Ch 490 hell yeah it's the weekend time to read three chapters in one night (The Extreme Confidence of Gotenks!!) don't... don't use that phrasing Gotenks goes on the offensive with a series of named attacks that start out more normal ("Dynamite Kick", "Wild Boar Attack", etc.) but then... degenerate into some quite unusual names. tag yourself i'm hyper plasma shortcake Speaking of which, "Hyper Plasma Shortcake" seems to have been something of a final straw for Boo: he backhands Gotenks and sends hims sprawling. Gotenks is back up on his feet quickly enough, but with tears in his eyes and clutching his cheek where Boo struck him. Poor kid. i have never identified with anything more than this in my entire life After recovering a little, Gotenks gives a little speech about how tough Boo is, but that's to be expected. Boo's response is probably not what Gotenks was hoping for: he says that this is boring, that Gotenks is weak, and that he's going to kill him. Gotenks calls him a "braggart" (sheesh, vocab) and tells him he should have stopped while he was ahead... because now he's made Gotenks angry, and that means it's super saiyan time. And he transforms, which makes Piccolo take his hand off his eyes and perk up a little bit. hyper plasma shortcake!! But, after some contemplation, Gotenks does not choose to reuse the HPSC attack. Instead, although he's worried that Boo might die "too soon", he goes with... Galactic Donut. god sometimes you just look so much like a tiny smiley vegeta (first panel especially) Gotenks tosses the ring of energy he's made so that it's hovering over Boo's head. Once it's in place, Gotenks stretches out his arms, and the ring expands as well. He lowers them, and the ring moves down to surround Boo. Finally, he brings his fists together, and the ring shrinks around Boo's chest. oh hey this looks promising... ... until it doesn't. Boo pops the encircling band by lifting his arms. Gotenks is stunned, but quickly covers it up with a laugh and by saying that they "have the same... sense of humor!" Boo laughs too, and then gets right up in Gotenks' personal space. oh jesus Boo brings his weird hands together in a body-crushing clap that Gotenks manages to avoid with a frantic jump. Boo kicks him and sends him flying upwards clutching his stomach, then flies past and kicks him back in the opposite direction. Make up your mind! Gotenks isn't out of the game yet, however. He gets himself reoriented and kicks off the ground, sending him directly back up at Boo, who is of course flying head-down, ready to continue his beatdown of Gotenks. They meet in the middle. owowowowowowow (but look at those buggy boo eyes) Gotenks seems to be faring worse than Boo after their head-on collision, but he puts on a good face and tells Boo that he had lots more to show, but he's angry so he's gonna end it all quickly. i love your continued faith even through all of the bullshit that's happened so far The bullshit is far from over, however. Gotenks is gonna use his ultimate move.

the ghost attack is the main reason to play him in dbfz because you can spam it and he just keeps shouting SUPER GHOST KAMIKAZE ATTACK in his annoying stupid voice and it's great

Oh yeah, the anime (and I assume the games, although I have never heard him speak in a game; we don't own DBFZ, only, uhhh, can't remember the ones we have) does a kind of interesting thing for Gotenks' voice. They double up the voice actors so he's got a weird two-tone voice. I kind of like it but it can also be pretty fuckin' grating! It's an interesting concept even if it makes no physical sense. It's not like he has two sets of vocal cords!

Ch 491 now that we've all had a good think about vegeta's butt... (The Kamikaze Ghost!/Surefire! Kamikaze Attack) Man, what even. What even am I reading. Gotenks is... innovative, I guess. Why the ghost itself couldn't be produced like any other ki-based attack is just beyond me, though. (That's making a big assumption about the attack properties, though.) Is it just like any other ki blast or whatnot? The ghost seems to have some volition of its own, which maybe other ones don't. So basically I have no idea, just like usual. Maybe it needs something more than just ki to make it work, and that requires the, uh, unconventional method of production. The ghost seems to be into the traditional things associated with ghosts, e.g. scaring people and being spooky. It leers at Boo. the terror has already started. last chapter. and there's no end in sight i wish i had any kind of explanation, but i absolutely do not. none whatsoever Gotenks orders his ghost (....) to go forth and attack Boo. The ghost seems a little lackadaisical about it, but off it goes. Boo prepares to fend it off, expecting to be able to easily send it flying, but the moment his arm makes contact with the ghost... the "kamikaze" part of the attack name becomes clear. bye, ghost! * salutes * And this explosion packs a serious punch. Yuck! Gotenks wastes time crowing about his ultimate attack while Boo lurches around gurgling. NO. NO MORE COOLNESS. MAKE IT QUICK OR EFFECTIVE OR SOMETHING. WE'RE DONE WITH COOL. I'M PUTTING THE KIBOSH ON COOLNESS AS A DETERMINING FACTOR. Sadly, my feelings on the situation don't matter whatsoever, and Gotenks chooses his next moves based entirely on his own perception of how cool it'll be. And, of course, that means more ghosts. (Please gods no.) This is his ultimate-ultimate attack: Super Kamikaze Ten Ghost Final Strike. Pretty, uh, self-explanatory name. He spits out ten ghosts this time. giving them volition was a bad plan, huh. i like the daydreaming one though. also the sleeping one. v cute Quickly though, Gotenks gets them rounded up and in a line. This has its own issues, however: the ghosts can't even touch each other, so there's some griping in the ghost lineup when they get too close to one another. Gotenks wrangles them back to attention and has them count off. hm? oh sweet the new issue of "car" is out? dang i gotta run out and get it real quick So! Boo's completely regenerated and enjoying a nice float and Car magazine... and, worst of all, ignoring Gotenks, who yells at him to pay attention when he's doing stuff. Boo sits up and asks if it's time to fight again. At this point, Gotenks is in a real bad mood, and he sends Ghosts 1 and 2 off to attack Boo, who, now knowing how the ghosts work, simply jumps at the last minute and lets 1 and 2 crash into each other instead, exploding harmlessly beneath his feet. honestly, despite everything, i've spent most of this chapter grinning like a fucking idiot Having made some sort of plan, they break the huddle, and, pumped up, two of the ghosts clasp hands. Whoops. There they go. bright side? at least it didn't start a ghost explosion chain reaction The loss of the two stupid means a slight change of plans. Gotenks sends everyone but 10 out (so, five ghosts in total). Boo's totally prepared for them, but they don't swarm him as he seems to have been expecting.

