Pretty sure Kazerad suggested "skeevies" at some point, as a counterpart to the more serious "switches".

I think that still carries some of the disgust/revulsion association that "squick" has.

I agree the term is a good idea, but I don't really have a suggestion for it either, I'm afraid.

    And, because resistance is futile:
How is that working out for you? You treating yourself right?

I can support jeebs, definitely. Skeevy also carries undertones to me that already exist.

(Specifically, it's the emotional response to puas existing.)

ask jeeves always reminded me of when velma said "jinkies!" whenever something suprised her in scooby doo. still going with the scooby theme,

what about a zoink? as in a zoink is something that startles you because of past connotations but is easily logic-ed out before anything too bad can come of it.

also the word jolt is another name for startle, would that work?

Oh, I like zoink! I mean, of course everyone will think Scooby-Doo, but I can't think of extra connotations that has that wouldn't work.

Jolt is too 'already a real word' to me, unfortunately. xD But other than that, I don't have objections

Zoink seems goofy to me but that might just means it is suitably non-threatening-sounding? I'm gonna vaguely second zoink as a word for this.

Honestly, I think it fits the "exclamation of surprise"/"involuntary reaction" part of the thing fairly well.

I mean it does sound goofy too, but quite a lot of kinda-serious things do.

I think "jolt" fits a bit better with my own personal experiences, but "zoink" could work pretty well too.

Definitely agreed that it's something that needs a term, since I know I at least have things that I refer to as triggers (since they do produce an involuntary reaction and remind me of Bad Past Shit) and are definitely more severe than squicks, but that...aren't necessarily as severe as actual triggers? Like, my reaction to (of all things) redrom Equius/Aradia would fall under that heading, since it reminds me of my stalker and my rape and all sorts of gross shit and causes a definite panic response, but it's also something I can usually calm myself down from (unless I'm already in a shite mood).

So...definitely seconding either "jolt" or "zoink!"

What if 'nopes'? From the verb, like, things that make you nope out of a situation?

I like it but idk if it would work in a sentence structure? (btw "A nopes" or "A nope"?)
plus it seems like a general refusal to engage iirc we wanted something a bit more anxiety-implying?

Ah. I guess too much /x/ and r/creepy "nope" reads as specifically fear and anxiety to me. Possible context problem there.

"Thats a nope for me", "i dont have a lot of nopes but xyz gets to me."

It could also be my own brainweird I get a lot of generalized vague anxiety around social stuff and relatively little about specific things so I might not get that reaction to supposedly fear-inducing stuff.

Examples would be "Talking to strangers-with-authority over the phone is a nope for me"?

Thats how id phrase it, yeah. Also gosh that activity sucks, so much seconding. :/

I actually like "nope" in this context. I like it a lot. Plus there's some degree of precedent--like, in the RP community, if someone refers to something as a "hard no," it means something they won't RP. So referring to something like that as "a nope" makes a lot of sense to me.

Yeah, nope works too, and it's already made the shift to a verb, I can easily it going to a noun (and I feel like I have seen it used like this at least once)

Has anyone checked if there's another language with a decent term for this? (German has a lot of nifty words I know). This is English that we're talking about, begging borrowing, and mugging languages in dark alleys for their volcabulary is a time-honoured tradition.

If you really wanna borrow from German there is gonna be like ten syllables
    Unwohlseinsgefühl? Furchtsreaktion?
In German we usually actually steal English wordsfor such stuff these days, don't look at us.
("Ein Meh?" But 'Meh' is more a word/sound for indifference or boredom)
