Besides, the representation that's most missing is indigenous Australians, and frankly I could see their small population being wiped out by assholes, or hiding well away from them. About 2% of Australia's current population claims indigenous identity, but a large proportion of that number is these days mixed, and in the future likely even more so (~70% are in mixed-race relationships). The film does have a black actress and two Pacific Islander actresses in major roles, so better than many. And Pacific Islander representation otherwise is rare except for Dwayne Johnson.
Man, my brain did a weird thing where it didn't include them in the poc label at all. How weird, brain. I retract my previous comment, I think. But considering how they were treated practically all the time when I was in Australia, no surprise. (Everyone ignored them, it was like they were in a parallel reality and no one except me and whoever was with me could see them. Chilling.)
MAD. MAX. MAD MAX. I am not a big fan of action movies (like but don't love, usually), ESPECIALLY not action movies that are basically two hour movies with a five minute angst and coffee break in the middle, but HAAAAAAOH MY GOD. I am so pumped. I got out of the theater like IMMA BUZZ MY HAIR AND BE FURIOSA. and I'm really sad about Nux. excited about ceruleancynic's fix-it fic. like. DANG
if you have the time/energy I would love a link to your fave(s)? also I drew Nux as a helmsman :D this was so fun holy shit. even the export function in sketchbook pro turned it into a fuzzy JPEG for some reason idk why spoiler for gross tentacle wires Spoiler: immortan joe please properly install your helmsmen instead of just nailing them to walls. I promise they will last longer. joe plz.
I'm enjoying Burn It All Away and All Things Shiny and Chrome, both Nux/Capable-centric. Warning, the first one goes into the whole abuse thing as a general theme, while the second brushes it under the rug in favor of more exploring the warboy mentality. Also, the inevitable coffeeshop AU: Blood, Coffee and Motor Oil, which is more Max/Furiosia, but has Nux/Capable on the side.
I have also seen people decrying it as racist, and I disagree. On the one hand, I would never want to downplay the serious problem that is a continued systematic lack of representation. However, among what we do have (particularly from big films), this movie did a decent job. The complaint I saw claimed there were NO people of color at all, which is simply untrue. At least two of the wives are women of color, and like people were talking about up there, a couple Pacific Islanders, who are harder to spot but still important. Also, there was no racist message. The women of color did not die disproportionately to the white women, and there was no race-reliant plot points. That being said, the background was a sea of (very dusty) white people, which continues to be a problem. I guess my point is that I'm super down for discussion of racial problems, but attacking films that are already making some positive change disproportionately to films that are not is counterproductive. Also, ALKGHDLKGDKLGJDSKGJ Gotta go see it again. My gf and our friend probs will later this week...
Just saw it with my mom and :D :D :D :D :D Looks like people in here have already talked about how fucking awesome the story was, but damn, those aesthetics, too. Especially the laaaaandscapes. I fucking love deserts. And the "eh, just stick some more cars on it" approach to vehicles. And the crazy bullshit death-cult weapons like the grenade spears. And the way that when they actually drive through the (former) Green Place, it isn't hyped up or dramatic irony'd at all, so you're caught just as unawares as the characters. Also, badass deadeye mothercycle grannies (I'm leaving that typo). The world always needs more of those. #say @bluefox, Immortan is 8 letters...
I have so much I love and want to say about this movie that it just comes out as lots of shouting. BUT I preordered the Blu-ray so when it comes out then I am going to liberal arts nerd all over the thing and not shut up ESPECIALLY about how the War Boys are a disposable resource (death cult, half life) and the Wives are a cherished resource (baby incubators) at the Citadel; but both just a resource or a means to an end for Immortan Joe, and we see both Nux and the Wives reject or rewrite their narratives. Just. Argh. WITNESS ME
I've discovered that my absolute favorite thing about Fury Road is every single time Nux says "Blood bag!" both in film and in fic. Not like he doesn't view Max as a person, but as if he genuinely thinks that this is an appropriate name for a person, which, to be honest, in the world of Mad Max it kind of is.
Nux is amazingly important to me. The little war boy that could. ;-; Him and the effects were probably my favorite parts of the film. I really love knowing that the explosions are actual explosions, and those people on poles are actually on poles, and that the guitar is an actual guitar that shoots out literal fire. This pleases me heavily and it offered the film a sort of weight to it that I feel is missing in lots of things recently. A weight and the delightful knowledge that people could have been horribly deadified at any number of moments. Which is awful to say but it does add something to films for me. That and I really loved how very little dialogue there was in the film. Not the most dialogue heavy thing and there are just huge stretches without it. Makes me happy. Reminds me of stuff I really liked about the first Conan film with Arnold.
Also the fact that for a lot of the effects Miller was like "okay, that looks dangerous, we can do this in CG" and then the effects and stunt guys are just "haha, nope, we're doing this for real, look at this bit we already filmed".
Like, the guitar being really a flamethrower was Miller, but he wanted to film the polecats on stationary vehicles and they just filmed like a minute on moving without telling him first just to show that they could.
So I saw it again today and the one bit that I can't believe I haven't seen a million gifs of on tumblr is the bit where Nux kisses Capable's cheek. Just a quick casual peck and then he's off to be the giant puppy we all know and love. Did he learn that from Capable? Is that something he already knew about? Do War Boys just give each other cheek kisses all the time when they're not punching each other?
