sheet. As a wizard, you can prepare (Int modifier + your wizard level) spells each day, selecting any you have in your spellbook. You can then use any of those in a spell slot of an appropriate level.

Exceptions: If a spell has the [ritual] tag, you can cast it without preparing it or using a spell slot, but it takes 10 minutes longer. Cantrips are 0-level spells which you can cast at will without preparing or using spell slots.

(Forgive me if you already know this. I just wanted to be efficient in explaining if you didn't.)

Detect magic and identify can both be cast as rituals, for example, but identify requires a costly component not listed on your character sheet (100 gp pearl). All your other spells are rather destructive so I don't know if you want to use those for testing. :P In any case, let me know what spells you have prepared.

we could also wait on the whole testing-painting front and instead go track down the Three Sisters Chanterelle mentioned. (very Greek mythology, I like.) she said they know about "the Medusa's works" and would trade that information for news of the modern world, so they could probably tell the party what's up with the painting in more detail than Sarnai and Liron could figure out in the field. once Alabaster finishes checking out the room and once we decide whether we want to put shit in the painting to store it, I think our first priority should be getting more info out of Chanterelle. like, who is she in more detail than her name? when's she from? why'd she get imprisoned? who's the Medusa? what's she like? what's the Maze? can she tell us more about the treasure she mentioned is in there? etc., etc., etc. I can come up with questions all day, but that's not exactly fun roleplaying, is it. :P

wait, does identify require the component if it's prepared, or if it it's cast as a ritual, or just always? and I thought having a focus object eliminated the need for components?
either way, I get seven prepared spells so:
burning hands, feather fall, magic missile, locate object, scorching ray, shield and fireball

Components with a specific cost, like "diamomd dust equal to 1000 gp" or "a pearl equal to 10gp" we still gotta pay for. Components like "a feather" are covered by the focus.

    Not sure how ritual works.

@thegrimsqueaker @swirlingflight is correct. Also ritual spells do still require components if cost is listed.

The good news is that in 5e components are no longer consumed by their spells unless specifically indicated. So once you have that 100 gp pearl you can keep using it indefinitely.

    OMG

Getting the expensive component the first time can be a mini quest with a meaningful resolution now
