"Freeing" Symmetra from Vishkar, because Symmetra cannot make her own choices about what kind of organizations deserve her loyalty. Because she needs someone else to unpack all the relevant baggage about being raised up from nothing and given the means and methods to enact the kind of change she wants or thinks she wants to see, because Symmetra can't possibly do that on her own without a love interest to scoop her up and take her somewhere where she doesn't have to make difficult moral choices for herself!!! That's what lovers are for, right???

Fuck that noise. Symmetra needs to figure this shit out for herself. How else is she ever gonna be satisfied? Girl could use someone to support her, someone to help her think through things she'd rather not think about, sure, but absolutely not someone to "rescue" her.

 

Yeah, Symmetra is being used and exploited, but I would say that while she could use some help breaking this shit down (from someone she presumably trusted, friend or lover) the decision ultimately has to be hers. She's a Vishkat employee, not a Vishkar slave, and if she was going to be free of the lies and manipulation that's made up her life, she's got to be the one to take the first step.

 

i think it's part of purity culture with people implying/thinking/claiming symm needs to be freed. if she chooses to stay there, then she's a Bad Person, and you can't like bad people! that makes you a bad person. so they decide she's forced to be there, rather than staying out of it being the one source of stability in her childhood, then she's not really a Bad Person, and folks can like her without guilt

 

I think it's also in part a reaction to people saying the Symmetra is The Most Evil back in the early days of her comic release, where there was a lot of "you can't like Symmetra even if she's Indian, even if she's autistic, even if she's a woman, she's EVILBAD and you're a TERRIBLE PERSON" so it's jumping through the hoops of purity culture until it becomes natural to say that She Must Be Freed By A Third Party.

(I mean, I'd get into the differences between choosing to stay because you can, choosing to stay because it's the only thing you know, choosing to stay because the consequences of leaving are even worse, and being forced to stay in the most hamfisted slavery-not-slavery metaphor ever, but I figure pretty much everyone here gets the nuance there? Honestly, I can't think of any Overwatch character that is EvilBadWrong forever with no reason or motivation that mitigates the EvilBadWrongness of it. The Talon operatives have poignant backstories, Symmetra and Hanzo are victims of their circumstances, the Junkers are two dudes trying to make it in a brutal world, the old Overwatch agents are trying to find their footing in a world that might need them and might not, and every character has conflicting motivations and desires and histories that lead to a really messy grey. It's... nice, actually, especially when you come from a usual One Is Bad, One Is Good narrative into this absolute clusterfuck of conflicting interests.)

 

It strikes me that none of the heroes working for Talon are really bought into whatever Talon's plans are; they're using it for their own ends (Reaper, Sombra) or they're there because of their minds being fucked with (Widowmaker).

 

Hi I haven't caught up with the thread for a while and I am downloading patches to finally play Sombra but I just discovered MMD's an in the process discovered THIS and you all need to see it, it's very important.

 

So! New shit! 1v1 is awful and I suck at it, and this one guy learned that I can't kill people who are friendly at me and exploited it for a perfect 5/5 victory. - w - I played two rounds then got sick of it.
That Mercy buff is really fucking potent! Makes it a cakewalk to keep alive so long as you're even the slightest bit evasive.
Sombra is too complicated for me, and I don't quite understand what her abilities do yet. Played one round as her, and had no clue what even the fuck was happening. Seems cool, ut doubt I'll play much of her. I like my attackers simple. Tracer, Pharah, and 76 are the only DPS I can handle.
Mercy in 3v3 is pretty solid! We only lost the rounds where I died first, and I managed to keep all three of us alive for the ones where I didn't get picked off! Fun times.
Was afraid I'd lost all my Symmetra mojo in the ages since I've last played her, but nope! Gold elims and damage, got the enemy running scared whenever I started moving their direction. Fun times! Will maybe take Attackmetra for a spin one of these days.

Has anyone else felt that the quality of opponents has really gone down since the black friday week 40% discount? Especially late in the day, there's a spread between level 2 and level 102 in the same team. I've been finding myself as Mercy feeling more comfortable defending myself with the gun than healing a DPS near me while they kill the threat. Because they won't. It constantly feels like 2 or 3 players are being made to carry the whole team.

@tinyhydra the Mercy buff is amazing. Provided there's enough cover you can stay alive pretty easily. It's just getting caught in the open still hurts.

 

Ana can be pretty beastly in 3v3. Though my favorite mode is still mystery match because fuck it. 1v1 is ok. I am ok with it and mostly I am playing it as an easy way to get my boxes before I go and play the stupider modes where my chances of winning are much lower. Also Sombra is plenty simple. Or at the very least she has instantly fucking clicked with me.

Also yeah. There's a lot of new people now. To murder.

 

76 meanwhile I just. Cannot play. Nothing about him feels right. He is very eh.

 

I really really want to be good at Sombra. She's so cool. I played one game with her and failed miserably. I have no idea how her stealth even works precisely.

I want to be as good at Sombra as this guy is at Lucio.

 

D.Va+Zenyatta in 3v3 is pretty beastly. As long as I'm keeping an eye on my healer, it's fantastic, and D.Va's sheer survivability is amazing.

Honestly though, I'm pretty happy for the influx of new players. It'll take a while for them to get into the groove, but I'll take an idiot DPS who's still learning this whole shooter thing over a tryhard comp wannabe who's barely managed to scrape up one whole golden gun through two season of comp and thinks their god's gift to fucking healers.

 

Yeah. I've started trying to help out the ones who look like they're having trouble but are trying. After all, I'm essentially new to shooters; I haven't seriously played one since the original Doom. Little bits of messing around, but that's it. However I know tactics a bit from grinding WoW battlegrounds and War Thunder Ground Forces, the latter especially important in terms of learning to use cover. Using cover is critical especially if you're going to play a squishy.

Seriously. You're helping move it and you have a moving piece of cover to hide behind. Hump that payload good, boys and girls and enbies.

Gods yes. I dance around that thing all the time. I also like to stick sentries on it. Like. I love that. A LOT.

 

If I knew it wouldn't be destroyed five seconds after being deployed I'd stick the teleporter on it too.
