...I suspect we come from very different societies. In mine-- and Rustbucket's, no matter how much he'd like to pretend he doesn't care about propriety-- keeping parts of the deceased's frame is an honor, not just a pragmatic way to reuse every scrap of very limited resources. I don't know what fusion means to you, but I have no regrets about reminding myself of both times I failed in my duties as crewmate and sparkbonded, and all the wonderful things my beloveds did while they still functioned.

For Gems, fusion is merging into one being with another Gem or several, a being that is its own person and yet also still the components that make it up. It is a relationship, a way to connect, and a way to become more than you are. It is not collecting pieces of dead Gems and attaching them to yourself.

Cybertronian-based mechanoids would call that 'combining', though I'm not sure that it counts as a 'relationship'. I believe that the Devisiun situation is similar but not-- split sparks aren't unheard of on Cybertron proper, but they certainly weren't as common.
