Nightbeat! DEEP PHASE ONE LORE: he was there right at the beginning of the IDW run annnnnd was promptly killed off. It was part of the shenanigans revolving around Cyclonus's backstory. So he's a little dead, BUT, since you never knew he died, it isn't spoilers to say that he's coming back! He's a mind control zombie trapped in another universe right now, but he'll be making a return in Dark Cybertron around mtmte 22-27 or so. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH HE IS ONE OF MY BEST BOYS

And there is definite shipping potential with Swerve! I haven't read as much as I want to, but I wrote a thing with cygate+swerve, and there was loads of cute potential. And there is future shippy material ahead of you! Like swearth (where everybody knows your name). An extremely happy episode issue with nothing sad or dark going on at all (also the issue with Rodimus's humansona)

And! Trivia point! The two thugs who were being arrested there are ALSO the two dipshits who helped Pharma set off the rust plague thing on Delphi. They have.... made a number of poor decisions :T

Ahahahaaaaa oh man, in a series PACKED with sad lore, Swerve straight-up breaks my goddamn heart. Rewind made me cry first, but Swerve made me cry second. It is *GOOD* stuff :DDDD

(the chin thing is really funny to me, because I just watched the Lindsay Ellis loose canon on Starscream today, and she covered the 2007 Transformers Animated, or as she calls it, Transformers CHIIIIIINS, so I'd been thinking fondly of how restrained the comics chins are. but yes, it is definitely..... RELATIVE restraint XDDD)

The functionist lore doesn't go too far at this point, but oh MAN does it come back with a vengeance later!!! You get another big infodump across a whole arc in the mid-thirties, then there's even more after the series name changes to Lost Light (mid-fifties). That next arc is just.... GLORIOUS. Some of the best content in the series, honestly. And functionism and cold construction got incorporated across the franchise! The exrid line has had some flashbacks to functionist days now, but they've gripped me less than the mtmte content.

What else. You'll learn more about relinquishment clinics soon, if I'm remembering things right, and it gets darker than what you hear about in this section! And the series goes HARD on robots and death, and their particular experience of it. Both how they've been shaped by the war and how they as a species deal. It ties in a lot with psychological stuff, but it's all played in really fresh and emotionally gripping ways. And, frequently. balancing gore and humor XD

Oh, lmao, I just remembered something. Quark drank blood by accident here. In the Windblade miniseries, there's a mech the size of a city (Metroplex) and one guy goes climbing into his systems to drink some of that tasty free energon. This series gets weird and dark with the characters and I love it XDD

Yeah, there is a lot of stuff in this series that would be labeled "body horror" if it happened to a person, or even just anything organic. But that's why we have robots!

SOON. i love what psychological stuff i've gotten so far, i'm really excited to see where it goes! ngl ngl one of the big reasons i decided to read it is because y'all lured me in with promises of well-handled trauma and such, and so far it has done really excellently. i'm looking forward to getting my heart ripped out

Ironfist was a major character in Last Stand of the Wreckers, aka An Extremely Violent History of Why the Lost Light is So Damn Haunted.

Some of the academy people will come up again but I wouldn’t worry about it too much for now.

In the cameos, it can be hard to tell who matters for future plot, and who's just a nod and wink to the old-school superfans who'll recognize a cameo by a minor character, and the shadowplay arc was pretty bad for that. The academy folks are some relevant, but you don't have to remember who everyone you meet is going forward! Skids is around pretty consistently and Trailbreaker/Trailcutter has been popping up on the regular on the LL, but the story is pretty good about reminding you about his deal whenever he shows up.

But oh man, Ironfist, MY BOY, MY SON. He is an incredible sweetheart and a total sperg and a weapons engineer and I love him with a burning passion. LSOTW is a QUALITY, quality miniseries that I highly recommend. It's about propaganda and redshirts and has some relevant history for the next major arc to follow the shadowplay one, and VERITY CARLO aka the best human character to ever share the stage with these silly robots. She's... not at her best art-wise in LSOTW, but I love the story to pieces and it's just fascinating universe flavor. And it's relevant to a couple plot points moving forward from here, but not critically so.

I think you can read up through issue 13 without any problems, whichever way the urge takes you! It's issue 14 where things become plot-relevant to mtmte. And there are some prose stories that go with the comics in a few places, and if you can find them, lsotw has some GOOD SHIT. I think they've been posted in the main tf thread before, but I'd have to dig to find where
