Yes, well, this is sort of the issue.

Yes, Methods of Rationality is morally appalling.

Yes, Methods of Rationality is basically Harry Potter fan fiction written for people who hate Harry Potter.

Yes, Methods of Rationality is a one-note moralising screed.

Yes, Methods of Rationality has no idea how twelve year olds think and its portrayal of Harry's psychology is singularly unconvincing.

But what is most damning is simply this: Methods of Rationality is very poorly written; and reading it for any length of time makes me wish I could give Yudkowsky a good whack in his smug, irrational, bigoted face. Riffing makes it marginally more tolerable, at least.

Did you know that David Brin unironically puts it alongside authors like Tolkien, Gaiman, or Mieville on his list of great fantasy stories? I'm not even any great fan of Mieville, but I can understand why you might put him there. Methods of Rationality, on the other hand? I am sorry, David Brin, but you are wrong. Your subjective recommendation is wrong. I know subjective preferences can't be wrong, but yours is still wrong, because that is just how wrong you are.

Yeah but he tries not to warn people as a way of warning people, so in effect, he's warning people. It's like saying "Don't think about Pink Elephants" and then giving a seven hour lecture on why Pink Elephants are wrong using Naruto Characters to illustrate your point.

I like how he just casually drops in all these mad ambitions. He wants the ear of a multi-billionaire for his ideas on city development, to replace Wikipedia with his own software, and for dessert, he wants to run a choose-your-own-adventure and write a little book on AI. He tops it off by announcing that he may have developed financial superpowers, and wants to find out by investing in a series of techno-libertarian wet dreams, ranging from 'impractical' (mosquito-killing, laser-armed drones) to 'actually quite unethical' (cutting corners by developing drugs in laxer regimes).

I recommend that all fanfiction writers adopt this style of chutzpah in their Author's Notes. For example, at the end of a chapter of My Immortal, the author should request to meet the management of Hot Topic, have her story made into a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, and announce her intention to start a new Satanic Church, which she expects to garner a billion adherents or so.
