Open relationships, quadrants, "poly"... it's all pretty hard.

Because relationships are hard.

Even when they seem like they're really easy, they're hard sometimes.

Whether you have an exclusive relationship, or not...there will always be times when you feel insecure. It doesn't have anything to do with your partner most of the time. Your partner could be the most tolerant, loving and committed person in the multiverse; but you still have brainweasels, either because of your brain chemistry or your trauma or the way that people have treated you. Sometimes all you can do is tell yourself that the brainweasels are wrong, and keep reminding yourself of all the objective reasons that your partner is worthy of trust and has always been good to you.

 

Ultimately?

We are exclusive.

Though, we'd both also admit that we value each other's happiness more than we value exclusivity. It's an odd little balance between the part where I could never deny her anything (and vice versa) and nothing could ever be so tempting to me that I would risk hurting her (and vice versa) and the sure knowledge that even if we both were to want the same person at once, it would still be unfair and unethical because we are so closely bound to each other there's just not room to be fair to anyone else.

But the point of all this is that I've never doubted her, when I was objective about it. I've only ever doubted that I deserve her.

 

I don't really want to date. It's useless.

Don't ask for it. Don't take it if he gives it to you anyway. If he gets really pushy, ask him how many times he thinks Getheny would have slapped him if he tried what he's recommending with her.
