Thirding peas. I'm going to take over an entire fence with peas. peas as far as they will go.

Might try and talk my mom into letting me do beans, too, but. peas.

can i just make the plant nerd thread my home page?
OK @Morven, FEW WEEKS LATER I CATCH YOUR POINT its been unusually cold and rainy this year and everything is moving soooo much slower than last year... there's also a lot more established so demands on the soil are tough... i'm still jealous of your soil tho

    as anyone who's been paying attention to my ramblings knows, i love compost. and since i compost everything that will break down in compost and not poison it -- including pet hair and paper -- my compost is spectacularly effective. anything i plant in it goes up like a rocket. the peas are taking over. the tomatoes may be unkillable. the problem is... weeds love it too. and i can't bend over to weed. ;_;

you'd think it'd be less bad in the dome, where weed seeds can't blow in or get pooped onto it by birds or whatever. but it turns out the heat of composting, which kills off all other weed seeds, only gets locust seeds excited. and we have two locust trees in our yard. the pods they drop every fall make good fertilizer, but the seeds survive the composting and as soon as i've turned the compost into a garden bed or container they go I HAVE ARRIVED and pop up like a stripper out of a cake.

i need to get rid of those locust trees. i want apple trees.

Having no idea what a locust tree is, it's a terrifying mental image.

they're actually quite nice trees, except every year they do this:

and those pods make a massive mess and the seeds are impossible to kill. also the leaves are too small to rake.

Do you use a hoe? My grampa has bad knees, but that works really well for him.

my hoe skills are not all that. i should get better at it. i'm just scared i'll hoe up the plants i want to keep.

I'm told the big thing is that most folks try to hoe way out in front of them, and it's really more like the motion you'd use with a broom. That totally makes sense, though.

@jacktrash oh man, so that's what those trees are called. they grow up by my library and while they're pretty they really do make such a mess. i'm glad i'm not responsible for cleaning up after one.

My preference for weedy shit is those little three prong rakes, but I'm the gardener who just sits next to the plants.

My garden is a mess. I managed to rescue my cherry sapling from wind burn sustained last year and my tree peony is spectacular but the rest of the garden has been overrun with dandelions, which have wrapped their tap roots round the gas line, damn them. I'm considering a gravel garden at the front (plant in pots, love container gardening) and paving a bit of the back lawn to make space for a birly but the gardening is feeling like a chore, you know? I wish I could get back to enjoying it again.

Does anyone have any opinions on those aerogarden things? It's pretty pricy but I've been kinda interested in growing stuff (chillis, specifically) and the backyard here is definitely not an option (plus I don't even know whether there are rules for gardening on rental property, /shrug). It's sort of ideal for me because I like the idea of being able to move my garden with me when I move out. I follow someone on tumblr who bought one and it seems pretty interesting! So yeah, opinions? Anyone know anyone who has one? Am I going to have to put it at the top of the highest shelf so my cat can't get at it? Curious beginner right here. Also yes I am aware that Monsanto is the devil.

i have one, i've grown a few rounds of stuff in it. it turned out to suck for anything that needs pollination, because hand-pollinating is a constant chore and for some plants it needs to be done at a particular time of day, and honestly after a few weeks i was like FUCK THIS I WILL JUST BUY THE DAMN TOMATOES AT THE STORE. but for flowers and herbs it's kind of great.

Worked pretty well for tomatoes and herbs here, but we stopped using ours because you had to buy the little seedpacks and fertilizer specifically for it. It may be possible to make your own though. XP

Also, a lot will grow just in a sunny window, if available.

My weird punk gardening technique seems to be working..! everything reseeded a lot and the roots will till the soil so i just have to mow everything down in the winter and work it into the soil and it should just repopulate itself i hope. the literal poor man's garden

Yesterday I harvested three more loads of rocks. The big tire is almost full.

Need to get the fuckers done this week so I can buy plants as soon as my mom gets paid.

Got my pre-sprouted plants in the ground today! The seeds are still in the sprout them in paper towel plates. My pot of zucchini that I thought was three plants turned out to be four! Hopefully the baby will actually grow...