He moves over to get a glimpse, and of course, with the ghosts huddling so close, has to stick his head right up to them in order to check it out. i love that boo expression, it's so good The ghosts seize their chance: Boo's guard is down, and they throw themselves at him, all at once. NO, piccolo. i know lately you seem to be prone to seeing the best in people but you can't just encourage dumb shit Boo is... extremely unpleasant to look at now. Mostly just a screaming goo creature with very buggy eyes. While I did say this was dumb shit, the ghosts are actually pretty effective when they work out. Gotenks is weirdly appropriate to face Boo, who seems to be kind of... childlike himself, in some ways, although certainly not in others. Now comes Gotenks' plan for Ghost 10, the one he held in reserve. still in hell The final ghost explodes and one black eyeball flies out of the detonation. goddamn sassy child

I wanted to say that this is Goku's fault for not sticking around to raise his kid properly, but to be honest, if Goten had been raised by Goku this probably would be even worse.
Ch 492 speaking of... I wonder what Vegeta would think of what his kid is up to (The Door Closes/The Alternate Dimension is Sealed Off) But unfortunately Vegeta is dead and gone, no longer able to witness the highjinks his son is getting up to. Oh well! At least Goku still has some awareness or the ability to find out what's happening, even if he's dead. Out on Shin's planet, the old kaioushin is still busy with the permanent Gohan STR buff. Shin and Goku are still watching from a bit of a distance. Kibito's not watching, but he's standing nearby, leaning against the tree that the other two are sitting beneath. Goku wonders if anyone but him has noticed that Boo's ki has disappeared? Startled, Shin and Kibito realize that Goku's right; they can't sense it anymore. Could it be...?! Goku doesn't think it means that Boo's been defeated. He can't sense Gotenks either, and knows that they haven't fought. The mystery deepens, until it's abruptly solved by the elder kaioushin. how many are there? does the afterlife count as a separate dimension from the regular world? Based on the elderly kaioushin's explanation, Goku realizes they must be in the HTC, although he doesn't know why that would be. The elder kaioushin has an answer for that too: the Namekian brought him in there. step the fuck off goku or i stg Shin you are vastly preferable to old lecherous man over there and Goku can be a real asshole sometimes (even if you are kind of... useless) Inside the HTC, little gobbets of Boo rain down. Yuck. Gotenks throws a "V for victory" sign before getting yelled at by Piccolo that they have to incinerate all of the nasty little bits scattered around to hopefully prevent him regenerating. i refuse. i won't countenance yet another ultimate move. i simply won't. They finish flash frying all of the gooey bits and Piccolo feels compelled to further inflate Gotenks' ego by telling him that he's impressed by how skilled Gotenks is. (I think on their own, either Goten or Trunks would not be quite so... full of hubris, but the combination is particularly dangerous and prone to being so. Well, Trunks might be kind of that way on his own, but I don't think that it would be to quite the same extent. Goten, I think, is a little more on the Gohan side of things. Probably gets led into trouble by Trunks.) Gotenks doesn't get much time to enjoy the praise, though, because a sudden wind starts up and sucks the smoke from the burned bits upwards, where it gathers into a single mass. I've seen enough Boo to know where this is going. hey, you can show off your ultimate-ultimate-ultimate attack now! aren't you excited? huh? huh? Boo pops back into existence (upside-down), and boy, does he look unhappy. Piccolo's pissed that he didn't think to go a step beyond just burning the globs remaining after the explosion. They should have vaporized the ashes as well. couldn't you try to do that now? like dash outside and then destroy it? probably it wouldn't work at this point, and there doesn't seem to be a way to lock it from the outside (would be bad if there was, someone could just shut you in there and then leave you there forever) Piccolo, desperate, asks Gotenks if he can do the ghosts again, or if he has something else. BAD PLAN BAD PLAN BAAAAAAAD PLAN gotenks you fucking walnut I feel that if this were almost any other time, Piccolo wouldn't fall for such bad acting, but the stress of the situation is making his judgement poor, and he falls for Gotenks' dumb dramatic ploy. Hook, line, and sinker. Which, of course, means that he's now considering going through with the worst-case scenario option. Boo suddenly attacks in the middle of Gotenks' wailing and teeth-gnashing. He extends his head appendage, snakes it around Gotenks' ankle. He then spends some time whipping Gotenks around and smashing him into the ground. After a while, he holds Gotenks up in front of his face, gloatingly. geez <:x hope that tooth grows back. would it be missing from both trunks and goten if they defused? The insult seems to get under Boo's skin and he flings Gotenks away. Gotenks does a bit of fancy acrobatics and lands on his feet. Being whipped around and slammed into the ground hurt, and now he's angry!! And because he's angry, he can carry on with his "oh no I'm out of juice I can't do anything oh hey now you've made me angry and suddenly I've discovered a reserve of power I didn't know I had" narrative. Because that's what makes things tense and exciting. don't you give me musical notes
