forgot to add this promo image for the DVD release: Spoiler: I realized the images are a little big CRT TV and an Atari 2600, fits right in with the late 70's/early 80's timeline they were going for. although it looks specifically like a 4 switch atari which would mean that it is at least 1980 and oh my god why am I over analyzing a doodle
*BANGS FISTS ON THE TABLE* I AM HERE FOR THIS CROSSOVER AU Though a surprising number of people have commented that this can't happen because OTGW was set in the 90's or something because Sara didn't have a tape player and the music is "modern" but... no. No, there are tons of design choices that point to the time period they said they wanted it at in the commentary (late 70's/early 80's) the interior decorating is 70's/80's (THAT WALLPAPER, so much orange and green, wood paneling everywhere, those big bulky square fans), they took the halloween costume designs from looking up "retro costume designs" from like the 60's-80's, the "modern music" at the party is soooo totally 80's pop which modern music from the past couple years has taken a lot of influence from. Even all the cars have those rectangular headlights! Maybe Sara doesn't have a tape player because.... she doesn't have one. Or maybe she does have one and it was just an excuse to see him because I am practically blind to flirting but wow she seemed pretty him and Wirt has the self confidence of a moldy potato and can't see it. I mean he also thinks everyone else thinks he's a loser but everyone actually wanted him to be around.
Actually yeah that's one of the things I liked about OTGW, you're expecting Wirt to be bullied/ignored nerd but people just like him ok, no one gives him any trouble than friendly ribbing, and everyone is just pretty cool. It's a neat twist.
according to the commentary (I'll probably post highlights of that after finals are over) they did that on purpose, specifically to emphasize how messed up Wirt is/how wrong his assumptions are. Also they wanted to illustrate how a lot of times kids do not see themselves as being cool, but other people think they are cool. Like he learned as an adult that during his teenage years that the "cool kids" thought that he was the cool/"rebellious" one because he was an art kid.
Yeah, that's what I figured on the assumptions thing. I mean it's not like that'd happen by accident.
well I figured it was either that, or the whole "high school jock/prep being assholes to the nerdy kid" has been done to death, had it's small but tasteful funeral service, and then had it's corpse dug up several years later and then done some more, so making Wirt an incredibly unreliable narrator would be a breath of fresh air, and the implications for his character would be bonus points after that.
so I was gonna make a post here with the general summary/info from the commentary from each episode because I think the commentary is p. interesting but then I realized that required a lot more processing power than I currently posses so anyways, here are the lyrics to the "modern" music from episode 9. The rock song that becomes the motif for Wirt and Sarah this episode: The angels have gone The sun has gone south You're sinkin' like a stone before the tide The river runs cold the fight is over still the haunted ruins of night call your name then the pop song which is so 80's it hurts (also there are probably errors in the lyrics because while it sounds really cool, parts of the lyrics sound mumble-y to me even when I do tricks to filter out other information like covering my eyes or wearing my hedphones so I did my best to translate them into words) I wish that I was shadow, I'd never leave your side and oh, on the moon's sides I would never hide their eyes are a thousand times deeper than the sky and I am a tiny star falling for all time when you are done, there are personal that swallow me inside and oh, I will follow you far into the night their eyes are a thousand times deeper than the sky and I am a tiny star blurring for all time And the last song of the episode that has lyrics, that sounds a lot older than 80's to me, probably because it's a reference to their near death experience/falling into the unknown where they encounter people from various times in the past. There's an old black train a-comin' scraping on the iron you don't need no ticket boys it'll take you when it's time
oh haha I forgot the credits song which is totally different from the normal piano music in other episodes: There you are again I see you staring at my window from the street you could've had your chance you could have tried I just don't understand
I saw this and had to post it here not only for the jokes but also because I want to mention how much I appreciate the awesome voice acting this series has
