does he have dark dots on his nose?? my parents have an orange boy with nose freckles like that (...named Freddy)

 

Yep. He has dark spots all over him, actually, with little individual black hairs growing wherever they are (plus his funky black and white whiskers, which are great).

He originally belonged to a friend of my mother's who passed away suddenly a little over a year ago now, so we ended up adopting him and her other two cats, Simon (another, much rounder orange boy), and Sophie (a squishy tabby girl with big whiskers). He's about 14 years old, according to the vet.

 

Ohhh our orange tabby has the same greying that he has, and he's got freckles on the inside of his lips and gums--is your boy the same way?

 

He has a big black splotch on his lips and a couple of smaller dots.

 

I wonder if it's a tabby thing! We've always wondered with our boy, since they're pretty clearly freckles and not anything else, but it's good to know someone else has an Orange Boy with the same thing. :D

I have found that they likely have lentigo! Most common in cats with orange in their coat, so you might see them on calicos or torties too. It causes harmless spots where melanocytes are making extra melanin, very similar to freckles (although they don't respond to sunlight). They may get more as they get older. It might also change fur coloration? That's a guess on my part, but I believe that the pigments in fur are similar to those in skin, so maybe :o

so inspired by @Saro i decided to read about lentigo, and i discovered that... 95% of what i always thought were freckles on my body are actually lentigines, because they are always there and always the same size and not related to sun exposure, and also are darker than the sun-induced freckles i DO get. i am so happy to know that Dalton's speckles and my speckles are the same kind of speckles!

They are snuggling cause it's chilly (^v^) they usually won't go near each other when sleeping, even to the point of fighting, so this is pretty amazing
