Basic trash demiurge possession recognition protocol: if someone's eyes take on the colour of the triangle that's harassing them--and they aren't that colour normally--it's either possession outright or strong overshadowing. Triangles also turn round pupils, if you have them, into slitty ones like mine, which doesn't help with Talassani because we all have those naturally.

Ford's eyes are blue. They used to turn yellow on a fairly regular basis. It's surprising how many people don't notice things like that, though. Normally, the sapient brain's natural tendency to see what it expects to see would be overridden by the animal brain's ability to sense threats, but demons tend to generate energy that overactivates the logic centres of the sapient brain and dulls the subconscious ability to recognise threats that we inherited from our ancestors, who were either predators themselves or had to evade them.

Smart people are actually more vulnerable to demons, particularly if they're sceptical and materialistic in their thinking. When Ford summoned Bill, he didn't believe in demons; he thought Bill was an alien, and that the people whose writings cautioned against consulting him to get answers were afraid of him because they didn't understand him. Ford didn't believe that any form of magic really existed--he thought it was all just psionics, or science that wasn't yet understood--until he learned that magic believed in him.
