Is anyone else fashed about the kindle covers for The Immortals looking like Harry Potter house mascots?? I want Weryn and his horns, dammit! :P

/me might be about to buy the books because finding a decent pirate copy is illegal hard

 

they do look like harry potter houses and I'm sad.

My magic would be maroon, because I'm edgy. And I'd be an ambient mage who does carpentry, because this is magic land and I like building things with my hands.

 

The tortall books have a special place in my heart, but I love love love circle of magic.

I was the weird rude pudgy nerd with glasses growing up, so tris was Important to me. Also, the world building was great, I love the idea of ambient magic (it jives well with my own spiritual beliefs) and sandry actually uses a spindle correctly which is a thing you never see in fiction

 

mine would be a dark reddish pink if that description makes any sense
and I mean, there's plenty of stuff I'd like to use it for but I'd probably end up doing healing stuff because "YOU ARE SICK AND THIS MAKES ME SAD LET ME HELP YOU SO EVERYTHING IS LESS SAD"
that or book magic. like, writing magic. because my sewing might be mediocre and I cannot care for plants to save my life, but I can fucking write. (and I enjoy it, when it's not for school.)

 

So, the Gift often seemed to match people's eye colors, (the notable exception that I remember being Roger of Conte, both before and after he stole Thom's gift). But...it also seems to more-or-less follow color magic.
For me, I think my Gift would be greenish-grey. More or less like my eyes, but also because green is often associated with healing and growth, and grey is associated with concealment.
Alternatively, I put way too much thought into stuff like this and it was actually completely random, idk.

If I were going the Emelan route, I'd be an ambient healer, because reasons. (If I could somehow translate ambient magic to the everyday world though, I'd be an ambient computer mage, also because reasons!)

i think thatd legitimatelt be A Thing in modern au, like,computers are a thing, people put their energy into conputery things, thus at least some ambient mages are gonna be computer mages, oh man i'm tired so maybe that makes less sense or is less exciting than i think it is but ye magic!!

I crochet/knit and im Glad to have read the emelan books because, dang, creating/doing things and Its Magic, just normal shish like dancing or gently papping a stone and boom its now your bff rockfriend

 

I have a sudden mighty need for a modern-day Emelan/Tortall AU. Can that be a thing?

Ahhhhh I love those books. And I love the making-things magic, like, just some people have magic for cooking or sewing or carving wood or WHATEVER. Great. Wonderful. I read the Immortals first, I think.

 

There is a (sadly unfinished) modern AU Emelan fic on AO3 that is based around the Australian foster care system and it was really fucking good goddamn.

Wouldn't it be more like...a loose collection of private schools? Like they share a name, and all ahve the same general rules, but each school ahs its own administrators and stuff? Kind of how some colleges have multiple campuses in different geographical areas?

Hm, tho. I wonder how international the schooling system would be, and whether it would still involve cross-cultural exchange? I mean, if we assume Emelan is more along the lines of Europe in terms of country connections, that's easier to finagle than trying to mash like seven USAs together. So semi-religious private schools with boarding aspects... how would the foster care system work in that case, I wonder?

 

Year-round boarders? Maybe the teachers live at the school too, or have the option to do so? Orrrr maybe there's just summer staff?
