Beast: The Primordial, a New World of Darkness splat written by Matt McFarland. It's a game in which you play as people whose souls have been eaten by the Nightmare within the Primordial Dream, and who go around feeding on people's terror and suffering in order to ensure they are terrified of the Nightmare. However, doing this creates eddies in the Primordial Dream which in turn give rise to Heroes, which are people who are driven to hunt Beasts and the magical powers to do so. However, Heroes are bad because they support Gamergate (this is almost a direct quote from the author).

That is to say: it's a deeply morally confused game in which you play monsters who basically draw their power from being abusive bastards, (supposedly 'to teach lessons' like being afraid of the dark (literally) or submitting to power (really) but pssh), and fight normal-people-empowered-by-magic, who want to kill you for being a horrible monster that hurts people so you can eat their suffering, but these Heroes are presented as bad for opposing you because of a vague wave of association with politics the author doesn't like combined with bald assertion. (Note that pretty much all Hero antagonists actually presented are... well, heroic, at worst smug and/or reckless.)

 

...there are so many better ways to play Dark Is Not Bad/Light Is Not Good. an almost endless amount, in fact.

 

Correct! An excellent example would be, I dunno, every other entry in the World of Darkness games, but most especially Demon: The Fallen (in which you play as the rogue agents of the God-Machine, which, as the name suggests, is very much angelic in aesthetic and attitude... but also wants all reality to fall into its mechanistic control), which is, bizarrely, written partially by the same author.

 

I'm looking at that review and it's like if an edgy 14-year-old looked at the World of Darkness, a franchise with a very high base Edgy-14-Year-Old Quotient, and decided it wasn't Edgy-14-Year-Old enough, so they made their own splat book to be the best splat book that would replace all the other splatbooks and be universally lauded because only it has a high enough level of Edgy 14-Year-Old.
